Why can't transformers toys just release a single line of toys and why doesn't one company handle it? Why is there not a single company in charge offering good customer service? I'm pretty sure I bought an identical axe from one of those chinks that 3-D prints overpriced accessories for Transformers on ebay. Like over a year ago. Did the chinks steal the design from somewhere official first, or did threezero steal it from the chinks? This is not the first time I've seen this happen.

Interesting choices! The Henkei/Classics is not really a fun toy to pose or play with, but it looked good then and still does now. The Titans Return one kind of has long arm syndrome, but I really liked it for a while.

My own choices are probably the Studio Series and Animated. Animated Roddy was a freakin great toy.

I like his whole look. He's wide and stocky up top, with thin little legs on the bottom. He has the classic himbo physique. He is way more articulated than usual for the time, including stuff like ball + hinge wrists, ball ankles, hinge and ball elbows, etc. You can even cheat him into some extreme poses by using his mid-shin transformation joint to "break" his leg.

His car mode is sleek as hell, with no visible signs of robot. Big beautiful windscreen. Fun to roll around. I think he was one of the highlights of the Animated line for me, and that's saying a lot since I hold the majority of the line in high regard.

Oh, and I forgot: simple and intuitive transformation. There are a few little interesting bits, but it's pretty easy to figure out and fun to do. That's my favorite kind of transformer, the type that's chill to just re-figure out every time you get it out.

It is how you know he is a boy compared to Skywarp and Nova Storm. But hey, this has to be one that isn't just a repaint of Cyberverse Starscream since this didn't exist then. Although the robot mode is an incredibly poor likeness in colors.

I'm a slut for most of the LG Headmaster/Targetmasters, but particularly Hot Rod just because I feel like the gimmick suits him. I feel like he'd love becoming a little guy just to facilitate hanging out with Daniel or whoever. Hot Rod already has such a "designed by executives" vibe that I love the idea of just jamming every gimmick into him.

I would love to see a hypothetical headmaster/targetmaster/powermaster/triple-changing/pretender Hot Rod.

Hell yes. Cloud 2.0/Universe 3.0 would be awesome.
Not that it would ever happen as the mold is probably long gone but I always liked the idea of a Megatron out of Energon Bulkhead. I like Megs as a helicopter (Animated was cool and also gunships are about as close to a flying tank as you're gonna get) and I can see this mold working well in silver, black and red.

I'd gladly take those four (5 if you wanna do the under-3 one) as new characters, they can be a handful of Predacons/Maximals who woke up on their own and had their own little Beast Wars on the other side of the world or something.

Proportions look better on the old one. Anon was right about the shapes getting worse, look how that bold angular chestplate got turned into this dull rounded rectangle. The chest is even narrower, making him feel less heroic. It's also just more visually interesting somehow.

Yeah they’re pretty cool if you like the designs. Soundwave is probably the worst of the bunch with awkward proportions and no cassette/partner function. I’m personally not a fan of Starscream’s black painted sections of battle damage(?). Bee and Prime are pretty solid

That said, this one's gonna be particularly rough. I mean maybe if you did more realistic crab pincers, you could rotate the claws to become two-toed feet... and MAYBE you could have the crab legs arranged SIMILARLY to the tentacles, but then there won't be any octo in his octopunch. plus a big ol head like that, where would it hide? Hm, overall he's definitely got less of the broad look of the original; he's notably slimmer and lithe-er, it seems. I'll wait for video reviews to judge the head, but on the whole, yeah, I dunno - he seems nice to me. Starscream also has similar proportional alterations, but everybody seems to love him and how he turned out, so I dunno.
If you've already got the original and are happy with him I totally get not being enthused though, but fwiw I never had him, so I'll prolly pick this guy up. He seems cool to me.

these kind of remind me
on one hand, an elbow has no reason to be anything but a hinge (or even better, two hinges), but ball joints have the advantage of swiveling, and you can block unwanted movement by using a partial cowling on the socket.. but then ball joints can also loosen over time.
Maybe if a hinge piece was attached via a swiveling socket, that would be the best compromise.

