The kind that challenges its characters to deal with problems, not merely act out "being in the world of the IP" or "let's save the day" kinds of tropes.

I think that it's good that many species don't get featured much. There are so many kinds of pokemon that it makes sense that some simply don't inhabit places or exhibit behaviors that put it in the kinds of places where interesting fiction happens. The other side of this is that when a rarely featured pokemon appears, it needs to hit a home run and demonstrate what it uniquely has to offer a narrative while also showing that we should be happy not to see it too often. That preserves the mystique and gets the most mileage out of relatively untrodden paths.

That the author has no idea how what's written will be received. Scenes I felt were kinda dull connectors have stolen spotlights and bits I thought were profound have fallen flat. So while compliments on a work as a whole are well appreciated, it's comments on the individual bits that hit or missed that can provide actionable feedback letting the author develop a second-person perspective on how the piece looks to a reader on the other side of the screen.

Exactly what you describe in terms of needing to justify the usage of niche species in order to fairly give them a spotlight is what I’m going for in my Mystery Dungeon story. It’s a long story with a big world, so I have a lot in mind to showcase some underloved Pokemon without feeling like they’re being forced into relevance. I agree with your note on specific feedback, but think an equally valid way forward (that you could totally do in conjunction) would be to always keep your stories fresh and diverse in terms of emotion, word choice, structure, plot, character, etc; feeling like I’m reading the same chapter twice in a row is my worst feeling as a reader, so it’s my worst fear as an author, I don’t think you should ever let a story stagnate. You can still adjust to your successes and losses and tell a perfectly fluid story without allowing style or standards to stagnate.

Starting with Chapter 3's release in the next couple of days, the story will also be hosted on FanFiction.net, which I believe will be the last platform for this story, giving you the option to experience the adventure on its special site with bonus material, read it just on google docs if you only care about the story, or keep up with it on Ao3 or Ficnet if you're more active on those platforms. Didn't see any benefit to hosting it on Commaful or Wattpad, if I'm missing any major platform that it'd be beneficial to post on do let me know, but I think I've got all the bases covered.

Especially as the story gets longer and starts introducing more characters, settings, and storylines I'd really recommend sticking with the Google Site for easier navigation/categorization and the bonus materials. Think of the Google Site as having an Official Guidebook bundled with you instead of a paperback of just the story.

Comedy about a fat man with no pokemon knowledge getting pulled into the world via a Team Rocket portal fuckup. Is offered a job because the Boss finds him bizarre and wants to recoup his financial losses somewhat. It ends up going... poorly. The housemate is paying me in energy drinks to write chapters for him, and bitches when I write less than a thousand words a day. Life is suffering.

Ones that include dark themes but without massive amounts of edge (a small amount of edge can be a guilty pleasure though). I also like fics with pokemon POV especially when they have different perspectives because of the species and not just human ways of thinking.

Anyone got an interesting ideas around how potions and the like work so well? Do you go more of the route where they act as more painkillers/disinfectants or something more? I was thinking having them work really well on pokemon thanks to pokemon having special overcharged stem cells, but with serious wounds and injuries still needing a few days recovery in a centre.

Human medicine is pretty good but still not on par with pokemon-orientated treatment, since their society and tech seem to be built around pokemon as the focus above all else.

I’ve always viewed Pokémon as having magic-tier “energy cores” that act as a generator for the power for the supernatural abilities of Pokémon. Potions/revives rejuvenate that. I might be straying too far from canon though.

Pokeballs are practically magic as it is, and 'pokemon energy' could be a way to explain why human tech seems pretty limited in comparison. If it isn't related to pokemon or their energy, it's not as advanced and far more 'normal'.

One of the main characters is FTM and their chapters are 90% about it, the other two are lesbians with one of them coming out after a botched 'alakazam the gay away' attempt from the evil rich and white religious parents, Shirona is gay as well, Annabelle is non-binary, Alohan ninetails are confirmed to have same-sex relationships because of population control, and multiple minor characters are a mix of trans and/or gay as well.

Oh, and there's a Miltank that identifies as a dude. For some reason.

Yeah, that's the thought process I go for as far my writing goes. Things like guns don't exist in the Pokemon world I write in, as there was no point once Poke Balls were discovered (head canon).

To answer your question, no, I'm not really active here anymore (or anywhere else, for that matter). I still lurk on occasion, but I've only put on my nametag 2 times in the last 3 years or so, and it's been 4 years since I published a Pokemon fanfic.
I've been diverting my writing efforts to original work instead of fanfic. I still feel the urge to finish my big pile of old WIP Pokemon stories, but who knows if I'll ever get around to it.

Yeah. The first two chapters are alright, kind of just an intro so I don’t get how some anons are full doomer mode, like it hasn’t introduced anything substantial enough to hate on, I think they just dislike how the anon kinda posts like a fag which I can understand. The anons tearing it apart in the mystery dungeon thread were upset that it wasn’t grimedgy and that the author is having fun / making references to the game, but it seems really inoffensive so far, there is definitely worse shit floating at the surface of the pokemon fanfic world.

I'm the one that went on the several post critique of it in that thread. I have no problem with the author taking an immature tone, or that he is trying to have fun with it. I judge fanfiction by the same scale that I write it: as if actually attempting to create a fully-fledged piece of literature that is given every respect that a standalone OC might. I have a personal distaste for what the popular group of PMD readers considers 'fun', which turns me off of a clearly targeted work such as that one. It holds all the ingredients to become popular, but I don't think it will be something that I personally will consider well-written. It's not offensive in that sense, either, so it's not really worth getting heated about. At the very least it's not a novelization.

