US government scrambles to stop new hacking campaign blamed on China

https://www.dailyherald.com/20250925/nation-and-world/us-government-scrambles-to-stop-new-hacking-campaign-blamed-on-china/

Federal agencies are racing to contain a new wave of sophisticated hacking by suspected Chinese attackers that took advantage of previously undiscovered flaws in widely used security software from networking company Cisco.

The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency issued a rare emergency directive on Thursday, ordering all civilian agencies to test Cisco firewall equipment before midnight Friday to see if it had been breached. Agencies must immediately disconnect devices that have been compromised, the directive said.

The CISA said that hundreds of potentially vulnerable devices were installed in federal networks and that some operated by private firms were used to protect critical infrastructure.

Because firewall equipment polices traffic entering a computer network, hackers who control it can monitor, change or misdirect communications or allow additional unauthorized access. Cisco previously said the group involved behaved as if it were backed by a national government.

Secret service thwarts foreign plot

The secret service discovered a network of gsm servers with 100k active sim cards dispersed across new York City which were being used by a foreign government to send death threats to top US officials.
I can guarantee you that Russia or china are taking advantage of the recent violence in the US and spreading conspiracy theories and such to cause more unrest. They don't care about anyone's political affiliation.

US uncovers 100,000 SIM cards that could have “shut down” NYC cell network

The US Secret Service announced this morning that it has located and seized a cache of telecom devices large enough to "shut down the cellular network in New York City." And it believes a nation-state is responsible.

According to the agency, "more than 300 co-located SIM servers and 100,000 SIM cards" were discovered at multiple locations within the New York City area. Photos of the seized gear show what appear to be "SIM boxes" bristling with antennas and stuffed with SIM cards, then stacked on six-shelf racks. (SIM boxes are often used for fraud.) One photo even shows neatly stacked towers of punched-out SIM card packaging, suggesting that whoever assembled the system invested some quality time in just getting the whole thing set up.

The gear was identified as part of a Secret Service investigation into "anonymous telephonic threats" made against several high-ranking US government officials, but the setup seems designed for something larger than just making a few threats. The Secret Service believes that the system could have been capable of activities like "disabling cell phone towers, enabling denial of services attacks, and facilitating anonymous, encrypted communication between potential threat actors and criminal enterprises."

Turns out left wing shooter Joshua Jahn was trying to kill ICE agents, as evident by his hand written notes and extensive research in tracking the movements of ICE agents. His only record of voting is in the democrat primary in 2020.
Kinda ironic that he decided to ultimately shoot at an ICE facility with around 10k immigrants and maybe 100 ICE agents and only hit immigrants.

What we know about Dallas ICE sniper suspect Joshua Jahn
Jahn, 29, allegedly opened fire from above at the sally port, authorities said.

The man accused of opening fire at a Dallas Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office on Wednesday, killing one detainee and wounding two others, has been identified as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn, according to officials.

Jahn, a U.S. citizen from Fairview, Texas, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

He "very likely" acted alone and "indicated he did not expect to survive the attack," officials said during a press conference on Thursday.

Here's what we know about the suspect.

The weapon allegedly used in the attack
Jahn used an 8 mm bolt-action rifle in the shooting, officials said during a press conference on Thursday.

The suspect had purchased the weapon legally in August, according to Joe Rothrock, the special agent in charge of the Dallas FBI field office.

Suspect allegedly left behind note about ICE
FBI Director Kash Patel posted that Jahn allegedly left a handwritten note that read, "Hopefully this will give ICE agents real terror, to think, 'is there a sniper with AP rounds on that roof?" -- referring to armor-piercing bullets.

Patel also said "further accumulated evidence to this point indicates a high degree of pre-attack planning," with the suspect allegedly downloading a document titled "Dallas County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management" that contained a "list of DHS facilities."

Free speech isn't the "ultimate right" anymore, Republican Senator claims

No.1439910 View ViewReplyLast 50OriginalReport
https://www.newsweek.com/republican-senator-says-first-amendment-shouldnt-ultimate-right-2132666
Senator Cynthia Lummis, a Wyoming Republican, told Semafor that the First Amendment, which protects free speech, should no longer be considered the "ultimate right" in America.