Modulators, fossilizers, weaponizers and junkions do pretty much the same, those parts could be added to the main figure anyway, just like how they slapped beast legs into CW Silverbolt to make Turtler.

Animated was the tightest shit. That they captured such a stylized show so well without compromising much in terms of design was nothing short of miraculous. In this era of endless reboots and continuations I can only hope Animated gets another season... ideally after a change in leadership at Hasbro.

Though, on the other hand, it already stars a brown girl. Maybe it doesn't need much tweaking to make it Current Year compatible.

but I would still modify this pretty heavily
for one thing, have a leg swing out which connects with the hind fin, letting it form more the shin rather than a ridiculous huge flat foot...
and maybe even do something similar for the arms, the front flippers could be connected to the forearms.. or they could be shoulder accessories. of course then you don't have much robot meat left, but the shell could maybe contribute that. what if the whole sides of the shell became the arms.

TF fandom is fucked up. With how prevalent the anime were and how easy it is to find fansubs for all of them on literally youtube, you'd think they would be more common-knowledge. If this were any other fandom, everyone would know about the anime; hell, even the comics would be more well-known.
It seems like TF fans are totally content to just watch the movies/Animated/TFPrime when they were kids, and then LITERALLY nothing else. Maybe some funny Sunbow compilations and the Bumblebee Movie at best, it's kinda fucked up that MTMTE (objectively the most well-known TF comic) is still something most people generally consider "obscure".

The problem is that among those that have seen them, the Japanese G1/Beast Wars stuff isn't terribly well-regarded. Most of the positivity just revolves around a handful of designs like Deathsaurus or the novelty of Big Convoy or whatever. The UT (and to a lesser extent RID/Car Robots) has a bigger footprint for obvious reasons but it's appreciated in similar terms.

I think the original Marvel comics are fairly well-known. IDW was always a fucking mess, though.

Eh, maybe in the 90s/early-2000s, when TF fans were shocked and appalled that the shows they never watched were apparently nothing like the headcanons they built up in their heads and online cliques - but not so much today. When people do watch these shows, it feels like they praise stuff like SGMF, Victory, BWII, and Car Robots to the high heavens because they're actually taking them for what they are (beats me why they praise BWII instead of Neo, which's IMO way better in every conceivable way, but I digress).
I'd even argue that the UT is barely recognized, honestly; maybe someone will vaguely recognize Armada or Cybertron as "the thing that existed right before they were kids and saw the 1st movie", but that's it. I blame TF fans sticking so closely to the terrible dubs for the shows' poor staying power, but that's kinda another topic entirely.
As for the comics, I feel like if you told the average TF fan "hey, the franchise had an entire well-regarded comic that was published by Marvel" then their heads would explode. At most it's like they're vaguely aware IDW/Dreamwave existed, but don't know a single thing about them.

The animes got railroaded into being considered crappy by boomers running the fandom in the 2000's. There was a lot of mystique around them in the 90's when the only way to get them was VHS copies and, if you were lucky, early P2P pirating, but even then subs and translations were hard to come by. When it got easier in the 2000's, The American side of the fandom that were able to see them kept telling people they were not good and were not worth checking out. Meanwhile these same old fans kept hyping up the G1 Marvel comic as the best thing ever.
20 years later the G1 Marvel comic barely gets attention from new fans because, surprise, most people's attention to this franchise starts with aesthetics and the G1 comic is boring at best and ugly at worst visually for most of it, along with dated writing. The animes, especially the BW ones, had to get proper fansubs outside the TF community because a select few fans convinced everyone it wasn't worth checking them out as anything but a curio. had the fandom done a better job of preserving them, we'd probably see more people aware of them.