Used to run a quest on the cutedom thread in /trash/. The thread imploded but he continues the quest on a chapter-by-chapter using the prior's comments. A little shaky when it comes to proper syntax, but largely entertaining and extremely imaginative when it comes to interesting body types and compelling characterization. A smut peddler, obviously. I'm a huge fan and have been contributing to PDMD for quite a while. Even wrote a fanstory for it.

I saw that, didn’t really get involved since you and the author anon were kind of 1 on 1 and also I’m not that strongly critical, I enjoyed reading your critiques though. I respect your standpoint, for me I have a tough time taking any kind of fanfic seriously if it’s written like a full fledged work, for the same reason I have a tough time taking OC that’s written like a fanfic seriously. I don’t know if the story’s for me yet but what I will say is that combining Titans with dynamax kinda kicks ass and so does the idea of Volcanion being an active character in a non-edgy PMD fic, I’m pretty simple to please in that regard I guess. I thought your critiques were really solid and thought provoking though, do you have any recommendations of fics that you personally enjoy? I’m glad you popped up in this thread, cause I was wondering what fics you enjoyed when I saw your back and forth with the author.

There's a lot of pokemon activity on /trash/. Most of the porn generals don't want to have their subjects spammed with it, so usually secular groups of specific pokemon subjects spread out. /Cutedom/ also just happens to be a pokemon-dominated genre already. Keith is very good at what he does, even if it does stem from the idea that it's porn.

In case it wasn't that obvious from my tastes, I'm not hugely interested in reading most PMD stories, and find the common formatting uninteresting. As stated earlier, Keith and his PokeDom Mystery Dungeon are actually very good reads even in spite of the fact that it's a coomer project. Always a Servant by Gorgel is an excellent tragedy if you ever wanted to read about a manic downward lesbian spiral. The Tears in the Tapestry series from TraipsingExodus is solid, though suffers from some fairly significant narrative issues and a sometimes needlessly dark tone, which it inherited from it's admittedly-stronger sister series about mainline Pokemon. And of course, Dispatched Deferred is such a charming little thing already. Not sure if I'm forgetting anything else off the top of my head.

I'll throw in Power Trip, an old and complete work with some good twists on the usual formula in addition to executing common tropes with aplomb and having some real cool characters. It's a chunky read that could ultimately have maybe stood to have had some fat trimmed, but not so much so that it ever feels like it's wasting your time.

I will also second Mimiga's Ears series as a longtime reader of his work. I'll always have a soft spot for the first book in particular, but the whole series is worth your time.

I've dabbled with something like that, though not for pokemon in particular. As far as I discovered in my brief stint into that sort of thing, it's rather important that you don't think of the story as just a one-to-one extension of exactly what happened in the game. It's difficult to steer away from an outright novelization, but altering in-game and mechanical events to spin your own story/character seems to work out the best. Just off the top of my head, you could write a struggling party member with shit stats or nature as having a completely different made-up problem which then creates a conflict in the story. You'd also probably play the game incrementally with progressing your writing.

Sadly through AI generation because I do not have any illustration skills; the original file is giant though, I had a very clear idea of the shape/layout that I wanted and specific landmarks and kept tweaking/editing until I arrived at the one you see. I took a quick look at your link and the story barely seems to be started, have you already got it all planned out and are just playing catch-up? On that note I also found it a slog to get through some of the more flowery prose, especially the first chapter and introduction which could benefit from trimming down a few adjectives.

Not that my own intro is much better however, I must have rewritten it six or seven times now and I'm still not happy with it.

Why: If one feels more comfortable, and more likely to succeed, at ancillary works, they will be more attractive than doing the hard and uncertain writing part.
To what end: Sunk cost. With a site done, that becomes encouragement not to let the site languish. With a map done, that's something can be looked at for inspiration or guidance of "where to go next," just like an outline serves as a map for a plot when one is writing for a predetermined arc.

It may be less effort. If one is familiar with making sites or telling an AI to roll a seed and spit out a map, then "all that effort" is really not effort, it's play.

As for me, no sites, my map is a scrap of paper I penciled some notes on. But I'd sure let computer tools do the heavy lifting for me if I needed to create a map that looked like something other than crap. Kudos.

And that mindset is why 90% of fanfic authors never finish. You can’t wait for approval or until you’re waistdeep to keep yourself going, it’s gotta be an active push and you have to believe in yourself the whole time. I haven’t allowed myself the room to doubt that the story will pan out, so I had no reason not to make a site. It has 2 chapters now, but it won’t when it’s done, and I’d rather have been updating my site all along the way then suddenly decide to make one when there’s 50 chapters to import. The other reason for the site is simply the style, I like to have visual reference, trivia, categories, etc, and those are way easier to incorporate into a custom site than to try and monkey them onto FanFiction or Ao3.

And yes, I am just playing catch up. I’ve been outlining and refining this story ever since I first started the original mystery dungeon, starting as a tab in the back of my mind that I’ve pulled into becoming everything you see today. Also I understand what you mean on the intro, it’s sort of a necessary evil. This story has a lot to establish and I’m not the kind of author to trickle establishing details across the first 20 chapters, I want the nitty gritty out of the way in the first two chapters so the rest of it can just be an adventure with no handholding or lategame exposition dumps. It’s not for everyone, but again, when this story is 50 chapters I think people are gonna appreciate the boring establishing scenes all being frontloaded.

