I have come to the conclusion that the civilized Western culture has lost its survival instincts. Life in general has become too easy. For example: hunger isn't a threat to life, it's merely a slight discomfort (when was the last time someone said or thought "I'm hungry" or "I'm starving" and was actually in any remote danger of death from malnutrition). People who are thought to be at "rock bottom" are still quite well off when it comes to their chances of surviving another day.
