I love 8-wide speed champions and I think people who dislike Lego City vehicles becoming larger are fucking stupid and tasteless. The amount of detail you can pack in expands with each stud. 6-wide is superior to 4 for generic city vehicles and 8-wide is better than 6 for show cars. I'm glad their vehicle design ascended beyond the early 2000's trash. I just got Dom's Charger and it looks so fucking good compared to the previous charger, it inspired me to disassemble my 6-wide speed champions and mod them wider. I've built my streets to accommodate these behemoths because they deserve it.

I agree, when i get new minifigure i need to get or at least devise a place for it, so i can build it in a future. Its just irks me when mini doesnt have its own place, it can be house, base, vehicle, ship, tent, whatever, but ppl that just collect minis on mass are weird, your minis are homeless and unhappy. Maybe its a hamburgers mentality, americans seem to have a problem with homeless people thats swept under the rug.

Yeah, I was mostly joking since I'm planning to give them a hovel or a cave or something. Might use the Forestmen 90th anniversary set as a jumping off point for a camp or I got the Newbury Subway set for a tenner the other day which I could use to start a lil cave scene. I'll probably do a 1x2 or 2x2 baseplate scene eventually with goblins raiding the Ideas blacksmith.

These mint baseplates are such a good choice. Great colours in that theme. I also really like that cobblestone ramp piece used in multiple roofs here, and that crazy form baseplate for the restaurant. Really comfy arrangement

Cool, I included my hideout to forest creatures encampent and plan to add 1 more large tent or something similar, some more trees and foliage so it really looks like a forest. Ill have fprest area, village (lions castle, smithy, tavern, 2 farm buildings and mages place on outskirts) and bog area with a place for my witch/necromancer and her minions.

I'm okay with lego updating their scale conventions provided they still fit within ones they previously created. As long as the City cars fit on City streets it's perfectly fine. Speed Champs can be any size, but 8-wide is a good detail-price ratio or else they're just mini creator cars. I also don't mind 4-stud cars for playsets because kids don't care if they're tiny on roadplates now, only we do. The line would be if Lego released cars in one theme convention - like city - that can't be used in Lego cities. I don't think that's happened yet unless soneone has an example.

Nowadays, sets always have .99 at the end, and they always round up to a multiple of 5 (so, like $19.99, $14.99, etc.)
But these ones are all over the place: $54.00, $33.00, $11.00, $6.75, etc.
I wonder when Lego started changing and standardizing their prices

Yeah I don't know the specifics but it does seem that early in my childhood it was a little more haphazard, like they built the sets first and then priced them. Whereas later on it seemed pretty standard like you must roughly have a 5 dollar set, 10 dollar set, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50, 100. With a few store exclusives breaking this maybe. And in the mid 2000s I recall very few sets going over the 100 mark. Though I was a broke kid and some other anon probably knows better.

Also anyone else feel like the blacksmith is way too big compared to, well, pretty much any other castle set? I love the set but I'm considering trying to downsize it to fit better.

And finally since there are lots of Castle anons here how do you guys display your factions? Are all eras welcome side by side or no? The classic faction era was before my time but I have some KK2, fantasy and Kingdoms sets. The current "wave" is back to the classic factions however. Any crackpot silly headcanons on whether and to what degree all the different lion and dragon factions are related?

They started going towards bankruptcy in 2003/2004 at which Star Wars was already part of Lego for half a decade.
They got out of bankruptcy with a bunch of different methods none of which involve what themes they were making.
Bonklefags try to claim the same thing but Bionicle launched in 2000/2001

I think all eras work functionally side by side, variety is king as opposed to separating all series lines from one another.

I bet they used to build it then price it, but now they decide a budget and then make the set to fit it, which lets them make the prices more standardized

I just checked one of my old 2004 catalogs, and there were only 2 sets over $100, while a catalog from this year has 7
But 2 catalogs is a small sample size, admittedly

Thx mate, dad wizard is hydromage for now, gave him all blue stuff and staff, maybe im gonna switch him up but felt that majisto the great deserved some archmage robes. Ill think about some changes after ill build some tower/small collage for them. Also i scored some sweet innkeeper togheter with dad wizard, im gonna post interior of the inn after ill finish it. Smithy is a little on a big side, but im not concerned, its a shop, a working area and his home afterall, just dont stick it very close to castle if it irks you (also you could just do some castle evevation).