PMD is a campy, pulpy, ultimately wholesome universe with a lot of heart at its core; the characters are super dramatic and dynamic, the plots are treated like full on soap operas, everything is always cranked to 1000; I understand why many PMD authors take it in the opposite direction, but for me that timeless cheesy radio drama type feel of the early Mystery Dungeon games is exactly what I want to emulate. Those games have the perfect balance between immature spirit and soapy schmaltzy drama, a style that I think works perfectly and has given me so much inspiration over the years that I had to try my best to incorporate it into the written word.

It took a lot of guided prompting and patient editing, but yeah I’m not one of those tools who acts like image prompting is hard work, generating the map was the easiest and most fun part so far. And also yeah, having a site is good encouragement. I’ve always found more success in projects where I treat it like some kind of established success from the start instead of sheepishly waiting for people to cheer me on, so that’s what I’ve done here. As I said earlier, I haven’t allowed myself the room to believe that this will be anything other than a success, your own belief is the single most important resource any author or any artist could ever have; belief is what separates the triers from the succeeders. Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right.

It's pretty clear that he's offended already, and that the Natu is in a precarious position to be pissing people off, but I understand that you wanted to express the change of tone and Nathan's fear. Were I to write out the same thing myself, it'd probably be a bit something like:

It's maybe not the best, or even what you wanted out of that sentence, but it's not mincing any words. It has a speech tag that assists the sudden shift in tone, a physical reaction from Nathan that denotes his mental state and provides physical imagery, and a way to denote that Zangoose is going to continue speaking.

It's things like that you can improve on with your prose. It should go without saying that having sentences like "Adjacent to this is a gently flowing river of crystal clear freshwater," can be a road bump in the reader's pacing and generally just rambles on implicit details to what you already describe as a vital, life-giving water source.

Agreed. In addition to the meme baggage of "super serious" (evoking memories of the South Park running gag with Al Gore saying "super cereal" instead as a malaprop) it's also evocative of childish and adolescent speech patterns that use adjectives for superlative emphasis.

The problem with the original line, and what can be improved in Anon's suggestion, is that there is an unexploited opportunity (as Anon mentions) to SHOW Zangoose's emotional transition rather than TELL it after the fact. This needs to be done first, because it colors the spoken part. As originally written—some sort of dialog tag with present tense narration that's jumping out of POV (I presume this is narrator-as-protagonist and doing kind of a stream of consciousness thing to justify present tense) awkwardly for the sake of presuming something—it's closer to a script, which isn't disallowed, but it's easy to get into a habit of just writing the spoken lines and tagging, forgetting that when we shift attention we must refresh the portrayal.

Ex.

(MC says something stupid.)

Zangoose's ears twitched and his eyes narrowed. He squared up his posture and sucked a sharp breath while the fur across his shoulders stood on end. "Buddy," he growled deeply, "you'd better watch your mouth." He leaned in, and I felt so threatened I couldn't help but to sink into my sling, feeling small and needy of protection.

This is a fault of overloading one sentence. Long sentences can be cool, but they still need to be about one thing.

"Adjacent to this is a gently flowing river. Its waters are fresh, safe to drink, and crystal clear."

Two sentences cover two separate things—the river as a waterway and the water that flows in said waterway—and allows both to be better served without truly reducing the amount of described detail. Indeed, I've increased it, but it's easier to read because it's following an introduction/description pattern rather than wadding the whole thing up.

Using telling imagery is definitely my biggest habit to kick, I’m always trying to avoid that, and it really helps. As you guessed, your alternative isn’t exactly what I was going for/isn’t exactly how Nathan was feeling, but I think it’s a good example for me to apply in terms of standards. As for adverbs though, that’s another style thing that I’m pretty unflinching on; they’re not present in all of my writing, but they’re a big trope of childrens/ya fiction and pulp, both of which properly describe PMD and the ultimate tone I’m going for here. The rule of adverbs is not as rigid as some profess, they have a very important role in epics/fables which is again the overall tone I’m going for with the story.

I love all feedback, but stuff like Mimiga saying they don’t like the “Last Time On…” segment is way less helpful for my growth as an author than you providing specific examples, the things wrong with them, and how they could be improved. Nathan is not an adult. Note that the Guiding Spirit asks him about school in his quiz and he recalls his human voice as being high and whiny, his plot is indeed told as a stream of consciousness type deal so he doesn’t have the foresight, retrospect, or straightened bearings that some of the critiques have expected. Stuff like him not saying how he could identify the different grass, or saying stuff like “super serious” and his general over-trust in any person who gives him the time of day; he’s not a 30 year old Pokemon fan reflecting on his life with objectivity, he’s some random trainer from Hoenn who got sucked into an alternate universe of talking Pokemon, documenting this all in real time. I said it in the first thread, I am hyperconscious of my narrators; if you feel like you’re reading a teenager’s description of a social situation, it’s probably because the story is being told through the lens of said teenager.

Thank you as well for your examples on how you’d improve the stuff you found was clunky or didn’t work well, that is the best kind of critique I could ask for.

You've caught yourself in your error. First/present is a special kind of hell, because you can't narrate "normally," which is what's wrong in this line.

You have Zangoose's dialog in the same paragraph as Nathan's internal monologue (because there is no independent Narrator) and you're kinda cheating to allow Nathan to abuse as-Narrator privilege to read Zangoose's mind.

