Speaker Johnson Snaps Fingers, Donald Trump Sits

Johnson told White House that Republicans aren't interested in extending ACA subsidies, sources say

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/house-republicans-health-care-aca-subsidies-trump-johnson/

Speaker Mike Johnson has told the White House that most House Republicans have little interest in extending the Affordable Care Act's enhanced subsidies, sources familiar with the conversation told CBS News.

Johnson delivered the message in a phone call with senior administration officials as President Trump's advisers were drafting a plan to continue the subsidies for an additional two years. That plan that was initially expected to emerge this week.

The Wall Street Journal first reported Johnson's warning to the White House regarding the lack of GOP House support for the plan. Any White House health care plan would require overwhelming Republican support in the House to be enacted.

The enhanced subsidies expire at the end of this year, affecting tens of millions who benefit from them. The subsidies were at the heart of the government shutdown funding fight.

Democrats made an extension of the tax credits their central demand to reopen the government, demanding that Republicans negotiate on the issue to secure their votes. But GOP leaders insisted they wouldn't negotiate until after the shutdown ended. And ultimately, a group of eight Democrats supported a deal to end the shutdown, securing a commitment to vote on the tax credits within a month.

Japan ‘crossed a red line’ with Taiwan intervention remarks, Chinese foreign minister says

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Japan “crossed a red line” with comments by its new leader suggesting a potential military intervention over Taiwan, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Sunday.

Remarks earlier this month by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi that a Chinese naval blockade or other action against Taiwan could be grounds for a Japanese military response were “shocking,” Wang said in a statement posted on the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s website.

“It is shocking that Japan’s current leaders have publicly sent the wrong signal of attempting military intervention in the Taiwan issue, said things they shouldn’t have said, and crossed a red line that should not have been touched,” Wang said.

The most senior Chinese official to address the tensions so far, Wang added that China must “resolutely respond” to Japan’s actions and that all countries have the responsibility to “prevent the resurgence of Japanese militarism.”

EU buckbroken Amazon

https://www.scmp.com/news/world/europe/article/3333995/amazon-investigated-italy-over-chinese-goods-smuggling
Italian police raided two Amazon sites on Monday as part of a growing investigation into alleged customs and tax fraud involving Chinese imports, three sources with direct knowledge of the case said.

Prosecutors suspect the e-commerce giant acted like a “Trojan horse”, bringing Chinese goods into Italy without paying sales taxes or customs duties, according to a court document seen by Reuters.

The scheme could have cost the state hundreds of millions of euros and may extend across the European Union, sources said.

Dozens of officers from the Guardia di Finanza and the customs agency seized around 5,000 products at a logistics hub operated by the e-commerce giant in Cividate al Piano, in the northern province of Bergamo, the sources said.

At Amazon’s Italian headquarters in central Milan, police seized IT equipment and identified the manager responsible for the movement of goods within Italy.

Amazon declined to comment on the raids but said it was “committed to complying with all applicable tax laws and we cooperate fully with all relevant authorities”.

Democrats are about to fold

No.1453767 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
Democrats have announced their intent to fold like lawn chairs, finally ending the Democrat Shutdown and to take Republicans up on their offer to negotiate healthcare without holding the government hostage

Thune has repeatedly promised to negotiate with Democrats on extending ACA subsidies once the government is open and has even offered them a vote on their own proposal to extend those tax credits beyond December

The GOP leader, however, has stuck to his position that he won’t negotiate specific health care policy concessions with Democrats while the government remains closed.

Senate GOP, Democrats looking for ‘off-ramp’ to end shutdown next week

Senate Republicans and Democrats are trying to hammer out a proposal to end the 30-day government shutdown as soon as next week, as some centrist Democrats argue behind the scenes that their party has successfully highlighted rising health care costs and it’s time to end the stalemate.

Shutdown fatigue on Capitol Hill is growing as the government stoppage approaches the one-month mark, and the pain is increasing.

With open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) marketplace set to begin next month, Democrats say the higher costs are already baked in because Republicans have steadfastly refused to extend enhanced subsidies that are due to expire at the end of December.

“My assessment is that we’ve won anything that we can possibly win and the costs of continuing the shutdown are going to be felt by people who are going to food banks and federal employees,” said one Democratic senator, who argued that any political benefit of extending the shutdown is about to be outweighed by the harms inflicted on ordinary Americans.

A huge factor in this thinking is that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits are due to expire Saturday, putting 42 million Americans at risk of not having enough to eat.

