Thirty million years ago, in a distant galaxy, two black holes collided. Each black hole is itself a significant disturbance in the fabric of space and time. When they collide, it creates an even greater ripple that gets sent out at the speed of light.

In the world of technology, a person is born called Albert Einstein, who predicts the fact that such a thing as ripples through the fabric of space and time exist. Meanwhile, this ripple continues to move. Einstein predicts we should be able to detect one of these, but we just don’t have the technology yet. That would take another 80 or 90 years just to create the apparatus that could detect it.

We build the apparatus. This is called the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, LIGO. Within days of turning on the switch, that wave washes across the Earth. We detected something that was cast into motion before we were human.

Einstein not only predicted the existence of gravitational waves, he came up with the general theory of relativity. He also laid the foundation for the invention of the laser, and it is lasers that were used to detect the gravitational waves.

That’s badass.

Cirno's Origins

ID:f6dXEKub No.23965679 View ViewReplyLast 50OriginalReport
So I thought I'd just make a thread for all the things I know about Cirno's origin and interesting coincidences.

- In 1958, Sergio Cirno Bissi painted "Female portrait in 18th-century costume". The girl in the portrait had light blue hair: https://www.catawiki.com/en/l/100799957
- In 1978, YMO released the song "Yellow Magic". The song in the following video sounds very similar to Cirno's theme at 29 seconds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3DSwl3gMTc&t=39s
- In 1982, Kunihiko Mitamura released the song "Omoide No Itoguruma". The part that sounds like Cirno's song starts at 23 seconds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Re0K9dqGt9Y&t=23s
- In 1989, Orup released the song "Min mor sa till mej". In it, it talks about a "blue-eyed idiot". The song also contains a portion that sounds like Cirno's theme at 2:27: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfH5usYFxSo&t=2m27s
- In a 1996 Gamest interview, artwork was shown of Marisu and Teresu. The pattern of Marisu's dress might have inspired Cirno's dress.
- In 1998, ZUN introduced a blue-haired girl named Mai, a character in Touhou: Mystic Square for the PC-98. She is found in the frozen fields within Makai. Her theme song and icy theme could be a reference to the ninth circle of Hell in the Divine Comedy (circle 9).
- Volume 4 of Sarai was released in 2001 and introduced the character "チルノ" (name only). Volume 6 came out shortly later in 2001 and showed the Cirno character for the first time. Cirno's original name was supposed to be "チルド" (Chirudo), but for whatever reason ZUN changed the ド to a ノ. Cirno's personality and association with being a "baka" was likely inspired by the Cirno character in Sarai.

If I'm missing anything, feel free to comment!

INSTITUTIONAL BULLSHIT DETECTOR (MATH, SIMPLE)

Goal: detect when a system “responds” but won’t touch the mechanism.
1. The dodge (why replies go sideways)

Let your claim be x. It has features:

m = mechanism you’re pointing at (the hook)
i = identity salience (protected-category trigger)
c = civility score (forbidden words / tone)
e = effort to answer honestly

The system picks a reply y to maximize:

U(y|x) = Help − Risk − Effort

More explicitly:

U = δ·Help(m) − α·PolicyRisk(i,c) − β·ReputationRisk − γ·Effort(e)
with α,β,γ ≫ δ

Translation: it optimizes “don’t get blamed” more than “address m”.

So when PolicyRisk is high (i high or c low), it chooses cheap moves:

S: talk about PERSON/TONE instead of m
A: shift attention from mechanism to emotion (“u mad?”)
D: demand proof with no update (you pay the cost, they don’t move)

If you keep seeing S + A + D, that’s the pattern.
2. The bad-faith test (works for housing, crime, drugs, schools, etc.)

Define:

M = harm metric they claim to want DOWN (rent, overdoses, crime…)
A = direct fix that would reduce it (measurable): ∂M/∂A < 0
P = their preferred program that grows when harm grows: P = g(M), with g′(M) > 0

Test:

If they BLOCK A (the thing that makes M go down)
while pushing P (the thing that expands as M stays high),
then their revealed preference is not M. It’s P.

No mind-reading. No “conspiracy”. Just:
what lowers M?
what do they block?
what do they expand?

That’s the proof.

Hello there! My name is Cirno! Cirno the Ice Fairy! I'm the strongest! Say, have you seen Pepe the Frog anywhere? He stole the tendies and Dewey and ran off scraming about "jews" and "BlackRock" or something. Have you seen him? He's fat, green, retarded, oh! and he also hates the word j*b. I tried saying he sould get one and he called be a "Normie goyim NPC faggot" and told me to kill myself. Anyways, I'm off to freeze more froggies! Hai! Hai!
