Knowing just enough to navigate websites, read menus of Japanese games, and the labels on instant noodles and other foodstuff's enough for me.
If I encounter some unfamiliar word I'd go check the dictionary and read what it means, use them in a few sentences inside my head, and move on, hoping I'll remember it the next time I see it
Knowing how to break kanji down into radicals would help with that, especially if you can't be bothered to learn how to write them
Having a Japanese friend you can talk to might help speed up things though, didn't Kiara do the same thing?