Omega Prime is only a HasLab because of Ultra Magnus. Optimus on his own would be a Commander class, so bundling Magnus with him for retail would be a total no-go. And Magnus would never sell on his own (he'd basically a commander in his own right), meaning Hasbro would likely never greenlight producing him, so the only way we'd reasonably get the full combined Omega Prime is if it got the special HasLab consideration.

I'm in my early 20s and read the Marvel comic for the first time last year, I think you're bein a bit harsh personally. US's definitely got bad art at the start but really gets nice later (esp when Jose Delbo becomes a regular), and I think the polished-but-still-old-comic look of the book by then has its own charm; plus UK looked good from basically the start.
Writingwise I get where you're coming from, US definitely suffered from many of the human stories and Bob getting overwhelmed by the cast additions, but at the same time he had a lotta ambition I think; dude murdered the entire cast and had the main villain toy usurped by some literal who, leaving the main protag as some literal who pacifist medic, as early as Issue #5, and now Ratchet n Shockwave are considered popular fan-favorites. It certainly wasn't thanks to their nonexistent roles in Sunbow, I'll tell you that. His Cybertron story with Blaster was great, and many of his human stories did stick the landing imo, like with Skids, and the pulpy silliness of some issues also have their charm. It's just harder to appreciate them when they're surrounded by many otherwise-bleh stories.
I think most people today would appreciate UK most, it's got the most modern-style writing and Furman juggled cast additions way better, but it also has some dumb filler in the early years, and the publishing order frequently got outta sync.
I feel a condensed reading order of US+UK would do a great deal in getting new fans to appreciate it, but it seems that doesn't really exist online besides fans saying "just read everything in order lol". I wanna make one myself, where do u guys think I should post such a thing?

Would people buy him even then, though? They didn't buy him when RiD/Car Robots was relevant, why would they buy him at 50 bucks nowadays? And sure, Magnus is mostly hollow, but he also has to transform into armor for Prime, which includes a second set of hands, a second head, etc.

I think there's something to this. Unboxing and playing with ML Convoy gave me a feeling I haven't had since the TR/LG days, where every figure felt kinda like its own little self-contained playset. The budget may have been at rock bottom during Prime Wars, but TR at least put out some super fun figures.

Nobody has. Like most of the "-izers" they're gimmicky shit that gets forgotten quickly. The problem is that, compared to the rest of the mainline releases, the Izers at least feel like something new and different. Some people just take a while to realize that a turd on a plate might be "different" than what you've eaten for dinner every night for the last three years, but that doesn't make it good.

Also the Decepticons really suck in terms of variety. Didn't even use Razorclaw, Claw Jaw, or Rampage. The Autobots are using pretty much every 2000s marine mold that doesn't have extenuating circumstances (Omega Supreme's only half battleship, Deepdive is gang-molded with 2 others only one of which is on-theme and being a seaplane is still questionable if it is on theme, Shortround is redundant with Sea Spray, Undertow might have not existed when this was drawn).

Complete body fossils are rare, if the body was torn apart the mineral concentartion van vary from part to part changing their colors and shades. Even complete bodie fossils have different shades so I don't get why you insist on having only 1 color on the toys.

Bought SSGE Sideswipe during the weekend. The joints are ALSO floppy but still far better than the old FOC's, can't even be bothered to transform that thing. A nitpick only I would make is that he doesn't have 5mm ports in vehicle mode so I guess this sword/gun is going back to UM.

Yes and no.The actual sides of the head and eyes of the beast mode are on the legs. That's the cool thing, he has a mechanical manta head in beast mode and an organic one as decoration in his robot mode chest that was under the mechanical one.

