Bad news for Trump

No.1424417 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
More bad news on the economy. Turns out the BLS was cooking numbers the entire time during Biden's presidency. You thought it was bad they revised Trump's numbers down by 50k? They just revised down March 2024-march 2025 by nearly 1 million.
That means they over reported bidens employment gains by nearly a million leading up the the election.
This is the largest correction ever since the BLS started tracking these numbers

Donald Trump Gets Even More Bad News on US Economy

Analysts expect U.S. jobs figures to face further revisions this year, after downward adjustments to recent data angered President Donald Trump and led him to the fire the country's top employment statistician.

Analysts expect U.S. jobs figures to face further revisions this year, after downward adjustments to recent data angered President Donald Trump and led him to the fire the country's top employment statistician.

According to a note released by Goldman Sachs over the weekend, preliminary revision estimates set to be published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in September will reveal a 550,000-950,000 downward revision for the 12-month period through March 2025.

Although the period subject to such change overlaps with more of Joe Biden's presidency than Trump's second term, these substantial revisions will be viewed against the backdrop of the White House's recent criticism of the agency.

Following a weak jobs reading on Friday, and substantial revisions to earlier data, the president accused the BLS commissioner, Erika McEntarfer, of rigging data to reflect poorly on his administration and fired her from her post.

This move has been roundly criticized by officials and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, who believe it will undermine the credibility and independence of the BLS, but the White House has pointed to other significant revisions as evidence of persistent inaccurate data-gathering by the agency.

Trump goes after states for letting boys play girls sports

No.1423208 View ViewReplyLast 50OriginalReport
In case anybody missed the last thread, the leftists of /news/ conceded that biological males cannot transform into biological females (their only argument was demanding that we disprove evidence that doesn't even exist).
They also conceded that there are not nearly as many examples of a woman failing at women's sports and then succeeding at men's sports as there are the examples of the reverse (their only argument was that we couldn't prove these examples *don't* exist)

So since leftists already admitted that transwomen are men, and that transwomen have a biological advantage in sports, there is no need for anybody to waste time debating those issues ITT. Any comment to the contrary should be ignored as it is an obvious troll.

The Trump Admin Cracks Down on These States for Defying Title IX

The US Department of Education (ED) will crack down on Virginia and Oregon for defying President Donald Trump’s executive order protecting women’s sports from transgender athletes.

The ED’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) opened an investigation into the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) after it received a complaint from the America First Policy Institute (AFPI) that males were competing in women’s sports, specifically at the high school level.

Republicans slam Trump’s firing of Bureau of Labor Statistics chief

No.1424008 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/aug/02/republicans-trump-bureau-of-labor-statistics-commissioner

Senior Republican lawmakers are condemning the decision of their party leader, Donald Trump, to fire the leading US labor market statistician after a report that showed the national economy added just 73,000 jobs – far fewer than expected – in July.

The disappointing figures – coupled with a downward revision of the two previous months amounting to 258,000 fewer jobs and data showing that economic output and consumer spending slowed in the first half of the year – point to an overall economic deterioration in the US.

Trump defended his decision to fire US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) commissioner Erika McEntarfer. Without evidence to back his claims, the president wrote on social media that were numbers were “RIGGED in order to make the Republicans, and ME, look bad” and the US economy was, in fact, “BOOMING” on his watch.

But the firing of McEntarfer, who had been confirmed to her role in January 2024 during Joe Biden’s presidency, has alarmed members of Trump’s own party.

“If the president is firing the statistician because he doesn’t like the numbers but they are accurate, then that’s a problem,” said Wyoming Republican senator Cynthia Lummis. “It’s not the statistician’s fault if the numbers are accurate and that they’re not what the president had hoped for.”

Lummis added that if the numbers are unreliable, the public should be told – but firing McEntarfer was “kind of impetuous”.

North Carolina senator Thom Tillis, a Republican, said: “If she was just fired because the president or whoever decided to fire the director just … because they didn’t like the numbers, they ought to grow up.”

Kentucky senator Rand Paul, another Republican, questioned whether McEntarfer’s firing was an effective way of improving the numbers.

Texas panel advances gerrymandered congressional map that could take 5 Democratic seats

No.1424003 View ViewReplyLast 50OriginalReport
https://www.cnn.com/2025/08/02/politics/texas-congressional-map-advanced

A Texas House panel on Saturday advanced a new congressional map as state Republicans power ahead with a strategy backed by President Donald Trump to help the GOP maintain the US House majority in the 2026 midterms.

The map, unveiled earlier this week, attempts to make five Democratic congressional seats more favorable to Republicans. Texas Republicans argue the move is necessary over concerns that the current maps are unconstitutional and racially gerrymandered. Democrats have said it would suppress the votes of people of color.

The Texas House redistricting committee voted along party lines Saturday to approve the map, setting up a full House vote.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Kendall Scudder said Saturday the party will file a lawsuit if the map passes, adding that state Republicans are “silencing voters on behalf of Donald Trump.”

“Democrats must fight this Trump power grab through any means necessary, and blue states across the country should use this as a signal flare to start carving up their own states and make these authoritarian wannabe Republican lawmakers regret ever opening up this redistricting discussion in the first place,” Scudder said in a statement.

Democratic governors in states like California have already warned they will attempt the same tactics to help their party win more seats, in what one US House Democrat described to CNN as a “redistricting arms race.”

