Blame Goh, Koharu and Alain for that.

At the end , Ash was never the problem since he always and always had game characters as his companion except for JN series. He stayed because he could attract audience just from the first episode. The problem was other new OC like Trip, Alain, Goh, Koharu that can't audience but the anime kept shoving them on people's throat.

The only people that hated him are self inverters because Ash wasn't some near invincible aura farming action hero that gets everything handed to him without any actual efforts such as Yugi and Jin-woo. This is why they also hates Subaru from Re:zero.