It wasn't so bad at first. You had, what? Star Wars and Harry Potter? And the Studios theme, which I quite liked, was a neat way to get a bit of Spider-Man and Jurassic Park in there. I think the full-fledged Batman theme was the beginning of the end. It seemed like the licensed stuff just snowballed after that. Still, I think Lego's greatest sin was allowing Ideas to be such an autistic license mill.

Licensed themes aside, I also think something has to be said for Ninjago just dominating the last decade and strangling the life out of everything else original. Ninjas and anime are evergreen I guess while this generation has little interest in cowboys, pirates and castles.

Going out on a limb, I'd say the black knight is the main thrust of the reference, the treasure madness is retroactive, and the treasure being amber is incidental. Though amber was highly prized in medieval Europe IIRC.

Probably this one terrain build I made as a kid. I used maybe 5 baseplates and made a jungle, desert, and snow zone, with some structures in them. The jungle had lots of foliage, a waterfall with a secret base, a river, and some ruins. The desert also had ruins, and the snow area was mostly just terrain without anything interesting.
It was pretty ugly and haphazard, but it was fun to play with.

The only time I've encountered that is the newest car transporter. It's designed to hold 6-wide cars (which are actually 6 and change because of the tires), so the trailer is 8-wide. It doesn't fit on the new road plates, which are two 8-stud lanes, because the wheels will be on the white lines in the middle of the road, and butted right up against whatever you're using as a curb. If you just buy a shitload of dark grey tiles you can simply build wider roads which is what I do, and why I like the new roads, but a child isn't gonna be ordering parts like that.

They could make new sets with a different scale
The most popular model scale trains are HO and N but Lego trains are larger to (barely) accommodate for minifigs
But the bricks themselves don't really lend themselves to making detailed trains at HO scale.
So yeah it's just one of those things. Either too expensive or too autistic for kids, but not targeted at most adult model train guys either
The sweet spot would be AFOLs who are also train autists but that's a small group in reality.

The based thing about Lego is that you can do this which is why I don't mind them including more female heads by default. Especially since the lady knights and forestmen have been using the same torso prints as the males. Even the new queen's torso doesn't have curves so you can swap her too.

There were some decent dress pieces in the BAM within the last year or so if you need more lady clothes.

Depends on your budget and the type of city you want to make. If you like the classic road plates, or you already have some, and don't mind spending a bit extra ordering them off Bricklink, they're still one of the best options.

However! If you don't have any classic plates, and you're just starting, I recommend the new road plates. They can be easily modified for wider roads, and work well with MILS, which any self-respecting city builder knows is key to the construction of any current year LEGO city.

Looks like your current stuff is on normal plates rather than base plates right? New roads m8. And if you want base plates, get the stackable strictly bricks ones since they're actually plate height.

You miss out on curves but you gain customisability in other aspects. Can do alleyways too.

That's fair, though I still have my doubts. I think there's something about ninja weeb shit that tickles kids' autism in a way that cowboys or pirates or Johnny Thunder would have a real hard time of. But I could be wrong. Anyway, with how garish Ninjago is I don't imagine a Castle or Pirate theme after a similar fashion would appeal much to many of us. Didn't Knight's Kingdom 2 have a fairly involved story and characters? I don't guess kids were much into that either since it wasn't around long but I know most of the AFOLs detested it.

Monkie Kid is a pretty lame theme but some of the builds are sweet. The city of lanterns set had a modular feature where you could rearrange each shop or lay them out on a table. Looks like that anon just air-dropped the noodle shop into their build, which isn't a bad fate for it at all.

The town center with the pizza/dojo and car wash has a crappy little 4-wide smart car constructed almost exactly the same as this one, but it also has an electric car charger to imply that it's a little cuckmobile and not a real vehicle. And the set includes a 6-wide truck. That cuckmobile could also be the case here with the "green" messaging.