Multiple studies confirm AI-powered search engines making people stupider

https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/learning-with-chatgpt-disturbing

ChatGPT and other AI chatbots are replacing the search engine. Instead of letting you suffer the laborious task of looking up sources of information, these powerful large language models will simply concoct an answer for you, with the minor risk that it might be totally made up.

It turns out there’s another hazard: while getting your answers this way may be quick, it isn’t great for actually learning, according to a new study published in the journal PNAS Nexus.

“When people rely on large language models to summarize information on a topic for them, they tend to develop shallower knowledge about it compared to learning through a standard Google search,” study co-lead author Shiri Melumad, a professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, wrote in an essay for The Conversation about her work.

The findings are based on an analysis of seven studies with more than 10,000 participants. The gist of their experiments went like this: the participants were told to learn about a topic, and were randomly assigned to either only use an AI chatbot like ChatGPT to do their research, or a standard search engine like Google. At the end, the participants were asked to write advice to a friend about what they learned.

At least 67 Palestinian children killed in Gaza since ‘ceasefire’ began: UN

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/11/21/at-least-67-palestinian-children-killed-in-gaza-since-ceasefire-began-un

UNICEF says baby girl among several children killed this week as Israel carried out a wave of bombings despite truce.

At least 67 Palestinian children have been killed in the Gaza Strip since a United States-brokered ceasefire agreement came into effect last month, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says.

Speaking during a news conference in Geneva on Friday, UNICEF spokesperson Ricardo Pires said the death toll includes a baby girl who was killed in an Israeli air strike on a home in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis on Thursday.

It also includes seven other children killed a day earlier, as Israel carried out a wave of attacks across the enclave.

“This is during an agreed ceasefire. The pattern is staggering,” Pires told reporters of the death toll since October 11, the first full day of the truce between Israel and Hamas.

X's new location feature exposes big US politics accounts

No.1459901 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cj38m11218xo
Dozens of high-engagement accounts on X have been accused of misleading users following the roll-out of a new transparency feature that shows user locations.

Users on the social network seized on examples of pro-Trump accounts that posted about US politics, but which turned out to be based outside the US. There were also anti-Trump accounts with misleading locations too.

Posts from some of the accounts have attracted millions of impressions - views, likes, reposts and replies - which can result in payment from X.

BBC Verify is not able to independently confirm the information X provides about each account.

The location data is visible in a new "about this account" tab which appears on every profile.

It also contains a warning that the location data may be affected by recent travel, temporary relocation and the use of virtual private networks (VPNs).

However, according to X's head of product, Nikita Bier, the information is 99% accurate.

On Saturday, Trump shared on Truth Social a screenshot of a post from an X account called "TRUMP_ARMY_" celebrating a Supreme Court ruling it says will allow the president to deport criminals to El Salvador.

This account has gathered more than half a million followers, including a senior Republican senator.

But X's data has revealed the account is based in India and the username changed four times since March 2022.

The account profile has now been changed to "an Indian who loves America, President Trump, Musk!"

Another, account called "IvankaNews_", which describes itself as a fan account for Trump's daughter, has gathered more than one million followers and has previously posted about voting for the president last year.

However, the account is based in Nigeria and its username has changed 11 times since 2010, according to X.

After its location was revealed, the account posted that "some of us living outside the USA genuinely support President Trump's movement".

Trump accuses Ukraine of ingratitude as officials meet in Geneva on US peace plan

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/us-ukraine-european-officials-hold-talks-geneva-trumps-plan-end-war-2025-11-23/

GENEVA, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Ukrainian, U.S. and European officials met in Geneva on Sunday to discuss a draft U.S. plan to end the war in Ukraine, after Kyiv and its allies voiced alarm over what they saw as major concessions to Russia and pressed for changes.

U.S. President Donald Trump, who has championed the 28-point plan, said on Sunday that Ukraine had not been grateful for American efforts over the war, prompting Ukrainian officials to stress their gratitude to the U.S. president for his support.

European officials joined the U.S. and Ukrainian delegations for talks late on Sunday after crafting a modified version of the U.S. plan for Ukraine that pushes back on proposed limits to Kyiv's armed forces and mooted territorial concessions.

The European plan proposes that Ukraine be granted a larger military than under the U.S. plan and that talks on land swaps should start from the front line rather than a pre-determined view of which areas should be considered Russian.

On Friday, Trump said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had until Thursday to approve the plan, which calls on Ukraine to cede territory, accept limits on its military and renounce ambitions to join NATO.

For many Ukrainians, including soldiers fighting on the front lines, such terms would amount to capitulation after nearly four years of fighting in Europe's deadliest conflict since World War Two. On Saturday, Trump said the current proposal for ending the war is not his final offer.