Newsweek has reached out to Senator Lummis' press team for comment via email on Friday.

Why It Matters

Lummis' comments come shortly after Jimmy Kimmel's late-night television show was indefinitely suspended over his remarks about Charlie Kirk and the man now charged with his murder. The backlash over Kimmel's comments comes at a moment when America is deeply polarized over free speech.

Kirk's assassination on September 10 has become a major flash point. Supporters hailed him as a leading conservative voice for young voters and his public killing has fueled a broader fight over free speech, with tributes noting his platform to openly debate and others being terminated from their work due to comments about Kirk.

Trump called out the Biden administration in January for having "trampled free speech rights" through censorship, issuing a statement on securing the "right of the American people to engage in constitutionally protected speech." However, over the past few months, First Amendment free-speech protections have been under scrutiny, as the Trump administration has moved to restrict campus speech, review green card applicants' social media, and now, engage with reactions to Kirk's death.

What To Know

ABC suspended Kimmel on Wednesday night amid pressure from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), a move critics call censorship and Kirk supporters' praise.

The definition of free speech has come under scrutiny in the Trump administration, with Attorney General Pam Bondi saying earlier this week that "there's free speech and then there's hate speech," and pledging to legally target those who cross the boundary.

US Government pledges to bail out the corruption-ridden country of Argentina

No.1441059 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/us-treasury-chief-us-ready-support-argentina-leaders-meet-tuesday-2025-09-22/
WASHINGTON, Sept 22 (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Monday said that "all options" were on the table for stabilizing Argentina, including swap lines and direct currency purchases, while underscoring President Donald Trump's confidence in Argentine President Javier Milei and his economic team.

Bessent told reporters any U.S. action would be "large and forceful," but said no steps would be taken until after he and Trump meet with Milei in New York on Tuesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

Asked if Washington could act immediately afterwards, Bessent said: "We'll see where the markets are and what the level of outflows are - or maybe the outflows turn into inflows - but no one should doubt the resolve of this administration, or my resolve."

Bessent refused to be drawn on what specific steps the U.S. might take, but said, "I can tell you that it will be large and forceful."

Argentine financial assets rallied on Monday on the news, with U.S.-traded stocks up over 10% and the peso strengthening, after sharp drops in recent weeks that included international bonds declining more than 20% for the year through Friday.

Markets have been roiled by corruption allegations inside Milei's circle and a larger-than-expected loss in a local election in Buenos Aires, reflecting growing frustration with austerity measures and triggering investor concern over Milei's ability to continue to reshape the economy, with October midterm elections on the horizon.

Bessent, a former hedge fund executive, said he did not see a risk of financial contagion from the fallout and underlined Washington's confidence in Argentina's implementation of economic reforms. Since taking power in late 2023, Milei has had some success in taming high inflation and achieving a budget surplus.

https://apnews.com/article/tylenol-cause-autism-trump-kennedy-0847ee76eedecbd5e9baa6888b567d66

President Donald Trump on Monday used the platform of the presidency to promote unproven and in some cases discredited ties between Tylenol, vaccines and autism as his administration announced a wide-ranging effort to study the causes of the complex brain disorder.

“Don’t take Tylenol,” Trump instructed pregnant women around a dozen times during the unwieldy White House news conference, also urging mothers not to give their infants the drug, known by the generic name acetaminophen. He also fueled long-debunked claims that ingredients in vaccines or timing shots close together could contribute to rising rates of autism in the U.S., without providing any medical evidence.

The rambling announcement, which appeared to rely on existing studies rather than significant new research, comes as the Make America Healthy Again movement has been pushing for answers on the causes of autism. The diverse coalition of supporters of Health Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. includes several anti-vaccine activists who have long spread debunked claims that immunizations are responsible.

The announcement also sheds light on Trump’s own long-held fascination with autism and his trepidation about the childhood vaccine schedule, even as the president has taken pride in his work to disseminate COVID-19 vaccines during his first term.

Medical experts said Trump’s remarks were irresponsible. New York University bioethicist Art Caplan said it was “the saddest display of a lack of evidence, rumors, recycling old myths, lousy advice, outright lies, and dangerous advice I have ever witnessed by anyone in authority.”

