>Wada House Living Room - Shirakawa-goShirakawa-go is a mountain village of fewer than 2000 people in the Gifu area. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site because of the well-preserved houses in the unique Gassho-zukuri architectural style. While it was beautiful and warm (about 15C) when I was there, it is one of the snowiest places in Japan.
You can visit the Wada House, close to the bus terminal. The living room has tatami mats, a shoji panel, and a painted design on the wall. You can go upstairs and see how the roof is constructed and bound to the house. The steep angle of the roof means that snow doesn't pile up.
Seems like this is more of an exhibit than a hotel
