Based and redcoat-pilled. Was just contemplating a viewing of Zulu, coincidentally. Only got this handful of tribal figures from some safari set, and nothing that quite stands in for turn of the century British infantry.

More tribal-pilled in my case. I've always found any sort of natives from American Indians to African tribal warriors to Australian Aborigines to have a cool aesthetic, plus there's looking at them from the angle of being freedom fighters. Some of the old Jungle Jim and Tarzan sets have some pretty cool Maasai and Samburu warriors, plus the spearmen from caveman sets make for good barbarians if you're doing a Roman thing. Great plastics for getting your ooga-booga on.

Most of my collection is 20th-21st century warfare, with some near-future, American Civil War and Wild West, Medieval and pirates, guess I haven't gone out of my way to find more niche stuff. It's why I love these threads, is a chance to see a lot of the cool stuff out there I'll probably never have myself, heh.

I already have the best army anyway.

Seeing people make fortifications out of random household objects is so soulful. It reminds of the early days of YouTube when people just make vehicles out of cardboard, or use DVDS/books/VHS tapes as terrain.

The other end of economy of scale: if they're only putting these together on demand it's going to be pricy. Think you could probably buy most of the individual components or near equivalents for less if you shop around, but yeah.

That would probably be the cheapest thing to do. Stock up with installations of two or three bags at a time and find cheap crafting materials to make your fort.

These guys come from the TSSD series of western-themed stuff. They also have gunfighters, cowboys, and even Mexican banditos. The title for this set is Plains Indian Warriors and there's also a mounted set. Both are around 20 bucks.

Nice trips and the Taliban figures are pretty cool. I've thought in the past of getting some Armies in Plastic figures, either stuff for Rorke's Drift or some Boxer rebels to use with the model junk I'm working on for Asian pirates.

Based and durka-durka-pilled. The Pashtuns, Mahdists, and Tuaregs from Armies in Plastic are also pretty cool if you want various Muslim warriors. Another good company is Zvezda out of Russia. They make Ottoman Janissaries at 1:72 rather than 1:32, but they're still pretty cool and come in a variety of poses armed with various weapons.

Gunpowder sacks. They can be glued on as saddlebags or placed inside this little cart that isn't pictured. The set even came with three muscular drummers and their large kettle drum. It's quite the cossack host.

They look almost exactly like those guys albeit only 28mm or an inch or so tall. They're through this company out of Russia called Zvezda and usually run about 12 to 20 dollars a box depending on demand.

I'm always fearful of modern games. So much AAA stuff is infested with DRM, mircrotrans, and bloat. If some Indie studio got the license, or just started making their own plastic soldier IP, I'd feel a lot more confident. I would kill for a raytraced Sarges Heroes 1 or 2.

So I've noticed that the most recent Tim Mee M16 solider reissues seem to be made of a much softer, more flexible plastic than the earliest reissues. Magazines and bipods on my early reissues (probably 2015 to 2018ish) seem to break off relatively easily/frequently, but with the newest reissues (2020 or 2021ish), pressing on the magazine of a machine gun only causes it to bend momentarily and then return to shape. There seems to be less detail in the softer plastic, but the increased durability seems worth it. The earliest reissues I'm talking about are blue, grey, black, and red. The more recent one's I've bought are green and tan. Is this softer plastic used in all new reissue colors, or is it only for the green and tans?

And this one was my favorite for today. I initially also had a tank in the scene, but I felt it distracted too much from the main focus, and I removed it. While I was adding more rocks to the background, one of them fell and knocked the tank into fast, swollen river below, and the tank and I rushed about 30 feet or more downstream while I tried to catch it. Also almost lost the guy hanging on the cannon a number of times. The whole thing was rather perilous for plastic soldiers and equipment.
I really like how strongly the blue plastic stands out from the natural world. Really seems to grab the eye.

Variety in soldiers has been happening, particularly in the bucket sets. Dollar store fare still tends to recycle the classic soldiers but there's been some new stuff coming through there too. Vehicles still lag behind some, though again those bucket sets have been putting out new ones.

I imagine most toy companies have shied away from matching vehicles to army men scale to save costs/space in the packaging. There have been exceptions over the years, like this truck I found at a mom and pop dollar store many years ago (sorry for the fuzzy pic, was an early potato digital cam). 1/35 is a challenging scale for vehicles cuz of size considerations; looking at the bin where I'm storing my 7-8 trucks of that design and imagining it can probably fit twice as many of the smaller, more commonplace truck also in the pic.

Like any hobby there are tiers, with the differences being quality, brand and availability. The basic and broadest army men tier is your standard dollar store fare, generally made with the cheapest materials, generic branding and heavily cloned/copied/modified poses. Above that you start to get into the some of the widely recognized brands like Timmee, Hing Fat/Billy V, BMC and Armies in Plastic - quality is better in materials and detailing and the poses are less generic, with a corresponding increase in price. The next tier would be custom/limited run sets like that Rorke's Drift, made up of various components that aren't widely produced and commanding a high price point as a result At the very top you're getting into vintage toy soldiers, the tin, lead and wooden army men of old.

