As for free will, that's a huge philosophical question that humanity has struggled with since developing consciousness, so it won't be resolved here. What I do believe is what I already wrote: most people are not very creative and lack initiative to do much of anything that isn't within the bounds of whatever heuristics they've learned to get through life. Their mental decision tree only expands when they see someone do something new in a easily understood and digestible manner. Using abstract thought to bring together several previously unrelated concepts is beyond them. Western society is full of guardrails and padded corners that make the default path easy to follow, even if it's not the path that would provide the best results.
That's most people but not all people. Innovators do exist and some use their innovation to destroy the world around them for various reasons.
