Trump added to Mount Rushmore!

No.1378534 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-mount-rushmore-bill-anna-paulina-luna-2022609
A bill to add a carving of President Donald Trump to Mount Rushmore has been introduced by a MAGA politician.

Florida Representative Anna Paulina Luna announced the bill Tuesday calling for Trump to be added to the South Dakota monument with the message: "Let's get carving."

Newsweek has contacted the White House and Luna for comment via email outside of regular working hours.

The proposal is the latest attempt to commemorate the Republican following his return to the White House, signaling that Trump's staunch supporters continue to show strong support for the president in his second term.

Luna, who represents Florida's 13th Congressional District, introduced a bill calling for a carving of Trump to be included on the Mount Rushmore National Memorial alongside former Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.

The bill is unlikely to receive the bipartisan support needed to pass Congress.

North Carolina Representative Addison McDowell introduced a bill last week to rename Washington Dulles International Airport after Trump.

Tennessee Representative Andy Ogles also introduced a long-shot bill to amend the Constitution to allow Trump to run for a third term.

Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor who carved the Mount Rushmore memorial, selected the four presidents because they represented the "most important events" in U.S. history, according to the National Park Service.

Trump makes moves to expand his power, sparking chaos and a possible constitutional crisis

https://apnews.com/article/trump-presidential-power-executive-congress-grants-freeze-60fa3a9fabf6328f9aa3c45ed34e2cc3

Just a little over a week into his second term, President Donald Trump took steps to maximize his power, sparking chaos and what critics contend is a constitutional crisis as he challenges the separation of powers that have defined American government for more than 200 years.

The new administration’s most provocative move came this week, as it announced it would temporarily halt federal payments to ensure they complied with Trump’s orders barring diversity programs. The technical-sounding directive had enormous immediate impact before it was blocked by a federal judge, potentially pulling trillions of dollars from police departments, domestic violence shelters, nutrition services and disaster relief programs that rely on federal grants. The administration on Wednesday rescinded the order.

Though the Republican administration denied Medicaid was affected, it acknowledged the online portal allowing states to file for reimbursement from the program was shut down for part of Tuesday in what it insisted was an error.

Legal experts noted the president is explicitly forbidden from cutting off spending for programs that Congress has approved. The U.S. Constitution grants Congress the power to appropriate money and requires the executive to pay it out. A 50-year-old law known as the Impoundment Control Act makes that explicit by prohibiting the president from halting payments on grants or other programs approved by Congress.

“The thing that prevents the president from being an absolute monarch is Congress controls the power of the purse strings,” said Josh Chafetz, a law professor at Georgetown University, adding that even a temporary freeze violates the law. “It’s what guarantees there’s a check on the presidency.”

Democrats and other critics said the move was blatantly unconstitutional.

Consumers could face price rises of 20% in 2025

No.1372988 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
Buying and supplying items including food and drink could cost businesses as much as a fifth more this year, which they will pass on to consumers, according to the international trade association, which represents 64,000 member organisations in procurement and supply chains across 150 countries.

International shipping costs have been rising in recent months as global freight companies faced a string of challenges in moving goods around the world.

Tensions in the Middle East and attacks on vessels travelling through the Red Sea by Houthi rebels prompted many major shipping firms to re-route their vessels around the Cape of Good Hope, adding cost and time to journeys.

The prospect of Trump following through on his threats to impose tariffs of 10% on global imports into the US, along with a higher 60% tariff on Chinese goods has already prompted some companies to bring forward container shipments of goods to avoid such changes.

However, pre-emptive measures such as stockpiling would only temporarily delay the impact of price rises, trade experts said, warning that any new levies could push up costs, disrupt trade flows, and spark retaliation against US exports.

Sheinbaum said Mexico will immediately reinforce its northern border with 10,000 National Guard soldiers “to prevent drug trafficking from Mexico to the United States, particularly fentanyl.”

Trump Threatens to Cut Aid to South Africa

No.1380143 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cvg9w4n6gp5o

South Africa recently passes its land expropriation bill, allowing for the government to seize land without compensation—likening back to a similar land reform bill passed in Zimbabwe years ago, which saw the government seizing farmland without compensation from whites who owned the majority.

https://nationalpost.com/news/world/zimbabwe-takes-back-land-from-blacks-who-were-given-farms-owned-by-white-settlers

In hindsight, Zimbabwe's land reforms were an utter failure, and plunged the country into economic destitution. And with this as the prime example, many fear the same events will unfold in South Africa next (which could see more devastating consequences given South Africa’s larger population to Zimbabwe’s)

https://www.politico.com/news/2025/02/02/trump-cut-aid-south-africa-00202018

In response to this, Trump took to TruthSocial to voice his disapproval of South Africa’s decision, saying it would be a violation of human rights, and threatened to cut off any future aid from the United States to South Africa in protest. In any case, South Africa seems like another powder keg that could go off in the world.

Canada announces retaliatory tariffs on long-time ally US

No.1379829 View ViewReplyLast 50OriginalReport
https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/canadas-trudeau-announces-counter-tariffs-2025-02-02/

"OTTAWA, Feb 1 (Reuters) - Canada will retaliate against President Donald Trump'snew tariffs with 25% levies on a raft of U.S. imports, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Saturday, warning Americans that Trump's actions would have real consequences for them.
As relations between the long-time allies who share the world's longest land border reach a new low, Trudeau told a news conference he was slapping tariffs on C$155 billion ($107 billion) of U.S. goods. Those on C$30 billion will take effect on Tuesday, the same day as Trump's tariffs, and duties on the remaining C$125 billion in 21 days, he said.
Trudeau's announcement came just hours after Trump ordered 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports and 10% on goods from China, risking a trade war that economists say could slow global growth and reignite inflation.
Trump said he would impose 10% tariff on all energy imports from Canada.
The Canadian leader said tariffs would include American beer, wine and bourbon, as well as fruits and fruit juices, including orange juice from Trump's home state of Florida. Canada would also target goods including clothing, sports equipment and household appliances.
Trudeau said the coming weeks would be difficult for Canadians but that Americans would also suffer from Trump's actions.
"Tariffs against Canada will put your jobs at risk, potentially shutting down American auto assembly plants and other manufacturing facilities," Trudeau said, addressing U.S. citizens during a press conference in Ottawa.
"They will raise costs for you, including food at the grocery store and gas at the pump."
Canada is considering non-tariff measures, potentially relating to critical minerals, energy procurement and other partnerships, Trudeau said."
