Recently decided to take my Hobbit Bag End off the top shelf and dust/rebuild/upgrade it, and JESUS FUCK is it dusty. I guess it makes sense since it’s over seven years old (and probably hasn’t been touched in at least five when I modified the back table to hold all the dwarves).

Should I expand the back side of the model to really get the full table in there, or leave it with the same footprint?

i've been sorting by color and then sorting each color into different rows like 1x1 1x2 1x3 etc and its like from plate pieces to like bricks to ramp and slope pieces etc etc

Sorting by piece and by color at the same time is normally only something you would do if you had a monstrous number of pieces, like 100,000 or more. The general wisdom is to sort by piece type first, and if that still leaves you with a very large number of the same piece then sort it further by color. The reason you don't sort by both unless necessary is because you'll end up needing far more storage space than is necessary.

Depends on collection size and storage capabilities/size, as well as how specialized/‘pointed’ your collection is. I’ve found that generally, sorting is needed for any and all pieces smaller than a standard 2x2 brick, as well as plates. If I have a ton of a certain piece, I’ll generally further divide them into color groups. Also don’t be afraid to group multiple disparate parts together if they’re thematically/mechanically linked. Stuff like various hinges and clips, or textured bricks and arches, for example.

Generally whatever is easiest for you to access is best. I personally recommend drawer racks with removable drawers (like Akro Mils) as they’re easy to pull out and rearrange as needed.

Conversely, I generally would not recommend stackable interlocking Sterlite drawers unless you have a lot of space, as they’re a pain to move around and take a lot more time/space to find the piece you need. Additionally, larger cabinets with unremovable drawers are a hassle unless you have a dedicated desk location, as again they’re a pain to move.

last year i had around 6-7 full tubs of lego, that number has gone down to like three ish because i've sorted a lot of main colors into bags, but i've still got a lot of shit that hasn't been sorted yet... backpain is a bitch
i wanna rebuild a lot of sets from my childhood that have been taken apart, so i've started sorting by color then by piece but i keep finding more and more of each color the more i sort through these tubs. me and my dad got to work on this to at least organize most of the pieces
there's a lot more to be done and i left some spaces in between colors to add more pieces but yea

Sorting by part makes finding a specific part much easier, as you’ll know the shape and can see the color you need quickly. The inverse is having a big sea of red or yellow, and constantly digging through for a specific shape that might not even be there.

Although again generally every brick larger than 2x2 and every plate bigger than 4x4 to 2x8 can be grouped together in broad categories, since your amount of said pieces will be lower and larger size dictates bigger storage containers to hold them.

After several iterations of spinners, a couple of years ago they introduced a horizontal wheel with a built up handle so they can spin around and you can steer. They're still using this, they're in the ninja vs baddie $10 sets from this wave
I've had mixed results on hard surfaces, the wheel can sometimes just slide instead of having enough grip to spin properly so you have to figure out the right angle to press into it and also maintain the center of gravity in the right spot. But they're a good concept

I guess it also depends on how much of a certain part type/color you have. If, for example, you have enough 1x2 bricks in red to fill an entire drawer/tray, then it’s fine to have one entirely dedicated fo them. It’s important to have removable trays/drawers so that you can easily reorganize when you see fit.

I personally don’t really have much of a system for my drawers other than having similar stuff next to each other, but as long as I can intuit it, it’s good. The same should be true for you and your system.

This is kinda my situation, I have whole trays of like 1x2 or 2x6 in certain colors where it doesn’t make sense to me to really separate, I’ve just got an order to my drawers that I try to follow
1x bricks, 2x bricks, 1x tiles, 2x tiles, plates of 4 stud wide, ramp pieces randomly from 1 stud to whatever, misc slope pieces, cylinders and circles, misc depending on what color I’m dealing with , then end with transparent pieces

Most of my Lego is from 2007-2010 because it used to be heavily clearanced for like 40 percent and over at target, my mom would buy a bunch of big sets for really cheap back then. It’s kinda hard to find these huge lego deals now or maybe I’m just not looking hard enough

I got the ship in a bottle for $30 (30%) off last weekend but that's the only really good online deal I've gotten in probably forever.

In retail stores, underselling sets usually go on clearance after Christmas to clear out any unsold stock, but the stuff you'd want usually doesn't make it that far. I did get a bunch of Hidden Side sets after Christmas that way. There's not many other times throughout the year that LEGO will get a heavy discount unless there's just some kind of retailer-specific sale that applies to all their merchandise

Ninjago lasted this long because it built an obsessive fanbase of teenagers who just got into the internet culture. "Zoomer's First Shipping/Fanfiction Starter Kit", basically.

The cartoon had them hooked, and from there they just kept demanding more. The series was supposed to end after 2, then got 'Rebooted' (that's the third season's actual name) out of fan demand and from there it just kept going and going.

In the beginning it kind of was that. This was the only set I bought back then- oh, and that skeleton helicopter polybag- since money was tight, but it was a lot simpler back then. LEGO City Adventures looks a lot better, style and animation-wise. Monkie Kid is a big step in the right direction, it's drawn animation but with visible LEGO elements. Flying Bark can work on all LEGO cartoons in my opinion.

It doesn't matter what it's supposed to mean, it doesn't work from colour theoretical point of view. You can't just put blue and sand green side by side and expect it to look good - you either need to keep a close hue (like sand blue) or an opposing hue (like sand yellow).

