For me it's 3 because I'm biased towards many of the routes (113, 111, 119, etc), the region's design motif of humans coexisting with the natural world, and the way secret bases actually had a feeling of being varied and out in the wilderness, it really felt like you had a little hidden home to fix up and run away to. Gen 4's bases were more like indoor apartment rental units in comparison, one size fits all down brown hallways, no romance.

Comfiest? Gen 2, hands down.
Most Soulful? That can be debated back and forth all day. I'd probably give it to Gen 4, with 5 coming in close second, but a case can be made from 1, 2, 3, or 7 easily.

If I had to guess, it had to be the internal battery shit. This was a problem for all the GB and GBA games, but happened the quickest in Gold and Silver, and was the most damning too by preventing you from saving.
I think RSE sorta fixed this by having you still be able to save, but it froze the in game clock. If it had a day/night cycle, you could permanently be locked out of some pokemon.

Gen 4 easily, both DPP and HGSS.
RSE are my favourite but by design they aren't really "comfy" moreso adventurous. IMO comfiness comes from the ability to just kind of immerse yourself in the atmosphere and world of the games, which the gen 4 games easily do the best for me. Day/night cycle and time based features in general help a lot with this.

Generation would be 6 for me, the graphics are just the right blend of 3D and cartoony, the environments are top-notch and well animated, and the music across XY and ORAS is wonderful and relaxing.

Region would be a different story, and I'd say Johto, I love the Japanese culture and HGSS really looked pretty for a DS game. I still remember the tingles I got when I first saw the game swap to night time on gold version, it was peak comfy

You still get locked out of Espeon or Umbreon depending on when the clock stopped, not to mention berries. They should have done without the clock altogether like they did in FRLG.

I put Unova up there because of all the bumfuck nowhere locales like Anville, Lacunosa and Lentimas, lots of entire places out of the way that have no relevance to the Pokemon League or anything major in lore.
However, I put Unova on the top solely because of Village Bridge. Fuck, I love that place, a true 'mood' of a place. I'd pay good money to see it as part of one of the animated series or some prototype artwork to see tens of houses up there like a proper main road town.

They made no such attempt, they explicitly kept the graphics simple. Even the GBC has games that are much more graphically impressive than gen 2, Pokémon games have had simpler, less ambitious, graphics since their inception. That doesn’t make them bad, it just means that’s not the area in which they try and go above and beyond.
