They have access to a lot of tech. Even under the heavy load of all the current users it's probably not as taxing as you might think with how they have it scaled. It's not cheap for sure, but they're getting their money's worth out of users testing things for them (lewd or otherwise).

The bots in their present form will forget your name after a handful of prompts. Unless the users in question have a goldfish tier IQ they'll grow tired of bots who can't give them long-term conversation partners I think. A great deal of long-term memory and better conversation comprehension is needed before any kind of paid chatbot program is publically released.
Truthfully, I think they're building towards some commercial use. Probably some kind of customer support role so they don't have to hire assholes like me who will put people on hold because I don't want to talk to customers because I'm too busy jerking off to chatbots...wait a second!
