the gambler's a lot simpler. Basically it's about the dangers of gambling, since the author himself was addicted to gambling at some point in his life.
Crime and punishment is basically what people describe in this thread but of course more complicated. The thesis of the book seems to be that people seem to be unable to kill their fellow man regardless of the circumstances.