Trump announced during the event that the Food and Drug Administration would begin notifying doctors that the use of acetaminophen “can be associated” with an increased risk of autism, but did not immediately provide justification for the new recommendation.

Charlie Kirk shooting: Suspect Tyler Robinson not cooperating with FBI; had relationship with trans roommate

Utah governor Spencer Cox confirmed Sunday that Tyler Robinson, the suspect in the Charlie Kirk assassination, is not cooperating with the FBI.

Robinson, 22, was arrested without bail for allegedly killing conservative activist and Trump ally Kirk during a speech at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.

Live-in transgender partner cooperating
Cox also confirmed that Robinson’s live-in romantic partner was a transgender and is cooperating with the investigation. The Daily Mail identified the partner as Lance Twiggs, a transgender individual transitioning from male to female. The couple shared a three-bedroom apartment in St George, Utah.

“The roommate was a romantic partner, a male transitioning to female,” Cox said, as quoted by The New York Post. “This partner has been incredibly cooperative [and] had no idea that this was happening. And, he’s working with investigators right now.”

Suspect described as ‘deeply indoctrinated’
Cox while speaking to CNN’s State of the Union described Robinson as “deeply indoctrinated in leftist ideology.” “That information comes from the people around him — his family members and friends,” he added. He also confirmed that authorities are still investigating Robinson’s motive.

DHS says ICE won’t comply with California ban on agents wearing masks

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Monday it would not follow California’s new law banning its agents from covering their faces during enforcement operations.

“To be clear: We will NOT comply with [California Gov.] Gavin Newsom’s unconstitutional mask ban,” DHS said Monday in a post on the social platform X.

DHS suggested the masks provide protection for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, who have seen a sharp rise in attacks in recent months.

“At a time that ICE law enforcement faces a 1,000% increase in assaults and their family members are being doxxed and targeted, the sitting Governor of California signed unconstitutional legislation that strips law enforcement of protections in a disgusting, diabolical fundraising and PR stunt,” DHS said in a statement.

Newsom, a possible 2028 presidential contender, signed a first-of-its-kind bill on Saturday banning ICE agents from wearing masks while operating in the state.

He said ICE agents would no longer be “hidden from accountability,” arguing masks prevent “transparency” for citizens and hinder “oversight.”

“That’s Trump’s America, but that’s not the America we’ve grown up in. And so we are pushing back,” the governor said during remarks at a local high school.

The Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration has hit California especially hard, where 27 percent of the residents are born outside the country. DHS has said 5,000 immigrants living in the U.S. illegally were arrested in Los Angeles from June to August.

Newsom’s office did not respond to an immediate request for comment.

Charlie Kirk suspect said he 'had enough of his hatred', prosecutors allege

No.1437839 View ViewReplyLast 50OriginalReport
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/ckg2r8lvjn2o
The man accused of fatally shooting Charlie Kirk confessed to killing the right-wing activist in a message to his roommate, prosecutors have alleged, as they announced seven charges against him.

Tyler Robinson, 22, left a note under a keyboard for his roommate to discover, said Utah County Attorney Jeffrey Gray. He added that the roommate was Mr Robinson's romantic partner.

According to Mr Gray, the note said: "I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I'm going to take it."

Describing the hidden note, Mr Gray said Mr Robinson had sent a text message to his roommate reading: "Drop what you're doing, look under my keyboard."

After reading the apparent confession, the roommate, who has not been named and is co-operating with investigators, replied: "What? You're joking."

Mr Gray cited further text message exchanges between Mr Robinson and his roommate, who he described as "a biological male who was transitioning genders".

In one exchange, the roommate, who has not been named, asked Mr Robinson why he had killed Kirk.

"'I had enough of his hatred,'" Mr Gray cited the messages as saying. "'Some hate can't be negotiated out.'"

Mr Robinson also allegedly wrote: "To be honest I had hoped to keep this secret till I died of old age. I am sorry to involve you."

The roommate replied: "you weren't the one who did it right????"

Mr Robinson replied: "I am, I'm sorry."

The killing of Kirk, an ally of President Donald Trump and popular conservative influencer, sparked outrage with Democrats and Republicans accusing each other of spreading hateful rhetoric.