There is one other tier, sandwiched between the dollar store base and the branded stuff that I'd say is my personal favorite: the all-in-one bucket set. Very similar to the premium Rorke's Drift set in that it offers everything you need to have a little war; soldiers, vehicles, equipment, buildings, scenery, even vegetation/terrain. The main difference is these are mass-produced and usually with well-known armies and gear, keeping costs down. Pic related is a set currently on Walmart shelves: for 15 bucks you get two armies (green and tan), each with a platoon of soldiers, a tank, plenty of accessories and even a couple paratrooper figs.

How does the licesning or copyright around army men work? I mainly wonder how adventure force is allowed to sell exact copies of Timmee's patton tank. When I say exact, I mean its literally the exact same deisgn, but the molding is clearly less crisp, leading me to conclude that it was made by copying the timmee model. Also I don't like the rought sandy feeling finish on the adventure force army men that come in a jar.

Chinese companies aren't likely to care anyway, takes a brand with real clout like Lego to force them to care. The other thing is the Timmee tank is a replica of a real-world vehicle whose design belongs to the US military and was manufactured by Chrysler. One would have to ask Timmee directly but I can't imagine they had to go ask these entities for permission to make toys of their tanks. If you look closely enough many of these copies aren't even exact copies of Timmee's design: pic related are two non-Timmee Pattons, with visible differences at the base of the gun. They'll often have differing kinds of wheels underneath and other minor differences in detail. If Timmee had a case it'd be in the manufacturing process, but those patents have likely long expired since these have been around for quite some time.

If the history of Lego's failed lawsuits against MegaBloks and others is anything to go by, this would also be a case of patent law instead of copyright/trademark, in which case any patents would be long expired. The Timmee Patton isn't a character that can be trademarked or copyrighted. It isn't a unique enough design (like the Lego minifig or CocaCola bottle) to qualify for trademark, being that it's a real-world fighting machine. We as army men enthusiasts may recognize that Timmee originated the design, but the public by and large will just see a toy tank.

Last one. Average price I can find seems to be about 30 bucks, which is $2 a figure per set. They're really cool, I would have loved to have accurate equipment and varying colors as a kid, so it would be nice to get to use them playing with my nephew and get him into the same toys I had.

Keep an eye out for them on Ebay. Sometimes there are good deals. You might not get the entire set, but you can start piecing stuff together, and occasionally, cool/oddball stuff gets thrown in with lots. It will take some patience, though, as many Ebay sellers are delusional in their pricing. Many people these days don't price to sell.

actually it might be even worse than that. considering the fleet and the men on the coast are green, that means they are on the same side (being army men and all) so this may be some sort of friendly fire situation.
maybe that officer decided to show off to the ladies by firing off the coast with weapons that would be too far to do any harm. this could also explain why the men are not well positioned.

I find painting anything that small to be way too tedious but do like the idea of childishly playing with them as little figures. Just pretending that I'm playing out a little movie or something. Although commissioning someone else to do the painting or buying them pre-painted might work. Especially the conquistadors and cossacks I also suggested.

I was home at my parent's place and these guys were pretty much all I could find of my old dudes. They were in a shortbread tin under a dresser. I thought my other guys would be there as well.. but these seem to be the last survivors somehow.

This is an interesting study in some of the do's and don'ts of battlefield tactics.
Do's:

Which somewhat mitigates the green army blunder of

>green artillery battery spacing is poor, inviting heavy loss from even desultory counter-battery fire
>said battery appears to be facing the wrong direction to support the ongoing attack
Though this last one might be to engage possible enemy reinforcements, there's probably a lot more going on in the bigger picture.

I used to have this set.
I can't find it anywhere though.
Mine actually came with a balloon- busting set.
There was a vacuum-formed base that had some terrain and a downed balloon. I think it may have had a biplane model as well.
I owned it around 45-50 years ago so it's a bit hazy.
I re- purchased a pack of their astronauts last week (out of production as well) but have a shoulder injury so no pics.

Damn I also have this set, also I hate to be on the negative spectrum but I hate that they're getting cheap, not in a good way, like those other knock off timmee stuff were pretty good, like I would like mind some knock off where they altered some poses (like the rifle guy standing instead of kneeling) instead of becoming too cheap to be good. But this one is just a disgrace, like the figures were starving or something, but I guess the tanks and other accessories make up for it.

Want to single out this rather unusual Chieftain tank - the barrel is a separate piece that can be elevated and depressed, rare for army men tanks; it has this odd double machine gun turret on the back; it's fairly heavy, seems to have a mechanisim inside that doesn't appear functional but I'd guess was originally a pull-back-and-let-go play feature. The "Tiger" isn't new to me but I don't think I had one in that color.

This Luftwaffe Field Division set has a couple, which was probably an intentional decision because they were forces trained for various aircrew duties that were rerolled into ground infantry with little training.

