But as an audience, I feel like a nice trick is to let something besides the brattiness shine through occasionally. Let the reader get used to the character just sassing at people and joking around for a while, and then have them suddenly do something actually cool/smart/depressing/shocking/somber/impressive. Helps the character feel multi-layered, instead of one-note. That's if they have a lot of screen-time, if they don't, it's fine to let them fill a simpler niche.
As for intimacy... That's up to what you're comfortable with, but trying to write outside your comfort zone can be instructive. As with lots of other types of scenes, I think focusing on the character's senses is particularly important.
