Do you want to drive up to a campsite or walk to it? If you haven’t done either I recommend car camping first. But if you want to backpack buy backpacking gear. That way you can test out your backpacking stuff. Then when you check off what you actually use all the time car camping, and keep it under 30 lbs you can graduate to backpacking.

Get the cheap zlite closed foam or equivalent at least for a sleeping pad. It’s a good investment and lasts forever comparatively. For discount gear try steap and cheap or gear trade for a cheap sleeping bag in the 20 degree range. Get one in that range because the # you see is for survivability not comfort usually. Now I’m older I use that and a blow up. One because it’s super comfy. 2 because my s2s etherlite is great but if I spring a leak and can’t gear tape it at least I have something. And 3 closed foam makes a good sit pad. Finally look up how to deal with black bears on YouTube. For the most part black bears are like dogs or raccoons, usually pretty use to humans and more opportunistic, so food away from camp. But they still can fuck your shit up if you meet one on a bad day.

Jet Boils are pre built for convience
MSR is bare bones and you gotta build the kit yourself.
I have a Jet boil and recomment them except bring a lighter because the ignator isnt that great. super light weight. and made for backpacking.

On that note, minor protip, these kind of lighters are great for the job. Sportsman's Warehouse has them in the checkout area but you can probably find similar ones at a smoke shop or something. Barely takes up more room than a regular Bic but makes it way easier to get the fire in close to the burner while keeping your hand at a safe distance.

I have this exact model of twig stove and have had almost no issues with it that weren't the fault of my own stupidity. The only thing I would watch out for would be the wind, but with proper planning and/or making a wind shield, you shouldn't have any problems with it. Pic related is a short day hike I did in upstate New York last weekend. Made some pretty good sausage and potato stew with some of the Fosters beer as a base. Highly recommend, and don't let people afraid of soot and finding a handful of twigs tell you otherwise.

In my opinion he did the right thing staying put. The weather was terrible and challenging even for people looking for him. He likely couldve gotten lost or injured himself by trying to move. He was at a good, open and obvious spot for search and rescue to find him. Only risk he took was banking on his wife reporting him missing, but thats low risk in this scenario.

I was looking into camping/hiking and touching grass again, I had an alice pack in the military a long time ago and that was alright, but is there high tec super light stuff out there now that carrys a lot? Id like a full frame pack that is as light as possible that could carry 50-70 lbs. What about actual waterproof? Or do you still need to wrap everything in garbage bags?

-Right material for your needs and wants
-Right fit for your body
If you find one that suits you, check online for reviews.
If you really want a suggestion, try woolpower for "performance" merino blends, patagonia for high quality fleece, decathlon for low quality (still worth the price) fleece.

Thank you, I think a waxed cotton poncho will be the way to go, as that might be possible to double up as a half shelter, and Ive generally had good experience with ponchos. Gonna consider if perhaps a waxed cotton backpack would be nice, or if leather or loden would be better.
