the tone can be whatever, it can be cliche, or it could be boring, but as long as I have all the pokemon, i'm satisfied.
and that's why i can't hype myself on a new mystery dungeon because i know with the new 'policy' and the way tpc treats the brand now that that would be an impossibility so i don't even bother hoping anymore lmao

basically. why would tpc let a spin-off supercede the perception of their main games with their stranglehold of the franchise nowadays? it's basically impossible to happen, since they're too interested in chasing normies through phones and they'd have to be aware of how much it would undercut interest in the main games if they were to do it, i would think.

so i can't be even excited at the idea of a new pmd because it will be sterilized to hell and back and shit like that's kind of why. I point to the fact the 'remake' of pmd1 reduces the friend areas to menus instead of keeping the cool locations (and fixing the rest of the busted shit) because it was too intensive to make a whole bunch of 3d maps in a remaking of an old jank game as opposed to actually 'remaking' the old product.

if they can cut corners there, i expect them to cut corners with the pokemon because it's just in character for the companies to do. the kind of, and i hate to use this buzzword really, but, 'soul' and 'effort' that was put into those games just isn't there in regular society these days, let alone these fucks.

it's easier to accept that and faff about with fan content than to accept that anything official is actually gonna meet my expectations lmao

i played smd but i cannot remember anything about it

when i was a kid playing red rescue team, i got FUCKED by a gust trap. i was about two-thirds through western cave, a 99 floor dungeon, and stepped on a gust trap. it blew me diagonally, which can cut corners (picrel). i landed on a water tile, but since i was a golduck i didn't warp and since i wasn't a ghost type i couldn't cut through the gap to get back. so i was trapped and there was fuckall i could do. i'm still salty about that to this day.

i wish explorer's postgame were stronger and that the bit about saving the world a second time were removed. i want fun low-stakes adventures with my partner like the manaphy subplot. maybe add a plotline about the seven treasures.

In RTDX, I basically played support for the AI. I used Moonlight and Helping Hand while letting my Marowak partner handle most of the combat with Bonemerang

Slow trap. I hate anything and everything in these games that lowers speed.

I think I'd just enjoy a PMD game with dialogue options that actually have an impact on the story. Maybe you could enlist in different guilds or go solo as an explorer. Forget exploration work entirely and focus on your human quest, or ditch your responsibilities entirely. Would make replays a little more interesting. At the very least, it might be cool to have a PMD game where you're just a native pokemon.

the game industry - emphasis on "industry" - had some big shifts during the ps4/xbone era. lootboxes and the mobile game were perfected into their current shitty exploitative forms. remember in 2013 when xbox owners yelled at microsoft until they backpedaled on their always online bullshit? or how playstation owners were anywhere from disappointed to pissed that sony would be charging money to play games online? and now with all the subscriptions available and games as a service being the norm it all feels quaint.

back in the '90s a successful game could be made with as few as one developer (shoutout to chris sawyer), but anymore a modern AAA game has dozens at a minimum, so any individual's contribution is diluted. as budgets expand, monetization (especially of things that used to be cheat codes) has to become more intrusive and obvious to make it back, and nobody wants to risk hundreds of millions of dollars on a game that might flop. games were always products to be sold, but it used to be less obvious and less homogeneous.

consider that everybody made fun of horse armor in 2006 for being a paid skin, and twelve years later fortnite made $5 billion by selling horse armor to children.

you're right that an official game will never make you feel the feelings that pmd made you feel when you were a kid, and i don't think it's just because you're older and more jaded. the only thing that has a chance is a fan project with love and care put into it. i'm honestly kinda concerned about how an explorers remake might go: bdsp didn't include any of the changes made in platinum, so it's plausible that an explorers remake wouldn't include new stuff like spinda's cafe, the sky peak subplot, or any of the special episodes.

yeah, i try to disconnect that from a lot of things lately, because it's just becoming more and more obvious in seeing when something's just flat-out bad. I don't go into things wanting to hate them, but if I don't consider what exactly it is that's going on, it's easy to just get lost.

hence, i really only expect fans to pick up the slack in any of that regard.

I agree with the rest of your points but anyone that complains about friend areas being "gone" very clearly has not used them more than a couple of visits per playthrough. as someone who always maintains a rotating team in these games, the friend areas were a complete fucking nightmare in the original RT. having to go to each area manually, seeking the specific mon you want to bring and talking to them (which in itself can be a pain in the ass in specific friend areas, especially if you've already got a lot of pokemon recruited), and doing this every single in-game day can get very tedious after a while. the remake's system is not only much more convenient, they get new remixed music and gorgeous illustrations on top of the soulful sprites coming back to make up for the lack of walking around. they may not be as involved as the original, no, but they're far more convenient without sacrificing too much soul

I think RTDX proves that chunsoft gives more of a fuck about pmd remakes than game freak does about mainline. while RTDX could have had at least some more new content, it didn't really sacrifice much about the original games while also making the updated mechanics and quality of life completely replace the original (unless you're really autistic about sprites, I guess). while a hypothetical explorers remake will probably not have any substantial new content (save for, hopefully, cross-gen evolutions), it will surely still keep everything from sky and make it the definitive version of the game

speak for yourself. Also, that's not mutually exclusive. You could still have the 3D map without the whole 'team setup business,' you could have had it be an option with menus as an aside, and if the issue was gonna be performance, you have 3DS games as a comparison point because Paradise and sun and moon with sprites could handle that shit properly even without loading all the pokemon models.

like, this shit could also be a menu on the side for those who want it to be less immersive. I see no reason why they had to cut the map entirely and it just makes it retarded that a fucking GBA can handle a bunch of locations you can walk around in and a game released a couple generations later can't even muster it because of starved budget and cutting corners.

