How many of you still use friction shifters?

I'm not a rich man, so I ride old used bikes, and I never have had an issue with these simple machines. I appreciate them for their simplicity and seldom do they need service or adjustment. Friction shifters get called outdated or bad or whatever all the time, if you feel that way, why?

I bet they will since they're newer, but if you're really worried you can find crib sheets of cable pulls for different groups and compare that one with one that is known to work. If you're curious though just go to a bike coop and drop a couple dollars in a cheapie, even ebay if you can't do that will be a lot cheaper. I was able to get 10s shimano out of a suntour thumbie by unscrewing the stack and flipping the stop plate around. Old barcons aren't that simple but you can still get more travel by filing the main boss and not hurt anything.

Microshifts should work with new cable pull. No ratchet in friction mode
Old timers have a 'micro ratchet'. they need an older derailleur, but those are cheap.

Which one? They're all about the same price.

Let's be fair, bb5s are perfectly capable for what they are, basic disc brakes that's above shit tier. I had bb5s on a hardtail and my only complaint about then is how often they need adjustment, when it comes to stopping in all kinds of conditions, they were more than adequate

buy what's wrong with full sus igh? I already switched from 28" derailer racing bike to 26" with fat wheels (suspension is broken though) 3s igh and haven't noticed much of a difference...
though the old bike was from 1994 so maybe it's heavier

All a lower gear does is allow you to ride slower.

This is true because power is power, there is a higher baseline torque requirement because riding uphill adds fighting gravity to the equation but the power required to apply that torque remains. That means 746w will always feel like 746w, even on the flats, regardless of the grade, wind, or any other resistance, how much of that power translates to actual speed or climbing rate will greatly differ but same wattage will always feel the same.

Got this used bike for my son, issue is the crank is very high and for him to ride without his knees bending too much I need to out the seat very high, but then it's uncomfortable especially when he stops because he can't reach his feet on the ground.

I'm pretty much convinced to get another bike for him since this one was cheap, but what kind of bike is this? Why is the geometry so weird?

It's for grinding and to allow more chainring clearance in general. This bike is not intendet to have 'appropiate' seat height. Reaching your feet to the ground while seated is unnecessary. But this bike is designed to do just that, just not for seated pedalling. Anways nice try.

You're not supposed to be able to easily reach the ground while seated. Every time you stop you're supposed to dismount, stand on one pedal, and swing out one leg as a kick stand.

That's stupid oversimplification. Average people will find that most 700c bikes of ordinary geometry behave like that. No touching the ground, at best with the tip of your toe, while seated at proper seat height.
On the other hand there is plenty of geometries that allow some riders to put both feet down, at proper seat height.
There is no 'supposing' of feet touching or not touching the ground. It is merely a function of bb height, setback and rider physiology and commonly observed that at correct seat height putting feet down like that is not possible.
