She could stay in the country of her birth and try to save them. She could marry a wealthy old man and give up her American citizenship. She could give up what little she had, and be forgotten. Or she could join her relatives in a country with no shortage of food.
By the time she made her choice, though, it was too late.
The country she chose was called Haiti. It was a black nation, and she knew from what she'd heard that it was a dangerous place. But she was just nineteen, and she'd never been anywhere, and her father had already made the decision for her.
The country was in the middle of a revolution. Her father had tried to keep Watame's family safe, and eventually he had paid with his life. Watame knew her family was dead.
