My take is that Mandarin is far easier. Even learning Japanese with the Chinese background was still pretty frustrating by comparison.
I don't know, maybe it would be harder going the other way around? Knowing Japanese with its intense grammar and super-overloaded pronunciations for each character, and then going to a simpler system? It doesn't seem like that would be as hard.
