The Justice Department has reached a settlement in principle with the family of Ashli Babbitt, the Jan. 6 rioter who was fatally shot by a police officer during the 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. DOJ lawyers and Babbitt’s estate revealed the agreement during a court hearing Friday. The amount of the settlement in the wrongful death lawsuit was not disclosed.

The $30 million lawsuit, brought by Babbitt’s family and the conservative group Judicial Watch, alleges that U.S. Capitol Police Lt. Michael Byrd was negligent when he fired his gun as Babbitt and other rioters tried to break through doors leading toward the lobby of the House chamber on Jan. 6, 2021. The lawsuit accused Byrd of ambushing Babbitt and claimed he was not in uniform, did not identify himself as an officer, and did not provide “any warnings or commands” before shooting.

‘Ashli Babbitt was a really good person who was a big MAGA fan, Trump fan, and she was innocently standing there,’ Trump said recently.

Following an internal investigation, both the Justice Department and the Capitol Police cleared Byrd of any wrongdoing. The DOJ said investigators had examined video footage, physical evidence from the scene, autopsy results and statements from officers and witnesses.

A high school teacher who posted a series of threats against President Donald Trump and members of his cabinet is now under investigation, Maine officials said.

“The Secret Service has the perfect opportunity, if they choose to step up and take it,” the Waterville Senior High School teacher — whom McClatchy News is not naming because there are no charges against her — said in an April 29 Facebook post. “Take out every single person who supports Trump’s illegal, immoral, unconstitutional acts … If I had the skill set required, I would take them out myself.”

She later clarified in a separate post that she did not mean Republicans should die, but “those in the room with Trump … need to be held accountable.”

The woman, who said she’d been a public school teacher for 15 years, said she knew she risked losing her job with the posts, according to an April 30 post.

“I believe Trump and every sycophant he has surrounded himself with … needs to die,” she wrote in that post.

McClatchy News reached out to Waterville Public Schools Superintendent Peter Hallen May 1 but did not receive a response.

Here’s a conspiracy theory for you: Mainstream political parties of the center-right and center-left, across a wide range of self-described democratic nations, were in big trouble as we neared the the 2020s. They were beset on all sides by anti-immigrant sentiment, worsening economic inequality and widespread mistrust in government. The ultra-fascist far right was on the rise; to a lesser extent, so was the socialist left.

But they had a plan! Install a vicious, undisciplined sociopath as would-be dictator of the United States, unleashing a worldwide reaction of anti-American loathing.
