Over the course of two decades Lego went on to become the largest (by market capitalization) toy company in the world. Also during this time they began to cater to adults as well as children, making them even more sales through the Ideas collection. Because of these things, Lego has a tremendous amount of money and sway in the toy industry. If they bid on a license deal, they win. The Megablock deal expiring basically just meant it was free game for Lego to move in.
