The majority of average people do it this way. They try to roll the attacks but they fail because of timing. When they fix the timing they get hit by the long combos. When they fix the long combos they get hit by the other knight. Eventually the learning mechanism in the brain says, "okay, we've concluded it's completely impossible to fight close range, you had far more than enough experience to learn this."
So once the brain gets to that stage, how are you going to improve? You won't put effort into doing something you already believe is impossible. You need to unlearn that first, and that's only possible by hitting the brick wall with your current strat, which hasn't really happened yet. Because it is workable, just not optimal.
