Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia – Hopes for dozens of students feared trapped in rubble at a collapsed boarding school have turned to anguish as authorities shift their focus from rescue to recovery.

Suharyanto, the head of Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency, told a news conference on Thursday that thermal drones and other equipment had found “no additional signs of life” at Al-Khoziny Islamic Boarding School.

Relatives of the missing students collapsed in the streets around the site and wailed in anguish upon hearing the news.

Authorities said they would bring in heavy machinery to assist in recovery efforts.

Until now, they had resisted bringing in excavators to clear the debris for fear of harming anyone trapped alive.

Authorities have sealed off the school, which officials say collapsed as construction workers were laying concrete on the building’s fourth floor, as rescuers continue to painstakingly pick through the debris for the 59 people believed missing.

But even hundreds of metres from the scene, the smell of decomposing bodies was overwhelming.

Trump's religious adviser pleads guilty to child molestation, imprisoned as a sex offender

Robert Morris, the Texas megachurch pastor who built Gateway Church into one of the largest congregations in the country, pleaded guilty Thursday in Osage County District Court to charges that he sexually abused a girl in the 1980s.

Morris, 64, entered the plea before Judge Cindy Pickerill, admitting to five felony counts of lewd or indecent acts with a child. Under a negotiated plea agreement, he was given a 10-year sentence, but he will serve only six months in the county jail. He must also register as a sex offender and pay $250,000 in restitution.

Morris was handcuffed and taken into custody after Thursday's hearing.

Cindy Clemishire, the woman who accused Morris of molesting her at age 12, sat in the courtroom, surrounded by family, as Morris accepted responsibility — a moment she sought for decades.

The plea represents a remarkable fall for Morris, who founded Gateway in 2000 in Southlake, Texas, and grew it into a megachurch with tens of thousands of weekly attendees. His sermons were broadcast to audiences around the world, his books became bestsellers in evangelical circles, and he served as a faith adviser to President Donald Trump.

That career collapsed in June 2024 after Clemishire, 55, publicly accused him of sexually abusing her. Within days, Gateway announced that Morris was stepping down. In a statement at the time, Morris acknowledged what he described as “a moral failure” with a “young lady” decades earlier but didn’t respond to the specifics of the allegation.

At the heart of the standoff is Democratic Party demands that Republicans agree to an additional $700bn in spending by restoring cuts to healthcare that were enacted over the summer and make permanent the expiring temporary COVID emergency health care credits enacted in 2023 that are due to expire Jan 1, 2026.

> Judge denies motion to reopen Kilmar Abrego Garcia's immigration case

> An immigration judge on Wednesday denied a motion filed by Kilmar Abrego Garcia's attorneys to reopen his immigration case, according to a copy of the decision obtained by ABC News.

> In the emergency motion filed in August to reopen the case, attorneys for the wrongly deported Abrego Garcia argued that because he was deported to El Salvador and then brought back to the United States, he is now eligible to apply for asylum within one year of his last entry into the U.S.

> But in the order filed on Wednesday, Regional Deputy Chief Immigration Judge Philip Taylor said that Abrego Garcia's motion to reopen his motion to seek asylum is "untimely" because he filed the motion nearly six years after his immigration proceedings -- beyond the 90-day deadline required.

> Judge Taylor also concluded there is "insufficient evidence" that the Department of Homeland Security has decided to remove Abrego Garcia to Uganda, Eswatini, or any other third country, after the DHS sent Abrego Garcia's attorneys a notice in August saying the agency may deport their client to Uganda.

> "The word 'may' is permissive and indicates to the Court that in sending this notification to Respondent's counsel, the Department sought to convey that it reserved the right to remove him to Uganda, not necessarily that it intended to do so, that it had decided to do so, or that it would do so imminently," Judge Taylor said.

Trump threatens Chicago with holy war

Trump threatens Chicago with apocalyptic force and Pritzker calls him a ‘wannabe dictator’.
Trump says "I love the smell of deportations in the morning"
https://apnews.com/article/trump-chicago-immigration-war-department-pritzker-1f6b2a08ed8aab04f0caf02ef506aafa
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Saturday amplified his promises to send National Guard troops and immigration agents to Chicago by posting a parody image from “Apocalypse Now” featuring a ball of flames as helicopters zoom over the nation’s third-largest city.

“‘I love the smell of deportations in the morning,’” Trump wrote on his social media site. “Chicago about to find out why it’s called the Department of WAR.”

The president offered no details beyond the label “Chipocalypse Now,” a play on the title of Francis Ford Coppola’s dystopian 1979 film set in the Vietnam war, in which a character says: “I love the smell of napalm in the morning.”

In response to the post, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, a Democrat, called Trump a “wannabe dictator.”

Trump on Friday signed an executive order seeking to rename the Defense Department the Department of War, after months of campaigning to be considered for the Nobel Peace Prize. The renaming requires congressional approval.

The illustration in Trump’s post shows him against a backdrop of the Chicago skyline, wearing a hat matching that of the movie’s war-loving and amoral Lt. Col. Kilgore, played by Robert Duvall.

Trump’s weekend post follows his repeated threats to add Chicago to the list of other Democratic-led cities he’s targeted for expanded federal enforcement. His administration is set to step up immigration enforcement in Chicago, as it did in Los Angeles, and deploy National Guard troops.

In addition to sending troops to Los Angeles in June, Trump has deployed them since last month in Washington, as part of his unprecedented law enforcement takeover of the nation’s capital.

White House withdraws nomination of think tank crony for Bureau of Labor Statistics

https://www.npr.org/2025/10/01/nx-s1-5559284/trumps-controversial-nominee-drops-bid-to-head-vital-data-gathering-agency

President Trump's nominee to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics has withdrawn after widespread criticism that he was too partisan and inexperienced to hold such an important role in government.

A White House official confirmed the move, saying Trump would name a replacement for nominee E.J. Antoni "very soon."

The BLS produces some of the government's most closely-watched economic reports, including monthly updates on jobs and inflation. All of its reports are on hold for now until the government shutdown is resolved.

Trump had tapped Antoni to lead the bureau in August after abruptly firing the previous BLS commissioner, Erika McEntarfer, over a disappointing jobs report. The president claimed that the jobs numbers had been manipulated to embarrass him, although he offered no evidence to support that, and the claim was dismissed by independent observers.

Italy deploys the military to escort aids for Palestinians

https://www.straitstimes.com/world/europe/Italy-sends-navy-ship-to-help-Gaza-aid-flotilla-after-drone-attack
ATHENS/ROME - An international aid flotilla trying to deliver aid to Gaza said on Wednesday it was attacked overnight by drones in international waters off Greece, prompting Italy to send a navy ship to come to its assistance.
The Global Sumud Flotilla is using about 50 civilian boats to try and break Israel's naval blockade of Gaza, with many lawyers and activists onboard, including Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg.
The vessels were attacked by 12 drones in international waters 30 nautical miles (56 km) off the Greek island of Gavdos, said Marikaiti Stasinou, a spokesperson for March to Gaza Greece, which is part of the flotilla.
