A federal judge in Chicago orders the release of hundreds of people arrested by ICE

https://www.wbez.org/immigration/2025/11/12/federal-judge-orders-release-hundreds-feds-deportation-midway-blitz-warrantless-arrests

Hundreds of people arrested and held in custody amid the feds’ deportation campaign in Chicago could soon be released on various conditions under a federal judge’s order Wednesday.

It’s not clear how many of the 615 people covered by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Cummings’ order remain in the country. And the judge said he doesn’t want anyone released who poses a risk to public safety. He’s giving the Justice Department a chance to identify any such person.

But Cummings ultimately said he’s trying to restore the status quo that existed before the Trump administration recently changed its interpretation of immigration law. That policy shift subjected people across the country to mandatory detention who previously would have been given a chance at a bond hearing.

Immigration advocates have said that law only applies to “noncitizens who recently arrived at a border or port of entry,” not to people who have lived in the country for an extended period of time. And more than 100 judges across the country have apparently agreed with them.

But, Cummings noted in a hearing last month, “I do not think the government has appealed,” meaning no higher court has had a chance to weigh in.

The 600 or so detainees come from a list of roughly 1,800 arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the Chicago area between June 11 and Oct. 7. Only about 750 of them remain in the country, and about 135 had final orders of removal or criminal convictions, according to Mark Fleming, a lawyer with the National Immigrant Justice Center.

> Lunatic stabs female straphanger, 27, at Chicago train station

A 27-year-old woman was stabbed in the chest by a lunatic at a Chicago train station Saturday night — nearly three months after Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska was murdered by a pocket knife-wielding madman on Charlotte’s light rail system.

The assailant was walking along the UIC-Halsted Blue Line platform near the University of Illinois Chicago around 11:14 p.m. when he pulled a large knife from his backpack, approached the straphanger sitting on a bench and plunged it into her chest, according to the Chicago Police Department.

The violent brute then ran off, heading north on South Morgan Street.

The woman sustained a laceration to the chest and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, police said.

Police are now on the hunt for the armed suspect, who was last seen wearing a pink beanie, gray hooded jacket, orange sweatshirt, light blue jeans, white shoes and carrying a gray backpack.

The vicious stabbing comes after 34-year-old career criminal Decarlos Brown Jr. allegedly fatally gutted Zarutska, 23, three times, including once in the neck, with a pocket knife in an unprovoked attack on the Lynx Blue Line train in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Aug. 22.

Brown, a homeless schizophrenic, was swiftly arrested and indicted last month for violence against a railroad carrier and mass transportation system resulting in death.

The federal charges make the disturbed felon eligible for the death penalty.

The Epstein files petition is getting its 218th signature. What happens next?

Adelita Grijalva’s swearing in on Wednesday will make her Democrats’ newest member in the US House of Representatives, but it’ll also officially set in motion lawmakers’ effort to force a vote on a measure the White House has fought for months: a bill to compel the release of the Jeffrey Epstein case files.

After her 4 p.m. swearing in, Grijalva is expected to provide the 218th – and final – signature needed on the discharge petition to force such a vote and, in turn, trigger a number of procedural steps before the House can vote on a bill compelling the files’ release.

As a refresher, a discharge petition is a critical tool at rank-and-file members’ disposal. Under the arcane procedure, if 218 members of the House – a majority of all 435 districts – sign one, they can force a floor vote in the chamber on anything — even if leadership opposes it. Such an effort rarely succeeds.

Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky has joined with Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna of California to spearhead this particular discharge petition, but while Grijalva will provide the decisive signature, the effort faces a number of hurdles — and the bill is unlikely to become law.

California revokes CDLs for illegals

No.1457609 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
After pressure from the Trump admin, California suddenly "discovers" that tens of thousands of illegal immigrants have active CDLs. They are revoking them. This comes weeks after Gavin Newsom claimed they weren't letting illegals operate commercial vehicles.

California revokes 17,000 commercial driver’s licenses for immigrants

California plans to revoke 17,000 commercial driver’s licenses given to immigrants after discovering the expiration dates went past when the drivers were legally allowed to be in the U.S., state officials said Wednesday.

The announcement follows harsh criticism from the Trump administration about California and other states granting licenses to people in the country illegally. The issue was thrust into the public’s consciousness in August, when a tractor-trailer driver not authorized to be in the U.S. made an illegal U-turn and caused a crash in Florida that killed three people.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Wednesday that California’s action to revoke these licenses is an admission that the state acted improperly even though it previously defended its licensing standards. California launched its review of commercial driver’s licenses it issued after Duffy raised concerns.

“After weeks of claiming they did nothing wrong, Gavin Newsom and California have been caught red-handed. Now that we’ve exposed their lies, 17,000 illegally issued trucking licenses are being revoked,” Duffy said, referring to the state’s governor. “This is just the tip of iceberg. My team will continue to force California to prove they have removed every illegal immigrant from behind the wheel of semitrucks and school buses.”

US to build large military base near Gaza border

The United States is advancing a plan to build a large military base in the Gaza envelope, the Shomrim news website reported, citing Israeli officials who were exposed to the plan.

According to the report, the base is intended to be used by the international forces who will operate in the Gaza Strip to enforce the ceasefire and is expected to house thousands of servicemembers.

The cost of construction is estimated at half a billion dollars, and the Americans have begun examining possible locations in the area for the base. The initiative is being advanced in cooperation with the Government of Israel and the IDF.

At the moment, the US military presence in Israel is relatively limited, consisting of 200 soldiers operating out of the US Central Command Civil Military Coordination Center (CMCC) in Kiryat Gat.

However, according to reports, the CMCC is expected to take full control of the humanitarian aid distribution system in Gaza, a process that was previously carried out under Israeli supervision.

The Israeli Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories' (COGAT) role is expected to be significantly limited.

>From March 2022 to May 2023, the man known as "KlammereFyr" on Reddit posted sexually explicit scenes featuring over 100 actresses.
>Experts say the man was prosecuted under a rarely-used clause in Danish copyright law, with the judge finding that by taking the scenes out of their original context, the man had damaged the artists' "moral rights".
>In 2023, campaigners reported the case to the police on behalf of the affected actors, directors and producers, which led to the subreddit being closed down.
>One of the actresses whose explicit scenes were shared in the group, told the Danish broadcaster DR at the time she felt there was a difference between appearing naked in a film and appearing on Reddit.

Democrats rage as funding bill heads to House

Democrats from both chambers of Congress and differing wings of the party are furious after eight Senate Democrats voted with Republicans to advance a measure to reopen the government.

The Senate passed the spending bill Monday night, and House leaders said they would vote on it as early as 4 p.m. on Wednesday. President Trump said he would “abide by the deal” once it reaches his desk.

House Democrats are widely expected to oppose the bill, while a few moderate members may buck the party and vote for it. Republicans will be operating with an ultranarrow majority to get it to Trump for a signature.

The agreement has also reignited a debate among Democrats over the party’s direction and the right leaders to chart the path forward, with several progressive House members and those running next year calling for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to be replaced.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) released a statement declaring his opposition to the agreement before it passed a procedural vote on Sunday. The House will return from an extended two-month recess to vote on the measure.

“We will not support spending legislation advanced by Senate Republicans that fails to extend Affordable Care Act tax credits,” Jeffries said. “We will fight the GOP bill in the House of Representatives, where Mike Johnson will be compelled to end the seven week Republican taxpayer-funded vacation.”

The Hill’s Mike Lillis and Sudiksha Kochi report tensions are boiling over within the Democratic Party, just a week after the party was riding high off its sweeping success in last Tuesday’s elections.
