President Trump announced Monday after meeting with Vladimir Putin that he plans to sign an executive order to eliminate mail-in ballots and “seriously controversial” voting machines ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump leaned into his long-standing disdain for mail-in voting, saying other countries have abandoned the practice “because of the MASSIVE VOTER FRAUD ENCOUNTERED.”

“I am going to lead a movement to get rid of MAIL-IN BALLOTS, and also, while we’re at it, Highly ‘Inaccurate,’ Very Expensive, and Seriously Controversial VOTING MACHINES, which cost Ten Times more than accurate and sophisticated Watermark Paper, which is faster, and leaves NO DOUBT, at the end of the evening, as to who WON, and who LOST, the Election,” Trump wrote in his post.

Trump seemed unaware that no presidential election has ever been completely counted in election night.

“WE WILL BEGIN THIS EFFORT, WHICH WILL BE STRONGLY OPPOSED BY THE DEMOCRATS BECAUSE THEY CHEAT AT LEVELS NEVER SEEN BEFORE, by signing an EXECUTIVE ORDER to help bring HONESTY to the 2026 Midterm Elections,” he added.

Trump for years has pushed unproven claims about widespread voter fraud involving mail-in ballots. He repeatedly described his 2020 election defeat as “rigged,” pointing to expanded mail-in balloting that was allowed during the coronavirus pandemic.

Countries worked beyond Thursday’s deadline into the night and Friday morning, but remained deadlocked on the issue that has dogged talks since they were launched, amid fervent optimism, in 2022: whether to reduce exponential growth of plastic production and place global, legally binding controls on toxic chemicals used to make plastics.

Over the first several months of his freshman term in Washington, Representative Rob Bresnahan Jr., Republican of Pennsylvania, became one of the most active stock traders in Congress, despite having campaigned for his seat on a promise to end stock trading by lawmakers on Capitol Hill.
Now Mr. Bresnahan’s trading is attracting more scrutiny after he made several transactions that appeared to benefit from the consequences of his own votes on the House floor.
Democrats are working to weaponize Mr. Bresnahan’s trades against him as they plot a campaign to oust him in next year’s midterm elections, and some Republicans privately concede that the issue could hurt him in his highly competitive district as they attempt to hold onto their slim House majority.
It is not just the striking number of trades that is dogging Mr. Bresnahan, a wealthy former chief executive of an electrical contracting company who was a top G.O.P. recruit. As of Thursday, he had made 626 stock trades since taking office, according to Capitol Trades, a site that monitors the stock market activity of lawmakers. That number made him the second-most-active trader this Congress.
It is also the possibility — or at least the appearance of one — that he could be benefiting financially from votes he made in Congress in favor of elements of President Trump’s domestic policy agenda that could end up harming his constituents.

The Department of Defense claimed on social media that its recruitment of women into the armed forces is going great. The problem, however, is that when they bragged about it in an interview, artificial intelligence photos were used.

AI-generated images were part of an effort to "make it seem like the government’s recruitment efforts are actually working," The New Republic reported Friday.

When President Donald Trump took office this year, the United States already commanded the largest immigrant detention system in the world with a capacity of close to 50,000 migrants. Right away, his administration set a goal of doubling it.

An internal planning road map obtained by The Washington Post shows for the first time exactly how immigration authorities plan to reach that goal, including by opening or expanding 125 facilities this year. By January, ICE will have the capacity to hold more than 107,000 people, internal agency documents show.

White House officials and attorneys for Washington DC have agreed to scale back the Trump administration’s takeover of the city’s police department.

Under an agreement announced early Friday evening, the US capital city’s Metropolitan police department will remain under the control of its chief, Pamela Smith, instead of Terry Cole, the top administrator for the Drug and Enforcement Administration (DEA), according to reports.

A revised directive Bondi issued late on Friday referred to Cole instead as her “designee” for purposes of directing the DC mayor “to provide such services of the Metropolitan Police Department as the attorney general deems necessary and appropriate”.

Those services, according to Bondi’s two-page order, would include assisting federal immigration enforcement, contrary to DC “sanctuary city” policies constraining metropolitan police department action on immigration.

Friday’s pact would also allow the Trump administration to use Metropolitan police department officers for federal purposes in emergencies.

It comes after Washington DC sought an emergency restraining order on Friday against Donald Trump’s takeover of its police department, dubbing it a “hostile takeover” of law enforcement in the nation’s capital. US district judge Ana C Reyes had signaled that she would issue a temporary restraining order scaling back the Trump White House’s takeover of DC’s metropolitan police if the administration did not alter the arrangement by Friday evening.

Reyes, during oral arguments on Friday, expressed skepticism that the Trump administration has legal authority to run the city’s police force or that Cole could effectively take charge of the department as its chief.

New Orleans mayor indicted on federal corruption charges

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell (D) was indicted on federal charges Friday after an alleged affair with a local police officer.

Cantrell, the city’s first female mayor, is accused of engaging in a romantic relationship with Jeffrey Paul Vappie II, a police officer in the executive protection unit.

Court documents allege she orchestrated out-of-state trips to maximize their opportunities to engage in “personal activities” that cost the city of New Orleans more than $70,000 in addition to travel expenses for Cantrell.

Prosecutors say both Cantrell and Vappie were warned about misconduct in 2022.

“Public officials should be in their jobs to serve the public and not themselves. To do otherwise is a breach of the trust that undermines the public’s faith and trust in their own government,” acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana Michael Simpson said at a Friday press conference.

The Democratic mayor is in her final term as the city’s leader and is now charged with making false statements and false declarations before a grand jury, conspiracy to obstruct justice and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Nobody is surprised.
