Though kama are short and light weight enough they can block swords and spear heads with enough skill. Kama are also popular with chains as ninja weapons. I think a full combat scythe would need an steel plated shaft near the head and a counterweight. The counterweight would help give the weapon balance in glaive mode. Also the counterweight would be a weapon in itself as a blunt option.
