It took the more limited space of the psp, and pushed the gameplay to the maximum of what it could do.
It made scoutrushing obsolete as overwatch fire was that withering, and also gave you good counters to overwatch fire. (VC4 forgot this lesson and you can scoutrush in 4 with an apc still)
The long campaign was great- and having some choice on mission order was great. Being able to do side missions that affected or removed enemy capabilities in main missions was great.
Being able to respec soldiers into different classes encouraged players to experiment more with different types they didn't typically used. Made the game feel like XCOM a bit.
If you can still find an iso that's prepatched with the fan english translation, I'd heavily recommend it.