Yeah $60 is way too much. 3 walls, no roof, and even the miscellany others complained about would be either a non-issue or potentially encouraged if the set was $30. Form-factor-wise it's a playset so those things are actually not a problem, it's only in the light of the $60 price where that becomes the case.

Yes they did. Star Wars and BIONICLE didn't just buy them time, their success made TLG realize that kids liked stories to go with their toys. That's why they stopped making :) Minifgures and started making characters instead. I have no opinions on the monkie kid theme desu. I got city of lanterns because i already have Ninjago City gardens but can't use that in my city until I get some beach stuff ready.

Monkie kid sets are pretty nice tho they're usually more advanced builds than the ninjago sets. I just wish they did more with it than just making everything a vehicle. I like the new Cloud temple set but I can't justify spending the money on it desu.

I hate it when producers base some or all of their product on existing stories. Alice in Wonderland, Greek Mythology, and Journey to the West are some of the most overused ones. I'd much rather that they try something new and miss the mark than copy something in the most boring way possible.

In the case of Monkie Kid, they did it because they thought it was the safest way to reach the Chinese market. And the execution isn't doing it any favors for me either. It's like they took NINJAGO and slapped China on top of it.

Price rise hasn't hit my region yet so I've blown like £300 on sets that are on sale at the moment. Got the big JW:D one for my kid for Christmas for £40 less than it'll cost in December.
Once the price rise hits, I'll probably just stick to buying reduced stuff at Smyths.

Maybe there's just a lot of kids (but definitely a lot of adults) out there are sorely lacking in imagination, but I never had any trouble coming up with my own stories as a kid. Considering it's ultimately adults buying the sets anyway, even when it is for the kids, that I think it's really the brand recognition that matters the most.

I basically refuse to sell sets on bricklink if they are not 100% complete other than a few caveats.

Sometimes stuff like rubber bands or string are very hard / prohibitively expensive to replace. Relatively exclusive old vintage parts can also be a huge burden, but even then I still try to replace them so I can sell the set as complete, which you can charge a premium then.

This lil bastard in yellow is $20 because it was only in two blacktron sets. Another classic example is the blue palm tree top which was from a huge pirate ship (also $20).

If you're going to sell a set incomplete, it had better be for a pretty decent discount or good reason - more than what the missing parts are worth. Make it feel like a good deal at least. Maybe list it on ebay instead.

Depends on which set and what parts are missing. There's a lot of variation in price for most mid-level sets so you might find yourself wasting money completing a set that floats in a state of 10-20 dollar variability, but on the other hand some sets benefit massively from being complete or including a valuable part. Most importanlty though, always keep in mind the largwst depreciation was opening the box, so at the end of the day nickel-and-diming complete vs. incomplete means nothing in the face of boxed vs. unboxed. Short answer don't bother long answer it depends.

I do agree that most parents are more likely to buy licensed sets due to brand recognition, but I don't think that's always the case. I'm sure some parents watch the toy commercials with their kids, or they hear about them from them second-hand. They could sit down and play with them, ask if that ninja Minifigure is named Joe, and then be corrected with "Mom, that's Lloyd!" Then when they're shopping for LEGO sets, they see "Lloyd" on the box and buy it. Maybe they happen to see their Friends from the tea parties, too. It's not just that kids follow the stories, it also allows parents to connect the dots because they typically don't follow what they're invested in. It kills 2 birds with 1 stone.

I also think this claim pertains more to the "modern LEGO is hurting kids' imagination" rather than brands not mattering to them; it's BECAUSE the licensed sets already have predetermined stories that they're not coming up with their own.

However, I still feel the need to elaborate on it. I tried watching the NINJAGO toy commercial years ago. It started out okay, but it quickly became too retarded for me. When they not only revealed that the green ninja was Lloyd, but also aged him up with an asspull power-up, that's when I had to stop watching it. There was so much asspulling, jobbing, and, worst of all, retconning that I couldn't be bothered to care about it anymore. Looking back at the wiki, it seems that I made the right decision with how much shit has happened since then. It's like they're phoning in it as they go along because they just want to... sell toys.