For the millionth time, I thrive off of unfiltered, specific feedback with suggestions for improvement, this thread and all the previous ones are full of anons being blunt with me and me appreciating their candor, which I’m transferring into my upcoming chapters. Sc 5 - My attention unravels.

You show things that aren't necessary, and tell things that are. The overall construction of the work makes it abundantly clear that whoever is penning the prose knows how to write, but only in one specific way, and that way is long past its service-by date.

That's my best attempt at being succinct, because I don't want to spend an hour taking a fine-toothed comb to this. I will instead offer up a suggestion: Read Nisioisin. I feel the author will likely give you plenty of ideas and techniques to chew on that you could integrate into the parts of the work. He's character-focused and dialogue heavy, so he's not a good source for building up skills when it comes to exposition, but there are plenty of authors that do that as is.

Side note: Really, there's no need to run the PMD introduction gauntlet (sc. 2/3). It is exists for and in service of the gameplay, and it has no business being in a piece of prose when what it establishes could be better handled in scenes dedicated to showing what the questions try to illustrate. This is a common pitfall that dozens and dozens of PMD writers fall victim to and it is confusing to me every single time to find yet another body blinking up at me from the hole.

Thanks for the feedback Anon, I really appreciate it. Some context that I think would explain your thoughts that you may be missing from previous threads: I am a childrens/YA author by trade and I 100% was trained in the outdated soapy epic style, something that I wear proudly. I know JKR kinda ran that style into the ground but it’s a style I enjoy, this has been a 15+ year passion project for me and a long awaited opportunity to write something with less constraints and more emphasis on having fun as an author, a feeling I’ve been missing for a little while. I do make more intellectual, “adult” writing but felt it a tad inappropriate for the story I’m aiming to tell here, though learning how much anons love it has got me thinking that maybe I should write some on the side to spice things up. My final bit of previous thread context I’ll give is that the Quiz has been very controversial, but it has a plot purpose. Even when writing YA, I don’t write scenes without a larger purpose, even if it doesn’t seem that way in the moment. Yes the quiz was incorporated out of love to the games, but first and foremost I found a way to integrate it into the actual story, which actually is first alluded to in the upcoming 3rd chapter.

I can’t say enough how much I appreciate your feedback, as I said to the other anon, changing telling language to showing language is my biggest hurdle that I’m trying to get over, and seeing more and more examples just helps me more to see where I’m going off the rails. I elaborated more in other thread(s) but by that I mean it’s full of concepts and characters that have been brewing since I played the original PMD 15+ years ago. Nathan for example is a character I’ve always had in mind, but then conversely Volcanion who shows up in the first scene was about a cool decade away from existing at that point in time. I don't know if you do. I wasn't commenting on the events that transpire during the short intro but the way you went about describing them. There's establishing details so you don't have to either, and then there's writing:
'A circle of Pokémon stand creepily in a ritualistic fashion around the perimeter of the room, all donning velvety red cloaks which conceal their identities with dark shadows. The most eerie part is that none of these Pokémon are afraid like any reasonable person should be in this situation, in fact some of them are even smiling.'

It just comes across as clunky to read, especially the 'creepily' part. I can figure out the sinister atmosphere from the cultist vibe you describe, you don't need to further tell me how to interpret the vibe.

Anyway, I'm not the other anon who was already critiquing you on the other thread, I'm just one trying to help keep the thread alive during american downtime. I've never played PMD myself and I have limited knowledge about the events of the games, but I've read one or two PMD fics. That makes at least two readers who have brought up complaints about how you're writing your fic, and from what I've seen in the thread you haven't received many positive responses in regards to the descriptive style.

Who is your target audience for this? I understand not wanting to write 'PMD: Team Murder-Rape Ho!' and instead an adventure more in line with the plot of the games themselves, but it does come across as fairly childish. Mostly in how the MC is presented with what little character information we have on him in the first two chapters. Personal preference is a thing, but there's a thin line between naïve, childlike-wonder and 'pokemon fic protagonist 4563 with less spine than a tentacool'. Is he meant to be eight or closer to the age of 12-13?

Also unrelated nitpick, but I noticed you stated that the protag would only remember his name:
"I will reward you with one reminder of your previous world: your name", but he is then able to remember all of his home regions, that zangoose are from Hoenn, and " When he said the name Zangoose I was suddenly jolted with a memory; I have seen one before – back home".

Seems like far more than just one reminder. Is the apparent amnesia even needed at this point or is it an effort to follow along with the start of the games themselves?

I've already attempted to adapt to the complaints on imagery and clunky sentence structure in the upcoming 3rd chapter, I'm thinking it'll probably be worthwhile to do a revision of the first two chapters accordingly. Nathan is 10-13. He's smart but he's gullible. He's been around the block, but he doesn't have worldly experience, he's a bit of a nerd dependent on someone to strongly guide me. Ultimately this is the start of a long story, I'm not gonna start out with a brave and seasoned hero, that's a journey the audience will get to experience for themselves.

Also, when Nathan first confers with the Guiding Spirit and he's thinking of that argument from his home universe, the Spirit says

His memories are spotty; certain sensations, like seeing a Pokémon he recognizes or being reminded of volcanoes might bring back memories of home. The purpose of the reminder line from the Spirit is to say that it's giving him a freebie; he'll have to go through the world in order to jog his memories, but she let him remember his name since he 'passed' the quiz. While it is included in tribute to the games, his amnesia is central to both the development of the plot and his overall character, like the Personality Quiz I didn't include it just to include it, I found ways to make them meaningfully woven into the plot.

