No surprise here: Republican guilty for depraved child sex abuse

No.1444609 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
https://scdailygazette.com/2025/09/29/former-rep-rj-may-pleads-guilty-to-sending-disgusting-and-depraved-child-sex-abuse-videos/

COLUMBIA — Former Rep. RJ May told a federal judge Monday that he used an account under the name joebidennnn69 to send videos of children being sexually abused.

May, acting as his own attorney, signed a plea agreement last week, more than three months after his arrest on charges of sending child sexual abuse videos. Monday’s hearing formally changed his plea from not guilty to guilty, waiving his right to a jury trial.

The West Columbia Republican will remain in the Edgefield County jail until his sentencing hearing, which is scheduled for Jan. 14.

The 38-year-old’s plea agreement applied to five of the 10 videos with which he was charged. Prosecutors agreed to dismiss the remaining five counts. Each count could bring a sentence of five to 20 years, along with a fine of up to $250,000, plus more than $40,000 in other fees. Federal inmates can’t receive parole.

A portion of the fine will go to children depicted in the more than 220 videos identified on the Kik account May said he operated. Through other cases, investigators have identified 21 of the 62 children in the videos, said U.S. Attorney Bryan Stirling.

Many of the same videos appear in multiple cases as people trade them around, Stirling said.

“Every download revictimizes these children and fuels this evil industry,” he said.

U.S. District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie will determine how much will go to the identified victims, who live worldwide.

A federal probation officer will prepare a report recommending a sentence, but Currie will have the ultimate decision over how much prison time May serves and how much money he owes. Currie will consider the plea agreement, as well as the dismissed charges, when deciding the sentence, she said Monday.

Trump announces 100% tariffs on movies made outside the US

No.1443283 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
https://www.cnn.com/2025/09/29/economy/trump-movie-tariff

President Donald Trump said in a Truth Social post on Monday he will be imposing a 100% tariff "on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States."

Trump did not specify when or how the tariff could be enacted.

If Trump follows through with his threat, it would mark the first time he's essentially imposed a tariff on a service rather than a good.

The president initially threatened a 100% tariff on foreign-produced movies in May, arguing that other countries offer tax incentives that have drawn filmmakers abroad. In his post on Monday, he singled out California, saying the state "has been particularly hard hit!"

The state, meanwhile, has proposed and put in effect many tax incentives, as have other American cities.

Hollywood was completely caught off guard when Trump first previewed the tariff in May. "On first blush, it's shocking and would represent a virtually complete halt of production," one industry insider told CNN at the time. "But in reality, he has no jurisdiction to do this and it’s too complex to enforce."

American actors and directors generally prefer to work close to home. But "the fact is, it’s cheaper for Hollywood studios to pay for everyone to get on planes, pay for hotels, because the cost of labor, lack of rebates and the ability to make things overseas is infinitely cheaper," Jay Sures, vice chairman of United Talent Agency, told CNN in May.

Nearly half of FBI agents in major offices reassigned to immigration enforcement

No.1446511 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/oct/09/fbi-agents-reassigned-ice-immigration

Nearly half of the FBI agents working in the US’s major field offices have been reassigned to aid immigration enforcement, according to newly released data, a stunning shift in law enforcement priorities that has raised public safety concerns.

Personnel data obtained by Mark Warner, a Democratic senator, and shared with the Guardian, suggests the Trump administration has moved 45% of FBI agents in the country’s 25 largest field offices to support the Department of Homeland Security’s immigration crackdown. Across all of the FBI’s offices, 23% of the roughly 13,000 total agents at the bureau are now working on immigration, according to Warner, the top-ranking Democrat on the Senate intelligence committee.

Warner’s office said the FBI agents now deployed alongside Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) agent have been taken away from their work tackling cybercrimes, drug trafficking, terrorism, espionage, violent crimes, counterintelligence and other efforts that are part of the bureau’s mission – some areas that Trump has claimed are White House priorities.

The data, first reported by the Washington Post, suggests the FBI is dramatically shifting its objectives in an effort to back Trump’s increasingly aggressive immigration raids, with the administration targeting 3,000 daily arrests and seeking to expand its detention capacity to detain more than 100,000 immigrants.

The data is understating the scale of the reorganization, as the FBI only provided counts for agents who are now spending more than half of their job doing immigration enforcement, according to Warner. The senator’s office said it was likely that more than a quarter of FBI agents’ total hours were now dedicated to immigration, and that in some field offices, more than half of the agents had been redirected to DHS.

Speaker Johnson Pledges to Protect Epstien Clients for Third Week

No.1446619 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
Having failed to successfully threaten the lives and families of enough representatives to force them to withdraw support from a bill that would compel the DOJ to release all files related to Jeffrey Epstein's child sex trafficking ring, Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has elected to prevent the House of Representatives from reopening for another week.
Informed readers will note that there is nothing preventing Speaker Johnson from reconvening the House during the shutdown, and that as Speaker he would be capable of blocking any bills put forth by lawmakers attempting to negotiate and end the shutdown.
They will also note that keeping the House from reconvening allows Speaker Johnson to delay swearing in newly elected representative Adelita Grijalva, who has pledged to be the final signatory of a petition that would compel Speaker Johnson to bring Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie's Epstein transparency bill to a vote.

https://thehill.com/homenews/house/5549384-johnson-house-closed-government-shutdown/

>House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said Friday that he won’t call House lawmakers back to Washington until the government shutdown ends.

>“We will come back, and get back to legislative session, as soon as the Senate Democrats turn the lights back on,” Johnson told reporters in the Capitol, as the lapse in funding stretched into a 10th day. “That’s the fact. That’s where we are.”

>Johnson had canceled previously scheduled House votes on Sept. 29 and 30 — the last two days before the shutdown — and then again for the entirety of this week. The move was designed to maximize the pressure on Senate Democrats to support the GOP-led stopgap spending bill, which passed through the House last month.