Appeals court largely keeps restrictions on immigration raids in Los Angeles area

No.1424045 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/appeals-court-decision-keeps-restrictions-immigration-raids-los-angeles-area-trump/

An appeals court late Friday mostly kept in place restrictions on "roving" immigration raids in the Los Angeles area, agreeing with a lower court judge who found that sweeps conducted by the Trump administration in Southern California appeared to have been predicated on people's race and other factors, like speaking Spanish.

A panel of judges at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit largely denied a Trump administration request to suspend the lower court ruling, which required federal immigration officials to have reasonable suspicion that someone is in the country illegally before detaining them.

The immigration raids at the center of the legal battle triggered massive protests in the Los Angeles area in June, as well as widespread fears among the region's large Latino community. While most demonstrations were peaceful, instances of violence led President Trump to deploy National Guard troops and U.S. Marines to Los Angeles with orders to protect federal buildings and the immigration agents enforcing his far-reaching crackdown on illegal immigration. Most of them have since been demobilized.

Those high-profile immigration arrests in California have continued, led by Customs and Border Protection agents who have been assigned to help Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers with furthering the Trump administration's mass deportation campaign — in some cases, far away from the U.S.-Mexico border.

Beyond requiring CBP and ICE to have reasonable suspicion before detaining someone, the July order from U.S. District Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong prohibited federal agents from basing arrests on people's race or ethnicity, the fact that they speak Spanish or have an accent, their presence in a location, or their occupation.

For Trump, Domestic Adversaries Are Not Just Wrong, They Are ‘Evil’

No.1420563 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/16/us/politics/trump-political-enemies-evil.html

When the Pentagon decided not to send anyone to this week’s Aspen Security Forum, an annual bipartisan gathering of national security professionals in the Colorado mountains, President Trump’s appointees explained that they would not participate in discussions with people who subscribe to the “evil of globalism.”

After all the evils that the U.S. military has fought, this may be the first time in its history that it has put globalization on its enemies list. But it is simply following the example of Mr. Trump. Last week, he denounced a reporter as a “very evil person” for asking a question he did not like. This week, he declared that Democrats are “an evil group of people.”

“Evil” is a word getting a lot of airtime in the second Trump term. It is not enough anymore to dislike a journalistic inquiry or disagree with an opposing philosophy. Anyone viewed as critical of the president or insufficiently deferential is wicked. The Trump administration’s efforts to achieve its policy goals are not just an exercise in governance but a holy mission against forces of darkness.

The characterization seeds the ground to justify all sorts of actions that would normally be considered extreme or out of bounds. If Mr. Trump’s adversaries are not just rivals but villains, then he can rationalize going further than any president has in modern times. Last month, he told a cabinet secretary to consider throwing her Biden administration predecessor in prison because of his immigration policy. Last weekend, Mr. Trump said he might strip Rosie O’Donnell’s citizenship for the crime of criticizing him.

German air force begins Gaza aid drops

No.1423780 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
https://p.dw.com/p/4yMfK
The German military, the Bundeswehr, has begun airdropping humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, the Defense Ministry in Berlin confirmed on Friday.

German air force transport planes have reportedly dropped 34 pallets with a combined total of 14 tons of food and medical supplies over the besieged Palestinian enclave.

According to the United Nations, Gaza needs some 62,000 tons of aid a month in order for inhabitants to survive.

Amid mounting international criticism of its conduct in Gaza, which has resulted in increasing reports of mass starvation, Israel has been allowing aid to enter the territory via land and air since Sunday.

Regional neighbors Jordan and the United Arab Emirates have been leading the airdrops, with Germany also contributing two aircraft operating from a Jordanian base.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) nevertheless cautioned that airdrops only have a limited effect. "Food and medication is lacking in Gaza," he said. "For many people, including for many children, it's about sheer survival."

Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU), who is currently visiting the region, also warned that airdrops cannot replace land deliveries when it comes to ensuring that vital aid reaches those who need it most.

"That's why we're calling urgently on the Israeli government to allow secure access [to Gaza] for the United Nations and international aid organizations and to facilitate secure distribution [of aid]," he said.

Trump Announces US-EU Trade Framework Before Tariff Deadline

President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have reached a comprehensive trade framework on Sunday following intensive negotiations at Trump's Turnberry golf course in Scotland.

The agreement averts 30 percent tariffs on European imports that were set to take effect on August 1, with the European Union (EU) committing to purchase $750 billion in American energy and invest an additional $600 billion in the United States.

Newsweek has reached out to the White House via email on Sunday for comment.

This framework prevents what could have been a devastating trade war between the world's two largest economic blocs. The U.S. and EU combined represent the world's largest trade volume, encompassing hundreds of millions of people and trillions of dollars in commerce.

Without this agreement, American consumers would have faced higher prices on everything from French cheese and Italian leather goods to German electronics and Spanish pharmaceuticals. The EU had prepared retaliatory tariffs on hundreds of American products, including beef, auto parts, beer, and Boeing airplanes, which could have sent shock waves through global economies.

The negotiations represented a make-or-break moment in escalating trade tensions. Trump had threatened to increase tariffs from the current 10 percent universal baseline to 30 percent on August 1, citing what he characterized as "a very one-sided transaction, very unfair to the United States."

The president previously said that 15 percent represents the lowest across-the-board tariff rate the U.S. would accept, pointing to a recent agreement with Japan that set many tariff rates at that level.