Because of this, I didn't want to watch another comedy with action cartoon, I want to watch something with a real story to it. And Monkie Kid didn't appear to be that either. In fact, the only clip of it that I've seen that had any sort of seriousness to it was one where Monkey King says "You should've stayed buried" to one of the villains. Everything else I've seen from it has been le wacky xD overanimated garbage. Your GIF is a perfect example of it: all of that build-up just for him to be immediately swatted into the Yamcha death pose. Sean Schemmel and anime references aren't enough to change my mind about it.

I was actually pretty staggered when I found out that damn near every sodding minifigure in the City sets is an established character. The crooks having names on the boxes made sense, since they're kinda like powerless super villains, but finding out that the guy I made this from isn't just a cool, random mechanic minifig but instead he's actually some character called Tread, and the Stuntz bike girl I bought is actually the Lego City fire chief it seemed really fucking weird.

With the 90th anniversary set releases there's been a lot of talk about Classic Space both on LG and on the internet.
What I've noticed is a lot of the discussion focuses on ships, vehicles and usually comes down to people being nostalgic about them and also debating which CS ship was the "best".
With a line that was mostly vehicles, I can see how that is the case, but I feel it's a pity that bases, something CS had quite a number of, are completely left out of the spotlight.

So with that long intro, I bring you 920, a set released in 1979, a simpler time, consisting of only 186 pieces. I'm going to be honest here, it is a simple set, but it has a certain amount of charm to it.
It has a few play features (hose interconectivity, rocket launch feature, small rover) and a decent number of figures. I don't think it holds up to modern "standards" for sets in terms of "wow factor" but
there is a something to be said about the way it delivers itself to you. No backstory, no antagonism, no overarching plot. Just three spacemen and their base. It leaves everything else to you, the builder
and in that regard I feel it retains a unique quality. Is the rover supplying a rocket launch? Or is it simply refueling here to transport fuel somewhere else. Are the white spacemen allies with the red one? Are they competitors?
There's a certain magic lost with modern sets, where your ability to drive the narrative of play is significantly reduced because these things are simply delivered to you, with the set.

Lastly, in the microcosm of Classic Space, I feel bases are somewhat underappreciated. While ships/vehicles are always cool, since they're more "dynamic" there is perhaps something to permanent settlements, the places the vehicles
ultimately come from and go towards. Bases are, ultimately, the endgoal of space exploration, so the next time you want to build something CS themed, maybe try to make a base for your explorers.

I do agree. Even as a kid I was more interested in bases and setpieces than vehicles, which were welcome but ultimately overwhelmingly common. And when you get a setpiece nowadays it's a six stud deep facade or something else with no fucking stud space to place minifigures.

6971 Inter Galactic Command Base! 1984

To do a proper base you need a lot of parts
a lots of these sets looked small and unfinished
The designers had to work on tight part limit
Picrel is only decent sized one IMO , it had largest number of parts but even it feels way to open and unfinished. (window panels missing etc)

Stuntz is fun for kids unless they play with them outside because the flywheels on the bikes are VERY delicate and will stop working if they get any sand in them.

Walmart currently has a deal where you can get the Rocket Racer minifig and his bike, along with two other Stuntz racers and a carrying case, for $15. This is a decent price because the three figs and their bikes are $8 each if you buy their little boxes separately.

There's nothing present in current LEGO sets that's preventing you from creating your own stories like this. They're the same plastic bricks with the same limitless potential that they had when you were a kid. You are just making up problems with new LEGO sets and then complaining about them.

The actual problem is that kids aren't thinking outside of the box. When the story and characters are delivered to them, they can't help but associate them with the real deal, and that playing any other way is the "wrong" way. They see Batman and that's it; it's Batman, so it can't be anyone or anything besides that. And this isn't exclusive to licensed sets either, it's everything that has a story and characters in it. TLG doesn't care about it because they're only interested in the bottom line. It's not their job to raise your kids for you.

It's not that it's not there anymore because one is delivered to them, it's that they're not shown to play with them in a different way.

