Fossils are one of the more popular mons. I've used omastar before, absolute powerhouse but it sucks having to get surf to get him because there are quite a few other decent water types you can get much earlier. This guy is not one of them though.

I actually use maractus periodically on showdown, it's one of my favourite designs and it's fairly good at tanking and stalling if you use ingrain, cotton guard, leech seed and Giga drain while it's holding a big root.

Beheeyem and Elgyem are based, they have really good designs but are just so damned slow it's not worth using them when something like alakazam exists, I pray it gets a stat buff or something in a future gen.

In gen 2 i dont mind using seaking. Not great, but a fun challenge. Maybe if it was Water/Normal, and could use stab return it would be just a smidge better, at the very least it would stand out. Later gens when it has lightningrod it's actually super fun to use.

I wasn't a big fan of a lot of mons in gen 5 but Maractus ended up being one of my favorites, and I used it on a whim the first time I played White. I just wish it was physical instead of special it would be more interesting to use

I had completely forgotten about that! I don't know where that Seel went in my old game, cause i don't remember keeping it towards the end, but it was kind of broke since that game is all doubles. I must've had trouble back then with who to partner it with and probably benched it but I definitely used it for a good while.

Seel and Dewgong definitely fall off statistically, so they'll never be your main powerhouse, but in my runs I usually keep it just for the utility alone. It's worth noting that Spheal is also available so if you were looking for an offensive Water or Ice-type instead, it was usually better

I used one in my BW2 playthrough and it sucked. I was able to make Cherrim work in Diamond, that should tell you how bad Beheeyem is. Shame, cause it has a nice design.

Yeah I had Sealeo on my main team for a while as well now that you mention it but I don't think I liked it. Recently I went back and picked up the Poliwrath and it's currently on Ruby working towards becoming a Ribbon Master since its one of my favorite pokemon.
This is making me wanna start XD over now

Stall mons are horrific ingame yeah, this type of mon is probably the actual answer.

Ingame is incredibly lenient, you can get away with subpar stats pretty easily. But nobody wants to deal with drawn out fodder, which is why these kinda mons are really misfit for the current game structure.
Turbo shitmons still have usable attack and coverage usually, since opponent mons are gimped anyway it doesn't matter too much.

Beheeyem gets Analytic so its makes sense that its slow. The issue is that bulk is average at best and if you're not using it for Analytic purposes Reuinclus and Musharna are objectively better slow Psychics

A ton of people have used the Fossils, myself included. Omastar is bulky as fuck with 70/125/115 defenses and in Gen 1 115 Special was pretty good. The only neg was its abissmall speed but when you hitting hard like him that don't matter. Kabutops on the other hand is more mid with better good attack but every other Stat is average. Is still good in game but not as monstrous as Omastar.

On my last run of Blue version, I did transfer a Kabuto from Stadium in near the beginning of the game. He REALLY isn't very good. That was the same run that I discovered Tangela is the only Pokemon in Erika's gym capable of damaging Bulbasaur.

I have done both. Delcatty was because I wanted to use Assist a lot and figured Delcatty could take more hits, but it couldn't so I just boxed it.
I actually like Sunflora and wish it was stronger. Sunflowers are cool and i always name my Sunfloras either Aurelian or Sol Invictus. Really wish they had been Fire/Grass and given some usable Special Attack and Speed. Also I thought the one in PMD was kinda funny.

I used this in an “all desert” team in BW2 with Scrafty, Darmanitan, Krookodile, Crustle and Mandibuzz. It’s a really fun grass type and storm drain was pretty cool.

Passive Pokemon like Alomamola or Shuckle get very little usage I feel. Availability is also a big factor, how many people are gonna use Heatmor, a mediocre outclassed fire type found at the very end of the game?

The strongest in-game mons are ones that are fast and strong, as they can outspeed opponents and knock them out before they can do anything

Gen 1 movelists are wack and i'm quite sure they never tested them.
Like level up learnsets are always pretty iffy, but gen 1 is a fever dream.(Rhydon only learns normal moves, it also has a level 55 leer.)
There's a reason why the champion rivals team is infamously awful and its not cause they actually selected bad moves for him in particular.

Isn't this pretty common? They had an obvious bias towards Normal moves in gen 1, which is why they thought Rock was an acceptable defensive type.

No one used Pelipper unless they were running a nuzlocke and had no other choice. Low stats, slow, defensive, bad abilities, and all it really had going for it was being a good HM slave which no one counts as using. Even as an HM slave it was outclassed by Tropius.

I still love the Big P though. It turned me into a Rainfag when it got Drizzle. I used to hate the archetype, but I've learned to love it.

Generally its one move of element+normal. Considering dev history it makes sense but Rhydon seems to be the only one embodying the "Capumon" idea where special moves weren't a learnlist thing(though he actually predates elements at all) but a special feature of the mon itself.
Most mons in general are very barren by level 30, even the starters don't get better stabs until 40ish. The exceptions are pretty rare, like Fearow and Dugtrio.

These are my official adult champ teams, Haven't played any of these gens since they originally released, so I challenged myself by only using pokemon that Kid me didn't use.

Pokemons formula isn't actually as fucked as you'd expect, its just insanely toned down. Fodder trainers can be good, though they shouldn't actually be fodder but "lesser".
There is some logic to broad strokes of what pokemon does in terms of good game design.

and was never able to bring it up thanks to the nintendo name filter.

Still love the bugger, but he does have a LOT of problems now, no return, his most powerful attribute was stab tri attack with 3 statuses attached possibly, which now is just BAD for him. and his abilities are pretty shit, just lowers it on the pole of the normal/flying pole

Overall pyroar is VERY subpar, with a focus on special, it falls into the houndour camp of being stuck with only physical moves until later levels, and is such a pain to deal with. which is also why i still find XY to be subpar, the mons are forgettable when your unique fire type is shit compared to charizard for the 50th time.
