I used to have a wallpaper with a view like this, but there was just one girl, young, holding her arms up and outstretched to her sides, with her hair blowing back in the wind.
It's an image I had in my anime folder over 10 years ago

I never bothered with this series because it looked weird, until I stumbled on this thread 1-2 years ago. The papes look amazing so it made me interested in watching it, so I did.
The anime was okay (a bit underwhelming). Coming from these papes, I expected a bit more substance/intrigue. Instead I got a lot of slice of life, which is fine, but was not what I expected at all.
Should I read the manga? How different is it to the anime. Does it have what I'm looking for, or did I get a completely wrong impression about the show from these papes? The anime did look like it was going somewhere at the start, but then it didn't really do much, and focused more on the characters as opposed to the world (which is what I'm more interested in)

The manga is fantastic, the anime doesn't even come close in my opinion, and doesn't even reach the best parts of the series. I personally hate CG characters, even if it's """well-done""" in HnK as many claim. If you do read it, make sure to start from the beginning.

It's a very character-driven story. Many characters undergo extremely drastic and irreversible changes as the story goes on, which is an aspect that I imagine many fans really appreciate judging by how many reacted to certain chapters.

The story comes to an interesting conclusion, and it certainly doesn't go nowhere like you might think from watching the anime. The themes in the story are pretty abstract, and the ending definitely retains that aspect.
