President Donald Trump’s failed push to install Ed Martin as U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia is a telling sign that his second-term power streak on Capitol Hill is beginning to slip, Mother Jones’ Dan Friedman wrote Thursday.

Martin’s nomination collapsed after Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) publicly opposed it, citing Martin’s support for January 6 rioters. The backlash forced Trump to back down and pick Fox News host Jeanine Pirro, a MAGA favorite, to fill Martin's role on an interim basis.

But the move signaled more than just a personnel shift, according to Friedman’s analysis. The “derailed nomination shows Donald Trump’s power is waning,” he said.

“With Martin, Trump tried to force GOP senators to confirm an unqualified bumbler and extremist just because he is Trump’s ‘favorite US Attorney,’” Friedman told readers. “That didn’t work. That makes Martin’s derailed nomination a defeat for Trump too.”

While Martin, who Friedman called an “unqualified extremist,” may be a minor figure in the MAGAverse, “his defeat is a significant sign that Trump’s power to make the government accept his lies is ebbing,” he concluded.

“The rejection of Martin’s nomination is also a sign of the limits of Trump’s effort to rewrite the history of January 6 and the lies that led to it,” Friedman added, noting that Martin was a staunch 2020 election denier who was deeply involved in the Stop the Steal organizing.

Since she was first elected in 1990 as Washington, DC’s nonvoting delegate, Eleanor Holmes Norton (D) has fiercely defended the civil service in Congress. Nearly a quarter of her constituents work for the federal government. So after the second inauguration of President Donald Trump, as Elon Musk’s US DOGE Service targeted agency after agency with layoffs, smears, and all manner of corner-cutting, Norton was a logical person to host a March town hall on this unprecedented attack.

The event, promotional materials said, would “give Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton the chance to speak directly with the District of Columbia federal workforce and provide resources.” The promise of a real dialogue with the congresswoman, however, proved to be a bit of hype.

Conducted over the phone, the event had plenty of town, but no hall. As the host, Norton was spectral at best. She read some opening remarks, but when participants directed questions at her, union reps or a democracy activist provided most of the answers. “Congresswoman, I’d be happy to jump in” was a typical intervention during her many unexplained silences.

“Congresswoman? Are you still with us?” the moderator asked after fifteen seconds had passed. Then an additional ten seconds went by before Norton reappeared with a 59-word response, of which 13 were “uh.”

Trump’s second-term ethics agreement is such a permissive document that it is challenging to find a way to violate it. But three months into his presidency, Trump has found a way.

To develop the project, the Trump Organization is partnering with Dar Global, a Saudi Arabian company, and Qatari Diar, a company owned by the Qatari government. New Jersey has the best education system in the nation, according to a newly-released ranking by U.S. News and World Report.

The annual ranking judges states on K-12 test scores, colleges, graduation rates, student debt and more. Last year, New Jersey ranked No. 4 in the nation for overall education.

This year, New Jersey secured the top spot by scoring near the top in nearly every category for K-12 schools and preschools.

“This is a much-deserved recognition of the entire New Jersey school community – thank you to all the educators and school leaders for the work you do day-in-day-out to make achievements like this possible,” said Department of Education Commissioner Kevin Dehmer.

New Jersey “ranked in the top 5 in every single pre-K-12 metric, and ranked #1 in SAT/ACT pass rate and preschool enrollment rate,” said Jaclyn Jeffrey-Wilensky, U.S. News’ senior data editor.

Florida was No. 2 in the overall education ranking, scoring highly in the higher education subcategory because of its low tuition and high college graduation rate. (See the full U.S. News top 10 list below.)

Gov. Phil Murphy said he was “thrilled” the state’s education system was recognized.

BRUSSELS — After years of reducing its reliance on Russian gas, the European Union is moving to turn off the taps completely within the next two years.

The European Commission (EC) on May 6 presented a detailed roadmap to fully sever the European Union’s energy dependence on Russia by 2027.

The plan has been described as the bloc’s most comprehensive effort yet to end imports of Russian gas, oil, and nuclear fuel, a dependency critics argue has long compromised EU sovereignty and funded the Kremlin’s war machine in Ukraine.

"Energy that comes to our continent should not pay for a war of aggression against Ukraine," EU Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen said on May 6, adding: "We owe this to our citizens, to our companies and to our brave Ukrainian friends."

The EU’s reliance on Russian energy has dropped significantly since 2021, when Russian gas accounted for 45% of imports. That figure now stands at 19%, according to a statement from the EC.

Russian coal has already been banned and oil imports have fallen from 27% in early 2022 to just 3%. Yet, as the Commission admits, 2024 saw a modest rebound in Russian gas imports, prompting urgent calls for a coordinated phase-out.