I probably should have posted here instead of making a thread.
These were packed with some cheap Chinese made WW2 army men and I'm wondering if they were originally from some space themed set that were thrown in as pack filler. Like originally they were in some space soldiers vs aliens toy set and the chinks held onto the molds. They're about 25 mm 1/72 scale.

Usually the knock-offs are on the small side but I've got some that were scaled up to standard army men, because they totally fit in with WW2 and Desert Storm general infantry.

Fair enough, the distinction is an exercise in semantics for most people, that is if they're even aware of such things as APCs and IFVs and aren't just calling all armored vehicles with treads "tanks". The average joe will see a Bradley and call it a tank, since it has the classic characteristics of one (armored hull, turret with gun, treads). Indeed, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (my jam) refers to both the Bradley and its Russian counterpart as light tanks in dialogue.

Yeah, this is specifically where I got it from. The game is still active on PS3 (will be shutdown later this year) and I prefer the movement over three’s.

Recently picked it up again on Xbox, had to start from scratch as my EA profile had been deleted for inactivity... been a blast but also frustrating as the community has shrunk and a lot of what's left are scrubs spamming the auto shotguns.

Speaking of Bradleys I feel like that MicroMachines playset has left a lasting impression on army toys. At least one army men company produced cheap knock-offs of it, faithfully recreating all the opening hatches and ramps and the various turrets; that one cheap action figure line from TRU whose name escapes me (Soldier Force I think?) has produced pic related, an up-sized and much-simplified version that could be argued is just another Bradley toy but for one detail - it has a similar three-barrelled gun on one side of the rear of the turret.

Feels like another dry spell for in-store army men. Dollarama's had nothing since pic related some months ago; Dollar Tree also devoid of plastic troops; TRU scaled back its generic military toys and hasn't had anything for at least a year; only Walmart still stocking these >>10414052

Doubt that any of my soldiers are originals, but at the very least a good number of them are high quality copies/clones. Here's a link concerning the set in 1/76 scale:

Couldn't say if these came first and were later upscaled to the 1/32 dudes we know and love but it's quite likely. Matchbox armies have had a lasting influence on army men, pic related is but one example of poses with clear lineage back to those iconic soldiers.

Was surprised to learn Matchbox also originated the classic Afrika Korps army men, using poses from their AK and German Infantry sets; the 1/32 sets often have a couple poses taken from Airfix's German Infantry as well.

On a related note some of my first ever army men were copies of Airfix British 8th Army and German Infantry, though the latter have an MP40 soldier pose that must come from somewhere else as it doesn't match the Airfix original.

The medium blue figures in pic are some of those army men from 30+ years ago, the darker blue and olive green ones have come from various secondhand buys over time. Note the MP40 pose and how it correctly depicts the submachine gun, whereas the Airfix version added an anomalous forward grip akin to early Thompsons (as seen in the Airfix British 8th Army set). Still looking for where he came from, doesn't fit any of the other Airfix German sets or the Matchbox ones.

Update: I went to Walmart and they had them in stock this time. A little smaller than what I already have, but it’s not that much an issue. Interestingly, I think the accessories tell a story; it looks like the Greens are on the offensive and using air superiority for something like Shock and Awe, meanwhile Tan is on the defensive.

In fact I recognize those soldiers, they're the ones in these sets >>10512146 and pic related, very interesting. That C-2 Greyhound is a really unusual and obscure aircraft choice, paired with the likes of an F-18, F-22, Harrier, Dassault Rafale(?) and one other jet I can't see well enough to identify.

I dunno, the quality of the soldiers in this newest set seems lower, would need to find some myself for a better comparison. The Dollarama sets had slight but noticeable lower quality than the bucket, though the overall contents were the same; the new set has accessories from the previous Walmart bucket and seemingly new aircraft - all quite interesting. I enjoy tracing lineages of army men stuff, theorizing what was inspired, what was cloned/copied, what was modified. Will be on the lookout at Walmart for this new set, really keen on the aircraft more than anything.

Played with my armymen today; it was very therapeutic. I don’t know why, but I always view tans to be the aggressors and winning at first. The battle was simple: tans tried to attack a loose unit of greens, got BTFO and led them back to their base, greens ended up taking and capturing the officer. Then the tans launched a few counter-attacks slowly grinding down the greens.

Anyone else have experience with the Engineer Basevich stuff? Just heard of them a few days ago and figured I share some pictures of cool stuff they make. They seem to focus on WW2 and WW1 soviet stuff, as well as ancient and medieval figures.

It was originally a MicroMachines playset that some army men manufacturer copied and packaged with a few soldiers. Never did find that specific company; first time I saw them was in-person at a mom-and-pop dollar store that hasn't existed for years, while the other time was from an online store specializing in army men that also hasn't existed for years. Other than the MM playset one popping up randomly on ebay (was how I got this one >>10499107) the odds of seeing the KO version are pretty slim.

I was just looking for army men because I want fodder for learning to paint figures. Glad to find this thread. Btw, you guys probably already know this but I was shocked when I figured out no physical stores in my area carry these anymore, even the dollar stores
