They're ex-humans who were summoned from the grave to live forever, doing whatever a massive alien sphere tells them to. What's more, this sphere doesn't give a shit about anyone; it just floats around the universe, using races until it doesn't want to anymore. Then it abandons them to be genocided. Oh joy. Our saviour.
Real humans are completely impotent cowards who never leave the city (aside from about 3 exceptions, total). And even guardians are completely impotent cowards who know nothing, understand nothing, and do nothing but kill whomever the big alien orb decides is an enemy. Why was there never a repopulation of the Earth? Why doesn't humanity try to work together with the Fallen, who basically just seem to want to do something to the traveler as revenge for being abandoned and genocided by it? Why are the guardians the rulers of HUMAN society, when they aren't even human anymore, and are inherently corrupted by their dependence upon the traveler? And why is everything so goddamn hidebound in orthodox dogma? It's all so pathetic
All in all the player, and humanity itself, are just a minor player on an evil side (not as evil as "the darkness", but definitely not good like humanity itself is/would be).
It's like playing a game set in World War 2: an interesting setting with real drama and a lot of intrigue. But they force you to play the whole war as collaborationist Military Police in Nazi occupied Norway.
Yeah... fun...
