I have different levels of dorkiness the more comfortable I am around people and the better I know them, so if it's someone at work who's older and more casual, I'll just throw the old British stereotype of saying what day of the week it is and my boy do they just lead the conversation. When you run into other people with similar interests it's fun to sperg together though. I know what you mean though, even if I'm not familiar with the USA so much, I'm learning that your late twenties are basically liking the same things you probably liked at thirteen but without embarassment and now we make money and get to indulge a bit.