I don't think you realize the kind of shit kids want to read when they're young. I was into Paul Zindel books just so I could get to the parts where velociraptors stabbed their talons up through the soft tissue beneath the chins of their victims, or people being executed by getting put into drowning tanks and forcing neurotoxic fish to sting them.

Now that isn't to say that it's not the primary PMD market because it surely is, but I reckon most of the posters you're gonna find will be more interested in more mature themes and cleaner literature.

In the past, I have written a fairly sizable mainline fic that's in the style/is a love letter to the magical girl genre (specifically Precure in this case), which in itself is stereotypically a concept aimed at little girls as Saturday morning cartoons. It has all the bells and whistles that the show might have, and was more or less fairly lighthearted and humorous, but I treated the story and my audience with the same respect and expectations I would give to any actual peer. The story was silly, and hugely experimental to a fault at times, but it was a serious endeavor to me. Now I'm no children's authors, and I don't think I would ever get there without automatically putting myself into a young adult category, but generally speaking that's what I want to see out of what I'm reading here.

The good ones are hard to find. There's a lot of garbage out there, almost as much bad smut as there are bad other-things. None of these authors are perfect, I would say, but they're all pretty good and that's something to be lauded given how low the average is. I've had to start blacklisting authors who fucking spam little 200 word drabbles about piss inflation or whatever the fuck. I hate browsing AO3 so much.

I get really vivid visions of scenes in my mind, and not being able to address them is really frustrating. And of course most of these are the endgame of the story, and to make those moments as triumphant and epic in my mind the characters have to earn it, which I'm sure will take a ton of chapters.

Yeah, I remember us chatting about that story idea. It's at the top of my aforementioned pile of unfinished fics.
I had ideas for what to write, and wrote drafts of the 1st chapter and part of the 2nd. But I ended up hitting a wall and feeling like what I wrote so far was no good, and I never went back and tried rewriting it. I actually looked at it again recently, for the first time in a couple years, and it definitely needs a rewrite if I'm ever to publish it.
I regret not completing that project. I hope you're not too disappointed. But I guess there's always a chance I'll hunker down and take another crack at it someday.

Since the story was inspired by my horsing around with AI image tools, I have the final form. Horny models/loras mean too much delicious food for a blue board or Christian manga, but the head shot is what was most strongly described and the rest isn't in keeping with the limits to which I bend on-model for the sake of smoother storytelling anyway.

The general public services are strongly encouraged to censor prompts and output because they can get scapegoated for the prompts of people who might use the tool to break taboos. But it's trivial for someone with beefy GPU to go to a site with tagged art that is relevant to their interests and train on what they want. So, an e6-trained model's going to give e6 kinds of results. (e6 has an AI output counterpart now, btw, but it's very low traffic.)

Caveat emptor, what goes into a model is what comes out. It's like super lossy compression with super error correction on a portfolio to be used for photo collage. I would advise against downloading anything that isn't specifically trained within the art sites that you're comfortable browsing or that comes from dubious sources. I've been sticking to links to one of the least-seedy looking model sites (Civit AI). And once you have one good model, you can play with loras to get a lot of interesting results; they're like game mods and even if it's not for what you intend at low power it can make output a lot less generic.

Secondly how long is this fic going to be and is there any major plot? How would this even work? Sure, maybe you'd get words like 'stick', 'food', 'water', etc, but a human infant learning a language needs more than just repetition of words from a non-human creature with no similar facial features. Also, if the Chatot knows human words then it would know that the baby is a human, negating the core idea of the fic idea.

For the fic idea to work it needs a true remote region where the pokemon he interacts with (at least in the start of the fic) have no prior knowledge of humans. Otherwise you're pretty much going to be essentially rewriting Tarzan.

There might be some room to play with the raised/trained by pokemon angle insofar as in canon we have people (e.g. psychics, black belts) who train with pokemon and seem to pick up a tiny fraction of the power. Having him raised by the correct species could allow for a human character with interesting poke-characteristics, but only if it's relevant to the core conflict.

Which is missing from this elevator pitch.

There's not much conflict in someone wondering what "kind of pokemon" he is when either he's been among very few kinds (and would know that he's significantly different and be ignorant of the thousand kinds of pokemon that could be alternatives for him to try to identify with) or many kinds (he would presume that he's just another kind that the other pokemon aren't familiar with) and resolving it wouldn't really change him or develop his character. And being not inculcated with complicated philosophical crap like "place in ecosystem/society/etc" to muddy his mind, he would probably figure his place to be wherever he's been, doing what he's been doing.

If the core conflict is wild-man versus society by having him be rediscovered, you've got a lot of fish-out-of-water tropes at hand, most of which having been worked to death already in mass media.

That gives the story a question to discuss and answer, allows you to tackle the eternal unresolved nature-nurture topic, shoot your scenes from pokemon perspectives and have an interesting role reversal where the pokemon can talk but the human cannot communicate beyond gestures and familiar vocalizations, and you can avoid lots of the Tarzan Makes Contact tropes that would easily bog things down and make the story pick up some of the feel of a rehash.

I do have a core plot in mind, but I don’t wanna give it away since the story is so short and only has one central storyline. I'd guess because it keeps it simple.

Because in that case, their frame of reference is that this must be some unknown kind of pokemon, since pokemon is the only advanced animal they know of, unless you're going with the "literally no animals exist except for pokemon and humans canon in which case the only thing they could think is that it's a pokemon.