In it, they found that boys played with the "outside" of a set whereas girls played with the "inside" of a set. Okay I figured it out. I checked out the stuntz bikes more and they're actually fukkin sick. The combo deal is appealing because you're warning they're finnicky so it increases the survivability. The major thing is that I also want him to have a decent chunk of bricks to futz with. The burger truck is fucking hilarious so what I think I'm gonna do is just ride on /lg/'s wings here and get both your recommendations. I was worried that since the burger truck is retired it'd be expensive but I actually found one online for under 40 so I just sniped it before typing this post. I'm depending on you boys but I think it'll be fukkin based. The only thing is the motorcycle pack doesn't come with a ramp but he's got hotwheels out the ass so I think he's good.

That's true, and yet, I'm sure you're aware human nature takes you down the path of least resistance. If a label/story is attached to something it takes a higher amount of mental effort to "reshape" the narrative around said product. I'm not saying it isn't possible, I'm just saying it's not as easy as having been delivered a blank slate. You can of course take modern sets, throw away all of their "baggage" or even use them strictly as part packs.
I do that, opting for headswaps and other changes to suit my particular sensibilities.
I do not want TLG to raise my kids for me, I was simply enjoying the idea of having things the way they used to be, when people had more agency.
Money certainly talks louder than forums, I don't disagree with you. That doesn't mean we can't appreciate things.

As a heads up, you can clean the flywheels really easily, there's one screw that you can remove, pops the wheel out and you can clean it, doesn't expose the actual mechanism so you don't have to worry about springs n gears n shit flying out.

I used Tread Octane as the base; head, hair and legs all come from him. (Ordered mine from Ebay and it came with an engine and some snot plates because it was the magazine version which was neat)

Torso is from the Ferrari Speed Champions. I tried the Star Lord torso as well, but Travis without a graphic tee didn't look right to me.

Speed Champions torso comes with yellow hands, NMH1 Travis wears 1 leather glove, NMH3 he wears two black gloves, which is what I went with.

Weapon is a Light Sabre, two rounded modified 1x2 plates, an extra bar at the back and a drill/unicorn horn (89522, I got mine from the CMF Robot Repair guy from the current series).

Yeah, he's like £16 here, which is tempting, but too much to just be an impulse purchase. My ex bought me the Nigel Farage one from the same company back in 2016 and the print quality is pretty nice, so ironically if they brought out all the Mercs, I'd probably be willing to drop like £60 on the set like a spastic.

The issue of the bricks outright crumbling and breaking off like chocolate was solved.
Them getting hairline cracks due to the shit plastic, cheaper production processes, shortened cooling times and thinner bricks so they can't handle the stress of being connected for too long is universal and unrelated to what color the part is.
They seem to backpedal with some pieces, though, like those square and triangular flag pieces getting moulded in a somewhat softer material again recently.

I like the idea, but the changes looks to small, like you just put some bonus parts without any changes to models. I know you probably wanted to keep the keyparts of orginal design to make them still resemble the cars (like hood ect) but now they almost look like the wheels are hiding under those wings/elements, like they would be normal cars straped with some parts so they can mock spaceships. Maybe that was what your goin for, but it looks more like something from californian workshop would do for scifi convention, not spaceships.

yeah that's exactly what I did, I wanted to leave the main body of the cars mostly intact, remove the wheels and wheel arches, fill those gaps, add some other misc parts, I'm not going for spaceships, they are just flying cars, they don't have the ability to leave the atmosphere, I'm going for something near future and not super advanced tech, there is a little limited amount of space travel, hence the ayyy
I'm buying more speed champions to play with more styles and shapes

Not Lego in particular. It is an insurance company's job to take your money and put in the least amount of effort and money as possible. They will attempt to weasel out of any claim so make sure you keep meticulous records of the purchase, storage, and app/depreciation of your collection. You absolutely can not rely on common sense or after-the-fact calculation, they will deny you at every step. The only way to get insirance to pay is if your paperwork is comprehensively better than theirs and you update your account *literally* every move you make. Otherwise you're paying into the greastest vaporware scheme known to man. Good luck.
