The story behind this song:
The artist Kabata Saki was an up and coming Jpop star who had got her start through a television talent show. However as her career was picking up her close friend Shimizu Kazuhiko, who was a huge inspiration for her music, died tragically in a car accident. She went on to take 6 month hiatus from making music, or really having any kind of public presence at all. But there was one exception. Lonely Rolling Star for Katamari Damacy released in March of 2004.
I'm sure plenty of people have already paraphrased the meaning of the song, but in a brief summary the singer is singing about her lover (or perhaps acquaintance) who is often/always away for one reason or another. Perhaps it's due to unforeseen circumstances, or maybe it's just a part of who they are. The song is about the singer resigning to wait for them because she knows that eventually they'll wander back to her.
Will her lover ever return we may never know. But she'll still be waiting, and perhaps one day they'll find her or vice versa. At it's core the song is about accepting loss and moving on while coming to accept and learn from your past experiences. I'm sure many of you have gone through periods of loss in your life that have overwhelmed you with emotion, too powerful to put into words. Kabata's heart and soul has been poured into every word. A outcry of pure emotion. Of sadness, of grief, but also of hope and optimism. This is Lonely Rolling Star. And out there somewhere, Kabata's friend is almost certainly still rolling through the sky... searching.