If your pokemon know about humans, then you need to deal with how they feel about humans. Do they like humans? Loathe them? Would they feel that they should tend to the human, or return it to people? Adds a lot of social drama which pushes it toward PMD-y, which was stated a moment ago to be undesired.

On the subject of the Pokemon choosing to the raise him, it’s not really a matter of “Do we accept the human?” as that personifies the Pokemon a little too much for my taste, it’s more like when a monkey or a duck finds a stranded baby and takes it in as its own. For our protagonist, a mother Ursaring catches him playing around with her cubs, and seeing that he’s an abandoned (furless) baby she takes him into their sleuth. Growing up alongside his Teddiursa brothers and sisters, he learns to hunt, forage, brawl, fish, kill, and survive.

I think the thread header used to have a catalog of sorts, but when the threads started dying due to the PMD Flood and Discord diaspora, it went unmaintained and forgotten, especially now that the copy pasta thread header only shows up at about a 50% rate. Also I think that it was more of a self-promote list than an "everyone here likes these" kind of thing: I vaguely and distantly remember people asking why Fic X or Y wasn't in the catalog (the author wasn't a thread regular or didn't bother to ask to be entered).

I think in your attempt to make Ash sound badass you deliberately twisted the truth and omitted facts to hide the fact that he’s kinda an average trainer, that’s what kept the story compelling for so long. He probably will get mad bitches when he’s older, but that’s because he’s nice and funny and isn’t a hideous whale, nothing about him as a trainer sticks out, except for how much he’s gotten bent by champions.

Trying to quantify whether the board truly does or doesn’t like something sounds like a massive time wasting headache that’ll ultimately just lead to elitism and a lack of participation in the threads. How many comprehensive catalogs of work are also specifically curated? None. I think it should be that every single story that gets posted here, be it posted by the author or discovered by an anon, should go onto this hypothetical new master list. It would require one or more people keeping a perpetual eye on the thread, but it would be worth it to have the largest possible record of fics.

The League pays it's members generously, the boy has more money than he knows what to do with after paying for his mom to go back to college and once mused about doing some tests with Oak that involved exploding Evolution Stones.
I don't just mean they've given him tips during a match, he's been on multiple months long training sessions with Lance and Steven.
You're getting him confused with Anime Ash.
His mother makes a point about chewing out Lance, possibly the strongest trainer in the world in the setting, about how every time she sees her son again he's got several new scars. The boy got shot through the heart by Mew and has only -almost- died fighting Team Rocket a handful of times.
My conclusion is up for debate, but I'm only downplaying any of the points I bring up.

Not to shit up the thread, but Fimfiction thread on /mlp/ did starter kit voting 3 times now and only one of them went nowhere. I don't know how active this thread is, but it seems about on par. Most recently, we just nominated fics and counted the number of nominations, to avoid overcomplicating things.
Previous attempts were tracked by a bot that checked the thread for >nomination tags and shit, and allowed for votes AGAINST stories, but that was a bit of a headache and resulted in a hard-to-understand list, where all "recommended" fics for an entire genre had negative points.

I just noticed 'Would it matter if I was?' is on the starter kit. I happened to read it the other day and I hold a very strong belief that it shouldn't be on there. It wasn't bad, but it was nothing more than "alright".
Nothing about it stands out in the sea of 1 on 1 dialogue oneshots, and Twilight and Fluttershy spend half of it snapping at each other, one of them being presented as obviously in the right.
It makes one good point at the beginning of the story, and... there are also other words after it.

That quickly becomes overwhelming and redundant against a link to AO3's search page.

My vision would be two sections.

1. /vpwt/ authors. Handle, link(s) to story galleries, and one sentence to describe the author's work succinctly. That would be easily for new people to scan for things that might be worth a click. It also means a lot of our stories are covered collectively.

2. Non-thread favorites. This would be curated and probably best handled by judging according to how the authors and readers in this thread overall feel about a piece, and would be good for stories that thread authors don't cover. E.g., I don't think anyone here does nuzlocke stories, so if there's a good one, that would be something for section 2.

I think it isn't wholly PMD's fault, it's not like it came in and destroyed anything. Rather, pokemon fiction has a few broad categories and mostly this thread was one part lemon and three parts mainline-verse; people in a world with pokemon, be they canon characters or OC's or mary sues.

At about one time, a lot of the mainliners finished stories and either quit to make their own franchises (e.g. Ee4ee) or went on sabbatical from writing in favor of trying other hobbies for a while (e.g. myself), and a new cadre of PMD authors showed up.

If I remember right, it's been a while, we had one guy dropping chapters about weekly on something like a computer programmer with a pokemon in the office (totally not sure if that's right) and three PMD authors pretty much occupying the whole space with PMD. And that's fine except that it means everyone here who was here for Mainline is not getting what they're interested in.

Traffic falls, volunteer thread bumpers become discouraged when all the posts are bumps between PMD drops that no longer get any discussion because so many people have drifted away.

And then there's the Discord which simply doesn't make sense since writing isn't a real time communications game, and the ease to read /vpwt/ isn't matched by Discord, where either the chatter causes any insightful discussion to scroll away swiftly, or it's not convenient to find new posts (especially if it's split across channels), making it a poor substitute for the thread.

/vpwt/ is great for writing because you can write, when you need a break check the thread, then go write again. A writer doesn't need the distraction of Discord making bloop noises and putting red dots with numbers in them on your screen. At least, I know that I sure don't.