Nice job being descriptive and using imagery. Fern seems likeable, and the interactions between him and Ciel are nice and cute. They make a good pair. I'm also curious to learn more about Ciel's backstory.

However, I feel like Fern is oddly... nonchalant? His reactions often seem too subdued, and he doesn't worry enough about the situations he's in. That was bugging me during the first part in particular. Logically, he should react with more fear or concern after becoming a Pokemon. But here, after a bit of confusion, he just starts prancing around and basking in the beauty of nature. There are even times when he outright ignores his problems, like when he steps on the warp tile and briefly starts reminiscing about his human life instead of worrying about being alone and lost in a creepy forest. Also, there are times when you *tell* us he's scared, but you don't actually *show* his fear through his behavior and actions.

If making him so chill was intentional, then I think it should be made more obvious, such as by having Ciel comment on how unexpectedly relaxed Fern is, and/or having Fern explain his mindset and why he's so calm.

I also think your writing is somewhat clunky, with comma splices and incomplete sentences, occasional purple prose, and awkward word choices and phrasing like:

>I was nigh blind to even making the next step
These grammar issues could probably be cleared up with more proofreading, or studying about writing, or reading books to see how other authors write.

...This review sounds more negative than I wanted it to, but I hope you find it useful. And don't give up. I still enjoyed reading your stories, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of Ciel and Fern.

I’m glad you like it so far! Your characters are super cute, and I LOVE how you gave Gill a different hairstyle to differentiate him from other H-Growlithe. Pokémon having styled hair is one of my guilty pleasures. :)

Well I did used to know this one guy online who believed he was "soul-bound" to Lucario. Apparently he also got expelled from his school for assaulting one of his classmates with a knife or something. Dude was unhinged. His discord account ended up getting deleted, probably because he was messaging a ton of minors in the server we shared. His furaffinity was also deleted though, so maybe his parents found out about all the schizo shit and took him to therapy.

Every Eeveelution has the ability to learn psychic type moves, which means that all of them have psychic potential. Just don't laze about all day after an adventure and meditate a bit for those magical arms. the game already has random elements, yeah, but i kinda replay explorers a lot (it's my favorite game on the DS, tbdesu) so it's refreshing to have something different between different runs other than my starter/partner combo. it's not for everyone, though, i'll admit. basically what >>55045470 said lol
also, when it's randomized, it makes things more unique and sorta thrown upon you, and you get attached to it as you learn to work with it. kind of the same energy as getting attached to your bros in a nuzlocke, only much more chaotic

It’s one of the hardest things to do when drawing a background, but you did it perfectly. The glow of sunlight behind them also sets a strong contrast against Nick and Amelia. The relevant stories are: The Echo Chamber, Learning to Fly (Ch. 1-3), In the Dead of Night, and The Shine of a Sneasel's Gem.

Also note that this story may, unfortunately, be incompatible with Debby-anon's Christmas story. That story says Christmas exists in the PMD world, but mine says it doesn't. Hopefully that isn't too big of a problem.

One more thing: I want to give many thanks to KFC-anon, who read the draft and gave me very useful feedback and suggestions.

It'd be more manageable if the hack didn't nerf Orans so they only healed like 30hp, you basically have to use Sitris or reviver seeds to get a full heal.

The fight is also in the dark, so you have no idea where each boss is coming from until you replay it

i really liked the way the characters expressed and the only "negative" i can point out is a minor typing error:

I LOVED the romance part, maybe it's because i'm biased for these two but it didn't feel cringe at all and it was really cute. Especially that mistletoe part, it literally made me react the same way Booker did.

It has a option to let you pick one of the game you favored their like Mystyery Dungeon and then make a personal commentary at the end of over review.

All I put at the end was that we want a new pokemon mystery dungeon game with a newer generation that has a wider character selection from the personality quiz instead of the same starter generation of fire/grass/water with pika and riolu. Just make the options have more variety like they did in Rescue/DX/Explorers and not be restricted like Gates/Super.

On the bright side, the STAB damage bonus is pretty powerful and you can still hit Ghosts with Normal attacks, it's just weaker than NVE hits.

That isn't really an issue since you don't run into ghost types that much until later and even then Shinx learns bite/crunch so that handles ghost types.
Skitty is just very OP because of early access to Tail whip & double slap link and attract. But really post game it will just be tail whip and double slap link linked, Blizzard for monster houses & one range move that travels over squares like shadow ball or ice beam. Plus her IQ skills are nuts. Skitty is basically the best mon to play with in Mystery Dungeon or as a partner.

Damn the Bidoof special epsiode kind of kicked my ass. I fainted like three times. Once was due to hail because I thought I could tough it out(I could not). And the other two were during the part where Bidoof had no partner and those special attack fuckers just murdered me out of no where. It was certainty a difficulty spike.
I was worried this game was going to be too easy based on the first two dungeons, but I was mistaken.

The special episodes certainly have their moments, but for the most part I'd say explorers isn't too hard. Some of the post game dungeons can get pretty rough, though.
