US economy set to collapse because of Trump's tariffs

No.1420032 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2025/07/12/economy-slow-second-half-2025/84544138007/
The cloud of uncertainty that has hovered over the U.S. economy the first half of 2025 threatens to unleash a thunderstorm that dampens growth in the second half as President Donald Trump’s higher tariffs hit consumers and his immigration crackdown rocks the job market.

While growth was already poised to slow, Trump on July 10 increased the risks of a more pronounced pullback by announcing plans to raise the tariff rate on many Canadian imports from 25% to 35% and impose a blanket 15% to 20% duty on most other countries, up from 10%. On July 12, the tariff threats ramped up again with Trump announcing 30% tariffs on all imports from Mexico and the European Union.

In the spring, Trump announced a 90-day pause on high double-digit reciprocal tariffs for China and many other countries, easing recession fears and reversing a stock market sell-off. This week, White House officials extended the reprieve to August 1 to provide more time for negotiations.

But in recent days, Trump again has ratcheted up his trade threats, unveiling plans for a 50% tariff on imported copper, 50% on all shipments from Brazil and high fees for 14 countries that don’t reach a deal with the U.S. by August 1. Already in effect: a 50% levy on metals, 25% on cars and 30% on China, in addition to the blanket 10% charge that appears poised to rise sharply.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled nearly 280 points July 11 on Trump's latest tariff threats.

“Risks are intensifying that we may see much higher tariff rates, with consequent effects on inflation and growth,” said Jonathan Millar, senior U.S. economist at Barclays.

Just 42% of CEOs of small and midsize companies plan to add to their staffs in the next year, lowest on record dating to 2003, according to a June survey by Vistage, a CEO networking group.

‘Love Island’ revives conversation about racial bias and misogynoir in dating

https://apnews.com/article/love-island-racial-bias-misogynoir-ppg-bba46b637a51c4f54652b39ce3fc3120

It used to be that dating was as simple as deciding between dinner, a trip to the movies or an arcade. Now, understanding the dating scene has become intermingled with smartphones, matchmaking apps and one’s ability to navigate thorny social issues like racial preference in a mate.

“Love Island,” a widely popular international reality television franchise, is emblematic of the complexities of modern dating. It has also sparked heated discussions among fans about the desirability of Black women and darker-complexioned people both on and off air.

Coup in the Whitehouse: Autopen Edition

> Thread theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvziPPpryv0

https://nypost.com/2025/07/14/us-news/biden-defends-controversial-autopen-use-for-mass-clemency-decisions-in-nyt-interview/

> Former President Joe Biden has acknowledged in a stunning new interview that he didn’t agree to the name of every person who received one of the 46th president’s sweeping pardons — with emails indicating that then-White House chief of staff Jeff Zients approved the use of the notorious White House autopen.

> The 46th president insisted in a phone interview with the New York Times last week that “I made every decision” about clemencies issued during his term before admitting that he had his staff replicate his signature because “we’re talking about a lot of people.”

> Biden’s team used an autopen on 25 warrants for pardons and commutations in December and January of last year, but two of those warrants granted clemency to thousands of people.

> On Dec. 12, Biden commuted roughly 1,500 sentences and outright pardoned 39 more. Three days before he left office, the president commuted the sentence of nearly 2,500 federal inmates convicted of crack cocaine offenses.

> According to the Times, Biden approved what standards would be used to determine which convicts would qualify for a pardon or commutation, while his underlings sorted out the specifics.

> In cases where changes were made to the list of inmates, staffers waited until a final version of the clemency roster was produced, then ran it through the autopen rather than ask Biden to keep signing successive versions.

> President Trump has cast doubt on the legitimacy of the documents Biden signed via autopen — which has been used since at least the Truman administration to reproduce the president’s signature.

> “I understand why Trump would think that,” the former president told the Times, “because obviously, I guess, he doesn’t focus much. Anyway, so — yes, I made every decision.”

A new partnership between the DoD and MP Materials promises to wrest away from China it's monopoly on rare earth minerals.

US Moves To Loosen China's Grip on Rare Earth Minerals

AU.S. company has announced a $400 million deal with the United States Department of Defense amid soaring demand for domestically mined rare earth elements that are critical for both civilian and military technologies.

The MP Materials deal is being hailed as a major move toward building out the U.S. mine-to-magnet supply chain and cutting the country's reliance on geopolitical rival China.

Newsweek reached out to the Pentagon and MP Materials via request for comment outside of office hours.

Why It Matters
China supplies 70 percent of the rare earths imported by the U.S. and controls about 85 percent of the world's refining capacity—a virtual stranglehold on production of the high-performance magnets used in everything from electric vehicles to missiles.

This dependency is viewed in Washington as an Achilles' heel. That concern has driven the administration of President Donald Trump to seek out new deals—such as one signed with Ukraine in May.

What To Know
MP Materials Corp announced Thursday it had entered a public-private partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense that would, in its words, "dramatically accelerate the build-out of an end-to-end U.S. rare earth magnet supply chain and reduce foreign dependency."