I don't think it needs to be separated into subsections, but it would be important to mention in the Section 1 thread author's blurb. Mainline and PMD are simply too different for a prospective reader to not want to know which is which. Same for explicit content, if an author is strictly lemon or clean (or nearly so) it'd be worth noting, but by linking to the author's catalog, the stories will have their content levels indicated there.

But then, I suppose magical girls is an even more niche subject to breach than even PMD. I think a lot of changes happened in the wrong places at the wrong times and urged the decline on. And now we're here in some sort of post-apocalyptic writethread, which honestly isn't that bad right now. For more conventional trainerfics, the most talked about ones I see are:
"Borne of Caution" by Fuggman (Isekai comfy Hoenn adventure, it's the most popular)
"Hard Enough," by Viva01 (Brock SI)

All of these fanfics have their flaws, but they're good enough in other areas to be enjoyable I've found. There are tons of other fanfics out there of varying quality. For PMD, I will third cge's catalog and I like Mimiga's work>>53189001 I'm not a huge fan of the PMD genre, but these are the only two writers I'll read. I've only written smut so far so I won't shill myself to you (plus I've already shilled myself in the thread already).

Because I'm such an adept editor, I struggle to read stories without either being distracted by my mind switching into Red Pen mode, or finding a beat in the story where I think, "It would've been more interesting if instead, *this* happened," and then I'm distracted thinking of another plot and if I'm going to do that I could be writing. Indeed, writing is how I read for pleasure, I just transcribe the story my imagination reads to me and share it for those whose imaginations aren't storytellers.

The Protag is around late 20, early 30 so you don't have to worry about a Shinji type character. Protag dose have issue with his father but that mostly due to what happened during the war, so take of that as you will. I want to have the protag struggle living with not only the pokemon but how peaceful the world is and not wanting to corrupting it from the horrors of his world. So protag dose everything in his power to try to "Play by their rule" so to say. So only times firearms are ever pulled out is when shit really bad. As in the oh crap a lot of people are going to die type situation. Now the whole 'pokemon are weapons' thing is interesting as i havn't really thought of it that way. One of my biggest pet peeves is how many writer treat pokemon as nothing more then props instead of their own character. The protag interaction with his pokemon would create interesting interaction and dilemma. The protag could treats some with fatherly care while other with a stern commander type attitude while the pokemon in turn could help protag learn to live in the pokemon world. It could also be a good way to show what kind person Protag was during and after the war and how it effect him to this day. Also Protag paranoia and pre isekai life would also impact the story as it push him to teach his pokemon how to fight. Not in the Pokémon battle we see in anime but more like the my life dependence on it type fighting. After protag get settled in I could see the various organization trying to get protag to working for them and the conflict that can arise.

If your late even by a second you are given a "Ticket" and after like two or three you got detention no matter what. Starting with a conjunction is fine when it's quoted (because people to speak like that; often indicating that something related came to the speaker's mind as the prior sentence ended) and when it's elaborating on the topic (on-topic enough for the same paragraph) but isn't elaborating on the previous sentence itself but rather the paragraph topic so it wouldn't be appropriate to stitch them together with a semicolon but just spouting the second sentence without a conjunction makes the sentences seem unrelated.

The danger is when it becomes a habit and turns a writer's work into run on sentences "fixed" by periods before the running-on conjunction. It's almost as bad as meaningless "like" infestation in spoken English.

As has been discussed earlier in the thread, no such thing exists but there are certain authors who get thrown around when people ask. Any idea what you're in the mood for? I must confess, I hardly read any "traditional" prose these days due to the deluge of books out on the market. It's not easy to discern what would be to one's taste *and* of decent quality. For a medium like fanfiction, there's no cost in testing the waters of a work and skipping around real quick to discern if it is something worth your time or not.

With dead paper tree format, digital works only offer so many pages as a demo, often the best sliver of it while leaving out the rest that may as well be dumpster trash. As for going to the actual bookstore, the only indication you have of any interest is the back cover and trying to peruse books real quick one at the time. This wouldn't be a problem, save for the fact that I don't go out often these days due to various IRL issues, meaning the opportunity to scan a book's contents in depth is limited. Even if I were to get the opportunity, it takes time to discern for more traditional fare to be dissected in depth before knowing if it's worth my time or not. One way I have gotten passed this is by photographing the book's front cover and checking out a... Find in the great sea as it were, which helps alleviates this somewhat. But it isn't as convenient as just plucking a hyperlink and perusing at will.

Still, online platforms where semi traditional prose such as Royal Roads has a nice selection, provided the author doesn't pull a shit move by skubbing the work and taking it to Amazon only. Calibre/fanficfare has been helpful in this regard in preserving the works when I find them, but it's annoying when it happens.

Not to mention, quite of the few writers I have read from often have recommendations to other works that might be of interest to me. Still, there's such a volume online that it's hard to know where to start sometimes.

That may be a symptom of one just playing the games only, or perhaps just as how the anime sometimes treat their Pokemon characters. Unlike Digimon, Pokemon are, or at least were as far as my knowledge of the anime up to the Hoenn region is concerned, treated as less of a focused narrative importance. That isn't to say they don't always do so, such as with legendaries, Ash's starter and other mons, and the like, but it probably reflects on how a writer illustrates their own mons going forward.

Aside from that, there's also the matter of how a writer interprets their mons based on their own head canon, the anime, games, and so on. Some writers just don't give a damn, often caring more for the human characters as a focus and the mons being more or less vehicles to get from Point A to Point B. For those that don't, their mons tend to trend towards a more humanistic interpretation, if not outright humans in fursuits. Not that isn't a bad thing necessarily, but it's a fine balance that some just don't want to tightrope on.

