We can also tell that he was in Vietnam thanks to the last two ribbons on his uniform, the green one was from Vietnam itself while the yellow one with red stripes was a US decoration. The three campaign stars on it correspond with his time in country. I cheated and googled when he was supposed to be there canonically (7 Jun 67) and that is portrayed on his uniform:

The red and yellow ribbon is the national defense service medal, everyone got that, the red one with white stripes is the army good conduct, which during war he could have earned for one year good conduct, and the first ribbon is his purple heart for being wounded in action. The all red ribbon in the gold frame is a Meritorious Unit Commendation, which we don't know but could determine from the distinctive unit insignia on his lapels in his dress uniform if they were clearer. The hanging medal on his pocket is for expert rifle, and the blue badge for being a combat infantryman. We don't see his crossed rifle insignia for the infantry but can deduce it by the little blue disk around the US collar pin or the aiguillette on the dress uniform.