Finally got around to reading Dreamwave G1, I'm a bit mixed overall but I'd say I enjoyed it a lot in the end.
v1 and v2 start off edgy and a bit basic writing-wise, which has its own of-the-time charm in fairness, but yeah the War Within minis are viewed as the highlight pretty rightfully I'd say. Much more consistent art (Wildman's art on Dark Ages is prolly my favorite of his work ever now, the coloring really complimented him there), and had... actual, narrative themes, but was also still pulpy and with the occasional humor. That said, I feel the mainline comic was finally getting good right when it ended; v3 (when it became an ongoing) started to be more like War Within tonally, and Figuroa becoming the main artist of course gave the art a huge boost.
Makes me wanna reread early IDW again, seeing as it had a lot more directly in common with Dreamwave than I first realized, lol.

But yeah anyways Sunstorm fucking rules. Hope they do a new G1 Seeker mold sooner than later, I really wanna see him on one. (Was also prolly my favorite role for Jetfire, dude was a fucking badass; makes me glad I preordered his Siege reissue last month lol).
Here's hoping that The Fallen next year is solid, too, he was actually wicked in the comic. I got the SS RotF one recently on sale, but basically only because I wanted him as a silly jobber for Prime lmao.

I don't really know or care about this character, beyond Hashtag being a really lame name, but I kinda like how this looks. Pickup trucks are cool, and semi-rare altmodes it feels like. Not sure about the powerlinx port directly on top of the roof though. I guess if you got two you could have like, A double-truck, or a truck-centaur a la Energon Towline

You know, I don't even have nostalgia for G1 but missing link is the most interesting thing Transformers have done in a long time. And they actually have good alt modes! Bluestreak's name comes from the fact that he's talkative and "Talking up a bluestreak" used to be a common phrase. Jazz was named because the Jazz revival in the 70's and 80's harkened to a cool and hip music style- now Jazz is thought of old boomer music. Hot Rod was a type of cool retro car associated with greaser types, which were fresh in pop culture thanks to 50's nostalgia in the 70's-now they're cars from nearly 80 years ago.

Getting the front wheels to fold up into the correct position adds to the complexity of the mod. The first pic is with them siting how they would be with only the upper torso swivel hinge modded and pic related is with the abdomen properly cut to let them tab in.

I certainly think it looks significantly better. Shame nothing can really be done about the awful foot shape as of right now without just strait making new ones.

With the stock torso I'd say the opposite I think. Most of my problem with him is the really uncanny lower legs. It's like they put animated style legs on a animated styled design.

As for the mod, the swivel hinge on his back is doubled up. I cut it under the top swivel, drilled a hole through the halves and glued a piece of polystyrene so that it can slide up and down. From there I set a nail in as a stopper and cut out the sides of the upper abdominal area. You can't see the mod in robot, and you have to be really looking for it in vehicle.

that's not gonna work with the rest of my zoids! plus they already did that once, with the 'blox' versions of regular guys. having a miniature version of a larger zoid is neat but the novelty wears off. and even those were still in the same 1/72 scale.

but as for BW buzz saw, first of all I had no idea he was a basic. secondly, while it is neat to see a wasp with a waist for once, the waist being an obvious metal coilspring ruins it entirely for me. but I do like the transformation. antennae staying on the robot head? neat. wings to legs? super unique. bug legs moving to different asymmetrical places? I can get down with that reluctantly (i'm curious where the other legs go though, I only see four in robot mode)
But the silly claw-arm and leg-arm are just.. what? come on.

The website says they're 1/10 movable plastic model kits. Not fully confirmed but chances are Metamor verse kits are based on Kotobukiya's Sousai Shoujo Teien model kit line like picrel.

That's what I'm saying anon, the Masterpiece toy takes a lot of elements from the original toy. But it also takes elements from the anime version, the design is neither slavishly accurate to the anime nor slavishly accurate to the toy. In a way I guess it's designed like the older Masterpiece toys, the ones that weren't designed to be Sunbow accurate.