Just put some good old greenery (like 2423) on top of the tiles for the moss and grass growing there.

I only just got into it, and was really disappointed by the lack of supporting media. It's a real shame, because the sets are really well thought out and have a great aesthetic. I just got the high school and I love it.

According to one of Jang's livestreams (where he looks at the 2020 hidden side sets), a Lego employee said it wasn't selling because parents were turned off by the idea that the sets interacted with an app. The sentiment seemed to be that they wanted a toy to get their kids OFF their phones. I get that, and I doubt the packaging helped.

Still though, it has to be my favourite theme since Space Police 3. Kino ideas, eldritch undertones, and gimmick (the hidden ghosts and possessed buildings, not the rainbow wheel).

Which Lego set or sets in the entire history of the company do you consider to stand out as far as offering the greatest amount of potential playability? Remember that size and amount of "interactive features" doesnt always necessarily correlate directly with actual playability.

I know this is strange but Ive actually been selling off my modern legos from anything past appx. 2007 era on ebay and facebook and have been buying vintage lego instead. It gets memed alot here but there really is this charming essence of "soul" with the lower part count and improvised piece usage to approximate a model, not to mention the cuter minifigs with simpler printing. Im at the point where I'd rather sell my UCS Slave 1 but keep the 2006 version despite the clear downgrade in accuracy and durability. I just got a huge lot of 90s Spaceport (pic related) and found a big classic Pirates lot on facebook for a good deal so Ill probably grab that aswell using funds from selling off my newer collection. Perhaps the turbo tank will be next along with some castle. Sorry for the rant

I think pic related is a perfect example. I own both of these models and when compared to the source material it is obvious which one wins. Durability would also go to the newer model, aswell as size at 3 times the parts count, and it has more interactive play features. By any metric for comparison the newer model is the better toy and display piece, however im not selling the one on the right, Im selling the newer one. I feel that once you have achieved such a high level of detail and accuracy, it barely resembles a lego kit, not at a distance anyways. I may aswell get the hasbro shuttle (great toy) if I just want a scale model of the ship that can also be played with. I really cant explain why the older model is more charming to me short of the usual buzzwords "soul" or "simplicity" and I recognize that it is objectively worse, but thats just how I see it

The charm of LEGO is elegant parts usage- but it's only elegant with a limited pallette. There is no elegance in a bloated selection of single-use parts

That shuttle happens to be fine, but I hate the new X-Wing canopy element, for example. I loved from '99-2010 they basically had one canopy element for all Starfighters, and it was perfect. You could use it outside of starshit, you could use it outside of spaceships in general.

Now the X-Wing uses a specialty printed mold that is ONLY an X wing canopy, NOTHING ELSE.

It is my opinion that LEGO has gone from approximating a model with existing pieces to 1:1 replicating a model with new pieces. This very well might be the result of retarded licence managers that have big control over the sets, and want "that to look more movie-accurate"

The old canopy piece is the same width as every other 4xX window element. Incredible SNOT etc possibilities. The front angles are a mirror of 2x3 angled plates and fit perfectly between them.

Vintage has its place, but sometimes it’s okay to admit newer sets and newer pieces are better.

Although I’m of the opinion that some of the newer general pieces (like 2019+) are cheating to get very specific shaping/pieces while other, older pieces still exist that can do the job just as well. Then again, I’m an old man who thinks Mixels are newfangled.

Nexo Knights and Monkie Kid had some amazing designs though. (Fortrex, Axl's Arsenal, Knighton Castle, Mei's Dragon Bike, Demon Bull King, Pigsy's Foodtruck, Mei's jet, the ship). The 1x2 plates w/ brackets, smooth slopes, and small ball joints that made the Mixels possible still feel like new innovations to me.

Meanwhile some of the newer parts are downright fucking cheating, in my eyes. Stuff like the 1x1 plate with bracket, the 1x3 jumper plate, the 1x1 plate with male clip, the 2 length rod with tow ball, and the 1x1 round plate with rod instead of stud.

All of those are bullshit and make building cool stuff too easy for people nowadays. :^)

There's an increasing amount of questionable connections and design decisions in recent sets, most which don't actually work IRL and put parts under unintended stress but aren't considered errors in programs like Lego Digital Designer and stud.io.

I'm pretty sure the vidiyo app uses 3D models of the figs, which are able to deform like that, so technically it's not false advertising if you view it as advertising the minifig's usage in the app (since it's framed by a smartphone)

Actually I think it might have a chance with kids. They're not smart enough to see the flaws, parents won't be dissuaded either with the starter sets being cheaper than LEGO Mario or the average Hidden Side set.

Parents who are AFOLs can help their kids build backdrops and stages, and for the rest it's a nice collection of unique/uncommon minifigs.

In the app, to scan and unlock a vidiyo minifig, you have to tell it which minifig you're scanning first
It gives you a picture of exactly what you have to scan right before initiating the scan
Taking a screenshot of this, displaying it on a screen, and then scanning that picture, is enough to trick it and unlock the minifig

It does seem to actually scan the minifig, I couldn't use the same screenshot to unlock a different minifig
But the printed tiles it shows in the preview are identical to the other fig so those must not matter beyond being an arbitrary alignment tool plus a secondary unlock

It doesn't snow often where I live, and it has been ages since I built a snow vehicle. The build was a bit of a rush job to beat the snow melting, but I'm pretty pleased with the result.
