Lives are a resource. By risking your life in the war, you are making an investment. Only a fool invests without knowing what they're investing in.
Morally, they deserve to know what they are investing in. Also morally, they deserve to lose their investment because they didn't look into it deep enough.
The only ones who were true victims were the ones who were drafted. But then again, it could be argued they deserved it because they failed to dodge the draft. They should have seen the draft coming and avoided it.