Bullshit. Not the anon you were talking to, but I own some of the Macross Valkyrie sets and it's totally possible to build a functional vehicle from the parts (that even turns into their Gerwalk modes; the only one you can't do completely is the Batteroid mode, because the human character is intended to represent that when fully armored up). They're not the only kits, either - I've had several in the past that had a similar gimmick; hell, even a few of the old Busou Shinki figures from decades ago could have their armor turn into stuff (Graffias, Vespilio, Arnval MKII, Strarf MKII, etc.) when they weren't wearing it. I see no reason why it couldn't be done here - other than laziness.

It had these red stubs that extend somewhat out of the shoulders. The Masterpiece toy gives you the option of attaching either the shoulder guns that is accurate to the toy (and later parts of the Masterforce anime) or the red stub shoulders that's accurate to the anime.

That is true, but IIRC both FAG and MD are 1/1 scale (since they're not scaled off anything obviously) yet here it states that they're 1/10 which is Sousai's scale. I think that's particualrly a problem with transformers because we don't always have clean silhouettes to work with, and it can be difficult to get a good idea of how the figure actually occupies 3D space, but on many bots, that can be mitigated with good posing.

Despite the fact that ML Bee is so small and chunky and his arms are sort of a wheeled clusterfuck, >>10982893 does a great job of using the pose to suggest a line of action and to clearly show the humanoid framework among all the car parts.

It's only half the equation, really. The primary reason any company will always charge more for less over time is because, ever since the stock market became a thing, the implicit purpose of every business is to have infinite growth for their shareholders, which is both impossible and retarded.

We're hitting a point where all the individual strands that factor into bottom line profit are finally being stretched to their limit. The only recourse is that the stranglehold on the consumer simply moves higher up the neck; you price a number of potential consumers out, while hoping that a smaller number of wealthier buyers will make up for it. This is why so much of Hasbro's output lately is ABSURDLY overpriced, and why they're banking more heavily than ever on nostalgia, and grooming their fanbase to expect to pay x-class prices for a y-class toy, and so forth.

Of course, the tragic part of this is that it's true for all companies including ones that make essential products and not just toys. The process is still the same, though; they'll just keep charging more until they collapse and go bankrupt. Then everyone who purposefully steered the ship into an iceberg will peace out on a golden lifeboat and let everyone else deal with the consequences of their actions. Privatize gains; socialize losses. It's the late-stage capitalist playbook.

tl;dr: greed ruins everything and there's nothing you can personally do to stop it, so buy whatever you want if you think it's worth it. We'll all be dead someday.

In the original cartoon, they could convert any other form of energy into energon, right? even simple heat. so the most logical thing would be to go station themselves near a star. but failing that, burning fuel, splitting atoms, or hooking turbines up to things that are moving already.

This guy has been in the box for a while now and I finally decided to open him up. Man, he is so good. Only thing I hate, is that you can’t flip the wings over his shoulders. They so could have added a mushroom peg to the wings. It would’ve been kinda ugly though but would fix the biggest strike on this figure.

To me, it’s the grey plastics that make it easiest to tell
It always looks like it’s mixed poorly or something hasn’t bonded correctly, could even be a contaminant that they use for cleaning
I have a feeling a lot of these toys are going to be brittle long before the older one

they can't actually tell visually, they're making huge assumptions because of how plastics used to look versus today.
Because plastic VISUAL quality used to be a much higher priority than plastic breakage
modern tf plastics are softer, so they have less of a shine to them, and don't look as good in photos, but it's part of what allows the parts count to get so high because they don't break as much.

I remember TFAnimated, it's the toy series that my nephews all played with because they were the right age when it aired.

They were really poorly build and broke easily, so we all stopped buying them.

TFPrime toys got even worse.
TFRiD2015 made their toys much more simple to deal with that problem, cyberverse changed the plastics (and were met with some of the worst yellowing ever) and who knows about earthspark.

Meanwhile, generations prioritized function over form, studio series prioritized form over function, and you'll see a plastic difference between those two lines, but more SS have breaking problems than generations

Hm. I was not a big fan of the original Animated Prime, and initially though the new one looked good, but now I can see I was fooled. The old one is so much better.