Under the deal, the Pentagon will invest $400 million for a 15 percent ownership stake in the Las Vegas-headquartered firm.

Netanyahu Nominates Trump for Nobel Prize, Cites Hope for Middle East Peace

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday night that he's nominating President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The honor was "well-deserved," Netanyahu told Trump.

Why It Matters
Trump has long called himself a master peacemaker and made clear his desire for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Last month, a senior Ukrainian lawmaker who nominated President Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize withdrew it, as peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow slip under the radar and the president keeps his sights fixed on the Middle East.

Following Trump's decision to intervene in Israel's war with Iran by launching strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, the U.S. president and Israeli prime minister appear more aligned than ever. Trump also recently made public calls to cancel Netanyahu's Israeli corruption trial.

What to Know
The two leaders, joined by their senior aides, held a dinner in the White House Blue Room to commemorate the operation and discuss advancing a proposed 60-day ceasefire aimed at pausing the conflict in Gaza.

"He's forging peace as we speak in one country, in one region after the other. So, I want to present to you the letter I sent to the Nobel Prize Committee. It's nominating you for the Nobel Peace Prize. It's well-deserved, and you should get it."

Trump has long called himself a master peacemaker and made clear his desire for the Nobel Prize.

Trump, speaking in front of reporters, said the nomination was news to him.

"Coming from you, this is very meaningful," he told the Israeli leader.

FBI Director Kash Patel ALSO Considering Resigning If Pam Bondi Keeps Her Job, Per Report

https://www.mediaite.com/politics/just-in-fbi-director-kash-patel-also-considering-resigning-if-pam-bondi-keeps-her-job-per-report/

FBI Director Kash Patel may reportedly join Deputy Director Dan Bongino in resigning if Attorney General Pam Bondi keeps her job.

According to a Friday report from Axios, Bongino and Bondi clashed over President Donald Trump’s administration’s handling of the case of convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. The Justice Department, led by Bondi, released a joint memo with the FBI announcing that the rumored “Epstein list” naming his associates never really existed. That conclusion contradicted Bondi’s previous claims that the supposed list was on her desk.

As a result, Bongino and Bondi reportedly got into it. That led to Bongino taking off from work on Friday “in protest.” The deputy director, according to The Daily Wire’s Mary Margaret Olohan, had also made it clear that he would be leaving his post if Bondi kept hers.

Not long after that reporting, Olohan added that Patel has joined Bongino in his stand against Bondi.

“Source close to DOJ says Kash Patel also wants Pam Bondi gone, and that he’d consider leaving if Bongino leaves,” Olohan said. “Also that there are more frustrations with other documents Bondi hasn’t released.”

FBI offering $50,000 reward for info on protester who appeared to ‘fire a gun’ at ICE agents

Armed demonstrator sought after immigration raid on California ‘marijuana facility’ sparks angry clashes

The FBI has offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of a person who appeared to fire a gun at federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in southern California on Thursday.

The alleged shooting took place on Laguna Road in Camarillo, Ventura County, where agents were executing a warrant at what the Department of Homeland Security described as a “marijuana facility” and met with resistance from local activists and workers blocking their path, leading to several arrests.

U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli, who heads the Central District of California office, announced the FBI reward on social media and shared a picture and video of the suspect, who is seen wearing a black T-shirt, pants, and a white surgical mask.

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) also posted about the incident on X, warning: “Make no mistake: anyone who targets our agents will face the full force of federal prosecution.”

According to CBS News, agents en route to the farm in Camarillo encountered the protesters blocking their way, ordered them to back up and fired tear gas and non-lethal rounds when they stood their ground, beginning what proved to be a four-hour-long standoff that also saw the demonstrators smash vehicles’ windows with pebbles and stones.

Trump demands more concessions as EU holds off on US tariff countermeasures

White House adviser: Trump wants better trade deal offers
Germany's Merz to work with von der Leyen, Macron on solution

BRUSSELS, July 13 (Reuters) - The European Union said on Sunday it would extend its suspension of countermeasures to U.S. tariffs until early August and continue to press for a negotiated settlement as U.S. President Donald Trump's administration demanded more concessions from trading partners.
Trump said on Saturday he would impose a 30% tariff on most imports from the EU and Mexico from August 1, adding to similar warnings for other countries and leaving them less than three weeks to hammer out framework deals that could lower the threatened tariff rate.

White House Economic Adviser Kevin Hassett said on Sunday that countries' trade deal offers so far have not satisfied Trump and "the tariffs are real" without improvements.
"The president thinks that deals need to be better," Hassett told ABC's This Week program. "And to basically put a line in the sand, he sent these letters out to folks, and we'll see how it works out."
Ursula von der Leyen, head of the EU's executive Commission which handles trade policy for the 27 member states, said the bloc would maintain its two-track approach: keep talking and prepare retaliatory measures.
"We have always been very clear that we prefer a negotiated solution. This remains the case, and we will use the time that we have now," von der Leyen told a press conference, adding that the bloc would extend its halt on countermeasures until August.