That, and the more focus you give to the mons as actual characters, the more characters you have to juggle in your head to keep track of. Focusing strictly on the trainer means you have less moving pieces to worry about. Even if you were to stick with just six mons in total, that's *still* six characters and the dynamics you have between them and the trainer you have to keep track of at all times. It can get messy *real* quick if you don't keep a careful track of it all and devolve into an incoherent, unholy mess of threads that never get resolved and other stuff. God help you if you decide to try and add more and more characters to the fire as the trainer in question catches more.

Seeing as how a nuzlocke forces such importance on any mons that you capture and remain with throughout such a run, and the investment made to keep them alive at all cost due to the lack of catching any alternatives, it incentivizes the player to bond with their mons, knowingly or not. Throughout all the highs and lows, you are there for it all, and it becomes all the more devastating when said mon is lost in some fashion you could have prevented, or not in some form of a critical hit or the like. Such is reflected in the various nuzlockes that take fic and comic form, and may be an answer for you to find trainer fics that have bonds with their mons.

Even when I have it pointed out by others, I still find difficulties in troubleshooting my first draft on a reading due to the personal preference in my reading style and reading speed. Just recently, I have been told that my work often has passages that are overly long and rarely varied in their cadence, meandering longer than they should have instead of being quick and decisive. My question then becomes how do I spot and focus on those errors in the first place? Better yet, how do I at least mitigate it in the first draft? I know it is bad practice to attempt to correct and repair while in the middle of your first draft, but I am of the belief it would be better to nip such bad habits and errors in the bud early, rather than make more work for myself. come the second and third draft revisions.

Woith that in mind, what set of practices would be optimal to mitigate any corrections that need to be made come the 2nd and 3rd draft?

I have a director’s brain so I see the whole stage, I start by visualizing the start and end of the scene, then I find the most natural and satisfying way to bridge the two. Always know where you’re going and how you’re getting there.

Not entirely sure what you mean by this when compared to the next question, but if by material you mean other prose then none, you’re doing yourself and your readers a disservice if you’re “fueling” yourself with other people’s work, that’s no way to find your own voice.

Music, nothing puts a clearer head for a scene, character, or story in my mind than music; I always listen while writing, I get the most vivid visuals in my mind. Certain songs, albums, or artists will in turn end up being delegated to certain characters, stories, plots, etc.

When you’re doing choral vocal warmups, you have to visualize the highest and lowest notes you intend to hit or else your unrelaxed vocal chords will have no hope of hitting them. Writing works very much the same way, if you jump from fucking around online to writing you’re gonna have a slow start, you need to begin all writing with a clear mind and a clear purpose, never write out of necessity or obligation.

Your chapter should have an overall purpose and an overall conflict, and both of those things should at the very least be alluded to in the first scene of the chapter, but more often than not you should want your audience to be able to identify those things from that first scene. Chapters aren’t just linebreaks in walls of text, they’re all microcosmic stories building to the larger narrative, they should have the same orientation with which you aim to get your overall story across.

You can’t without other people. Feedback like that is the only true way to improve, you can’t troubleshoot your own work. A faulty engineer isn’t going to realize the fatal flaw in their vehicle while constructing it.

There are songs which provide narrative texture and inform me of directions I would like a story to go, and songs which I take the structure of and translate more or less literally into the choreography of a scene as if it were already scoring it. This also helps in that you can dip back into a certain artist or album whenever you lack drive and want to put yourself back into the headspace of the story.

The second question is more nebulous. Scenes should start by establishing everything they need to allow the reader to put themselves where they need to be. Though there are many approaches and it's not necessarily a science for me, I try to establish the narrator's PoV first (I usually only write in Third Person Limited). If not that, then usually a piece of scenery or imagery that I want to focus on first to set the scene. It's just a matter of cinematography. Where is the camera pointing first when it all switches over? Are there characters speaking, and is what they're saying more important than the immediate surroundings? Chapters end when they end, and they begin the next time there is important information for the reader to know.

Troubleshooting is easier because I have spent years and years comparing my work to my peers, have had them comparing to mine, reading different works and being read by more well-read individuals. It's largely experience.

First do some reading about writing basics: story structures, show don't tell, themes, scene setting, characterization, etc. Just some articles that will help give you an understanding of what you want to absorb from the books you read. Then find some literature that seems interesting to you and have at it. Try to spend some time thinking critically about how they approached those writing concepts and how you might use those ideas.

Spending the effort to learn about how to write well will put you in a much better starting position, but more importantly it will help you gain more from your first attempts where fanfic writers are often just flailing wildly and learning very little from the effort.

What do you think would work best? My gut feeling is to have him naturally come to the conclusion of “Oh if we do [box legendary shenanigan] then we can achieve our goal way easier” and then that gradually evolves into the type of plot we expect to see from our classic evil teams. Editing should really only be done when everything is on paper. That way you can lead dialogue and events towards a tangible goal.

Depends on the actual age gap I guess. I mean, in the utopic world of Pokémon, everything is pure and innocent. 10 year olds, maybe even younger kids travel by themselves all the time and nothing seems to ever happen. Sex doesn't canonically exist.

Then you have supporting characters in the games like Arven who are clearly older than the MC (he's got sideburns all the way to his jawline so he's at the very least 16 while the MC is like 10-12) which people don't seem to find weird but would definitely be considered weird IRL.
