The world definitely isn't developed enough for that. Just look at what happened to Gengar- if someone even vaguely reputable/enough people believe something's true, the law will probably make sure they're treated like it is whether that's the truth or not.

There'd probably be different types of portals that function with different materials (ie there'd be a Warp Portal in a town or something for those who want to adventure) and maybe if you had some kind of setup you could make portals link up to each other...

I don't really love Wigglytuff or Bidoof either (the guild as a whole isn't nearly as endearing as Pokémon Square's cast to me), but at least the latter is very down-to-earth and the former has some intrigue behind him. Sunflora is just fucking annoying.
